Yes and let me explain why. I got my giant, 100lb German Shepherd, Kya, from a high kill shelter where she was on the euthanasia list for being too aggressive. We worked with some rescues at that time helping to save dogs like Kya. One of our rescue friends called to see if we would help with Kya. For a little back story on me: I’ve grown up around animals all my life, dogs, cats, horses, cows, birds, guinea pigs, you name it. I have an almost unhealthy trust in animals, lol. I’ve never been afraid of any bark, growl, or snarl. All I see is a frightened or stressed dog looking for some reassurance. So, I drive three hours down to the shelter to evaluate Kya, who is being housed in the bite wing. They show me back there and leave me to “get to know” her.There stands this huge German Shepherd that is barking viciously and charging the cage door like all she wants to do is rip out my throat. I try talking to her, try letting her know that I’m not a threat, nothing is calming her down. I leave the bite wing to call my mom and say, “I don’t know about this dog, she’s acting like she wants to kill me and it’s a long drive home with her.” My mom talks to the rescue and they say that they don’t want me in danger, but Kya will be euthanized at 5am the next morning. Despite my reservations, I signed the papers and adopted her. She still needed to be spayed, so my thought was if she’s gonna kill anybody it’ll be the shelter staff and I’ll have my answer, lol. So, I come back the next day to pick her up and here’s this happy (albeit still drugged up & high) dog. She walks out of the building on a leash perfectly fine and jumps right into my truck.I’m thinking, ‘ok, maybe this will work’ and then I try to get in my truck. She sitting very close to the drivers seat and every time I try to move her over she looks at me like “don’t touch.” She finally moves to the passenger side and we’re on our way. For the first 30 minutes she sits in the passenger seat just watching the road, then she finally lays down on the bench seat facing me. We ride for a while, but every time I try to pet her, she sits up and moves away from me. After another hour, I place my hand by her nose, without touching her, just so she can get used to my scent. She wakes up, sees my hand there, sniffs me a little, & then gives me one lick. That was it, I was done for, she was my dog. I got her home and got her situated and seven years later, she is still my big baby girl. Turns out she’s pretty awesome too, she knows commands in German and English, super intelligent, incredibly sweet and very protective. She has never shown an ounce of aggression towards me since that first day. I can’t imagine a dog this great being euthanized without anyone knowing how wonderful she truly is! Please, always check your local shelters when looking for a new BFF, they have loads of amazing dogs and cats who are looking for someone to love & you never know just how awesome they may be.This is the scared dog I first met.This is what we call a “break out” photo, when a dog leaves the shelter.These last 3 are of her happy self today.Don’t shop, adopt!!**Edit 05/03/20Thank you all SO much! It’s with a very broken heart that I say my sweet baby girl passed away in July and is now waiting for me at Rainbow Bridge. It’s been an excruciatingly difficult 3 months being without her and it was very difficult to be on here and read all of your beautiful comments. But, I am trying to respond now. Thank you all for your sweet, kind words, it means the world to me.
