PDF Editor FAQ

Could I become a good data scientist with a weak math background?

I'm not terrible sure why Quora is saying this needs an answer with 4 answers already in place, but I will go ahead and throw in my 5 cents. On the not being good in the math part, you can find my reply here: What should I do if I want to become a data analyst and focus on coding rather than model building, but I'm not good at math? Now lets look at the "I am a nurse freshman" part.First: Congratulations, you are actually thinking harder on what you want on the long run early on your life. This on itself is a big deal considering what I hear everyday from MS students not sure what they want to do or why they are even pursuing the degree on the first place! My second point is 'why not do both?' The problem with the data science term is that it takes into account so many fields that its hard to really understand what really picked your interest. Was it crunching numbers, getting insights out of it and presenting good visualizations? Well, the good news is that you can do that in a nurse majors! One interesting class I took on my MS here for the sake of breadth was Bioinformatics. Let me warn you in advance: I am a MS in Computer Science, and also a BSc in Computer Science. Nonetheless, the professor teaching Bioinformatics was in the ICS department so I thought 'why not?'. Now funny fact: It was me, other 2 ICS students and the rest of the class were all nurses!I was required to do a project after learning some of the domain, and well, being someone who does data analysis for a living here as a research assistant, I wanted to bridge both worlds. I found myself doing a project in public health. My title? "How toilets make people taller" (catchy isn't it? you can likely find the professor who advised me on it just searching for that!). I wasn't using your usual facebook social network graph API, or my MS thesis weather sensor network. Rather, I was using something much simpler: Surveys. Did you know there are websites out there filled up with a lot of survey data to better understand policy making to help poor countries? Say for example, where should we invest at sanitation (if at all) at poor countries to decrease disease spreading and mortality? Have a look at The DHS Program - Quality information to plan, monitor and improve population, health, and nutrition programs . The data is a request form away from you. If you don't believe me, here is my class project analysis report done with R and KnitR to pretty print a report I made the template myself:Analysis of Effect Between Sanitation and Malnutrition in Ethiopia (2011) Report [Ink CSS Version]So at the end of the day I was there programming in R some cleaning routines to read the surveys data, testing hypothesis and so forth. IMO Data pre-processing on this kind of data is way worse than the usual "data science datasets", since the dictionary to understand the data is a nightmare of codes all over the place through several PDF files, not to mention a minimal domain expertise is needed which is often not something you would come across on your average daily ICS majors at all.Arguably you can say "Hold on! People there use plain statistics!". But hey, I used all the toolset I use for data analysis, and if anything R language has been there since data science wasn't a thing. So the bottom line is: Think harder what you really want to do with data science or what is it on it that picked your interest. Look at your majors, look at your classes. Is there anything quantitative associated to anything you are studying? Likely there is. Maybe you will find what you are looking for. I also recommend you visit Coursera (specially John Hopkins Specializations).Hope it helps!
