PDF Editor FAQ

Now that NASA has received over 10 million volunteers to make the one-way trip to Mars, how will it decide who to send?

I think you didn’t fully read whatever blog post you got that little nugget from. 10 million people signed up to have their *names* sent to Mars - etched onto a chip by an electron beam, onboard the Mars 2020 Rover.NASA hasn’t asked for volunteers to actually *go* to Mars. Should NASA ever receive funding to mount a crewed mission to Mars, that mission will be conducted by professional astronauts, not volunteers who filled in a web form.

What was the most unique reenlistment ceremony you witnessed while in the military?

I have a cool one.Our Captain made friends during a fort Lauderdale visit with some lawyers… These lawyers in turn introduced him to Wayne Heizenga Jr. The Navy League in Fort Lauderdale was very strong and trying to set up a dependent cruise so our CO Volunteered and off we went. Wayne and the lawyers flew up to Charleston and sailed down with us to Fort Lauderdale so for a few days they were guests of the ship and really got to know the crew. We did a full day excursion too with about VIPs onboard as a sort of dependents cruise hosting the Ft. Lauderdale Navy League. We pulled back in and had a few more days of liberty. Wayne found out the Navy only authorized us to have (1) 20 pax van for liberty runs to the strip so he rented us another. He hosted a party for all hands at the lawyers house and sent his fishing boat to pull in behind the sub every day to take who ever was off duty deep sea fishing if they wanted to go.He also put up 3 sign ups forms - one for the Marlins, one for the Dolphins and one for the Panthers. Anyone who signed up got to go the a game and got to meet some players… I remember it was when Dan Marino was QB… It was awesome..Now to the re-enlistment- I think a chief was due to re enlist but was joking that the wouldn't so he told the captain I’ll only re enlist at the game on home plate during the seventh inning stretch… Wayne made it happen and in front of thousands I watched this chief, the COB and the CO walk out to home plate and re enlist. The crowd was cheering ( Florida is always a very pro military state)…. then the game continued. That week was the best liberty port I ever saw a crew have.

Why did Roland Baretzko fight for Croats in Bosnian War instead of Bosniaks and what did he think of Bosnian army?

When I volunteered for the Croatian side, the war against the Bosniaks hadn’t started yet. Croats and Bosniaks were fighting against the Serbs. However, after I had reached my unit in the city of Mostar, the Croat-Bosniak war broke out. There was nothing I could do about it. It wouldn’t have helped to say: “Hey, I signed up to fight the Serbs, but now that we are fighting the Bosniaks, I disagree and I’m out!”To be honest, I didn’t care at all. All Western foreigners were fighting for the Croats while the Arabs were volunteering for the Bosniak side and the Russians, Greeks, and Romanians were with the Serbs. To my knowledge, there were no Germans fighting for the Armija (the Bosniak army). Later on, when Croats and Bosniaks formed a confederation, I met many Bosniak fighters and we always went along very well with them. They were our Allies, after all.The Bosniaks had quite a good army. During the war, we always used to say that the Croats had the best organization, the Serbs the best material and the Bosniaks the best fighters.
