They lived off random jobs carrying cases or sweeping floors for food and booze.2. Laws against parasitismReal Socialism sticks to the principle “He who doesn’t work, neither shall he eat”. In Soviet Union, this meant having a paper confirming that you were employed somewhere. Our Nobel prize taker, poetJoseph Brodsky was sentenced to five years hard labor and served 18 months on a farm in the northern provinces because he failed to produce such a paper.Rare were the bums that had such a place of permanent employment. Since they didn’t want to bring upon themselves years of hard labor in the provinces, they tried to make themselves as inconspicuous as possible. Railway stations were the rare places where you could spot a bum gathering. There, they had an excuse of being “just passing” on the way back into the provinces.
