I have taught at the same school for 34 years. It is my plan to eventually retire from that school. My school district dictates certain professional development topics. Other professional development I seek out because teachers need to continually hone and refine their skills. Technology has changed a great deal over the 34 years of my career. The method of delivering content has changed during that time, especially this year. Most of my colleagues view me as a steady anchor for the school, especially during challenging times like we have now. As long as I am willing to grow and perfect my craft, staying forever in one school is not a detriment to my school or students.

There are usually two paths for ESL/EFL teachers - one is pursuing formal qualifications (courses/programmes) and the second is learning on the job - reading, experimenting, reflecting on your teaching (action research), etc.I am not sure which one you are asking about, so I will start with the formal path, because it is easier to outline:Here are some of the examples of the formal PD in ELT:CELTA/TEFL certificate- most recognised entry-level certifications (but only if they include 120 hours of input with in-class teaching practice component, so not the 100% online courses)Delta - a very practical and highly valued Diploma in English Teaching (one of the requirements when applying for the course is 2 years of post-CELTA teaching experience). Myself, and many of my colleagues agree that a teacher with Delta is more likely to be recruited than a teacher with an MA, for example. So I agree with Bryan S - it is worth its weight in gold. Trinity Diploma is often viewed as an equivalent, although I think Delta is more practical, still (personal preference!)Specialised courses (e.g. BET course in teaching Business English or TYLEC - course in teaching Young Learners, etc.) that can be taken at any point in the teaching careerMA (TESOL usually, or some of the related fields such as Applied Linguistics for example).Organisations that provide a variety of courses are International House and the British Council. Another good website to look for a variety of PD options is Macmillan’s website: Teachers.And then there are MOOCs. I see either as a starting point (you can find out about lots of things there in general) or if you are interested in specific topics (in this case it’s good to look at the programme carefully in advance and choose which presentations/speakers address certain issues you are interested in). Sometimes they can be a little overwhelming - too many things are happening at the same time there!

CPD is nothing but getting familiar with the continuously changing syllabus and to upgrade himself/herself accordingly.A good teacher can convert a boring class or a boring subject into an interesting one by introducing tits and bits of information related to the subject but not available in the book. Students love the latest information about any subject and a well-informed teacher can make them hungry for more.Sometimes in a class, advanced student/s may ask some related but little known information to the teacher. If the teacher is not well equipped for that, s/he will face embarrassments in front of other students. It damages the reputation of the teacher and s/he loses control over the class.During this COVID situation, the teaching profession is getting more and more harder as they are facing a technological challenge as well as they have to prepare more worksheets to feed the students. They have to make research works that are interlinked with the learning.As time goes on the teaching profession will get more and more corporatized (thanks to the new education policy) and to survive in the corporate world one has to develop his/her skills continuously.
