PDF Editor FAQ

What is the difference between "Sealing" and "Searing" a piece of meat?

To me, sealing meat means to enclose it in a plastic wrapping, then sucking out all the air. This is commonly called vacuum sealing.Searing means to create a crusty outer texture by the application of high heat, usually in a pan. Some people think sealing and searing are the same thing, as the browning process ‘seals’ in the juices. It’s actually not true. Moisture will escape from the meat during the cooking process no matter what you do.[1][1][1][1]Dry heat plus water equals evaporation. This is not quite the right graph, but it demonstrates that no amount of resting will result in a zero percent weight loss. The loss in weight, in all cases, represents liquid that was lost during the cooking process.Footnotes[1] Pan-Seared Steaks with Red Wine Pan Sauce Recipe[1] Pan-Seared Steaks with Red Wine Pan Sauce Recipe[1] Pan-Seared Steaks with Red Wine Pan Sauce Recipe[1] Pan-Seared Steaks with Red Wine Pan Sauce Recipe

Do foreigners in China hate or get offended by the word "Laowai(老外)"?

The word is not offensive, but the way it is commonly used often makes me feel frustrated. I'm a foreign English teacher in a small business college, and everyday students whisper 老外 when they see me pass. They mean that I am a foreigner, and with the word comes many beliefs about me.There are no ill feelings in that, in fact they are very friendly to me, but the word is connected to a number of stereotypes that I cannot escape because I am clearly a 老外.These steryotypes include that I am of Christian heritage, I like steaks, hamburgers and coffee, I am lewd, loud and outgoing, and that I will complain about things that are out of my depth in China. All these assumptions seem probable and rationale because they describe most of the other foriegners I have met in China, but like any stereotypes, it can be so frustrating trying to seperate your own identity from what people assume about you based on other experinces.I am a Jew, I love tea but not coffee, I come from a place where we eat salads and salmon, not steaks and burgers. I am intorverted, quiet, emotionally repressed sometimes, and find myself agreeing with most of my students about many of their political and social opinions.I want to tell people I wouldn’t be here if there weren't so many things in China that I prefer to my home, so I am not here to complain or critisize, or to purchase the products associated with westerners. I don't like being treated to Starbucks or McDonald's. I am asked by students or colleagues to defend or explain views about American or British identity that are only applicable to another subset of those cultures, such as blue collar workers, nationalists, or sports fans.I am getting tired of telling people I am not the way they imagined, or correcting assumption people made about what I want, what I know, and what I am capable of because of my appearance. So if you are from mainland China and reading this;拜托下次认识一个老外,记得我们都是自己的人物,叫我们老外没问题,但是不要让老外当我们的名字。

In Dungeons and Dragons how could non magical armies defeat magical armies?

Love this question! It actually features pretty heavily into the fantasy book series I wrote which was inspired by various AD&D campaigns back in my youth.I’ll answer it a couple of different ways. For the first part of my answer, Ima take some liberties with the question as written and tweak it to “how could armies that are vastly outclassed in magic beat magical armies. The reason I’m doing that is because even in very low-magic campaigns, there’s usually still at least SOME magic (I’ve literally never seen, heard of or been in a campaign where there wasn’t at least a little magic), so I’ll start with that and then in part two, answer the question from the perspective of a totally non-magical army.So let’s say you’ve got…cantrips and a smattering of first level spells, and your enemies have the full boat. All the way up to level nine.Okay, first thing, you’re outmatched. Big time. If those heavy hitters start tossing out level nine spells, you’re toast. The good news is, there are only gonna be a handful (like 1–2) enemy spell casters that can actually do that, with the rest of them hitting you with significantly lower level spells.Even so, it sucks to be on the receiving end of a fireball and your enemies have that and you don’t. So - time to get clever. You gotta kill those hard hitting casters. As has already been mentioned, that means infiltration and assassination. Rogues are gonna be your best friend because they’re going to be able to slip past enemy lines, get in there and shed some blood for you.On the good news front, you have access to cantrips at least, which means you have an amazing range of AWESOME deception tricks (dancing lights, mage hand, prestidigitation, minor illusion, etc.) and you’re gonna use those to maximum effect to mask your army’s approach and make the bad guys think you’re somewhere you’re not while you spring up from an unexpected place and do some damage, then slip away before they can respond. You’re also going to spread your forces out. Massed troops are easy targets for fireballs, so you’re not going to mass. You’re going to fight skirmisher style. Loose formation and making the most of irregular terrain. You’re also going to take advantage of the power of fighters. A high level fighter can easily be mixed into a company of “regular” troops and be made to look entirely indistinguishable from the pack. Until he gets up close and personal, which is when he’ll reveal himself to be a badass, capable of taking a fireball on the chin and then gutting the squishy mage who cast it. Remember, most of the big, hurty spells require the wizards to get pretty close to the front lines to cast them. That’s well within dash range of a charging barbarian or champion, which means that unless they have an escape hatch already carefully prepared, they’re dead.Ranged weapons have better range than most of the big hurty spells. A widely spaced company of archers can reach out and touch (and kill) a wizard long before most of his spells can reach out and touch them. Especially if you mix in some leveled-up crossbow masters and the like.Druids. Wildshape isn’t technically a spell, so may or may not be considered magic. Having a company of shapeshifting, HP regenerating brutes in your army will devastate just about anything.use the strobe light trick.. light on a copper coin. darkness on another copper coin. fuse them together, put them on a pendant, give it a flick and you’ve got an instant strobe light. Train your troops to fight in those disorienting conditions and watch the hilarity ensue. Many of the tricks above are also applicable to totally non-magical armies, but there’s more. A totally non-magical army is going to have to rely more heavily on rogues and warriors, but there are still opportunities. For example. Equip your armies with sacks of flour. Any time there’s a risk of invisible opponents, toss it out. Almost as good as a Faerie Fire. ;)Have your armies carry lighting rods with them to draw lighting strikes away from the troops.Go the science direction and start researching mechanical/advanced explosive devices. SteamPunk them to death. Research guns and gunpowder. You can make use of the skills of Artificers but just don’t give them any actual spells. They’ll whip up all sorts of goodies for you.Greek fire. Poison spray catapult grenades. Acid grenades. Clay pots filled with poison snakes. Create stampedes with herds of livestock to bolster your numbers. Use them as a diversion and attack from somewhere else. If the enemy fireballs them, have steak for dinner after the battle. Get mean. Get nasty.Stuff like that. :)
