PDF Editor FAQ

What are the best dog breeds for off-leash hiking? I would like a dog that won't run off on a scent trail or after other animals.

Usually, the best dog breeds for off-leash hiking are competitive hunting dogs or shepherding dogs such as German Shepherds, Jack Russell Terrier, Alaskan Malamute, Bernese Mountain Dog, Australian Shepherd, Rhodesian Ridgeback, American Kennel Club etc. One famously loyal Akita, named Hachiko, became known as the world's most loyal dog. Go to my Profile and you can find all dog material there...

When did German Shepherds suddenly mutate into "German Shepherd Dogs?"

“would be a mistranslation” according to whom? Would you prefer that they were called “German Sheep-Dogs”?The FCI (international kennel club), the AKC, and The Kennel Club (UK) all call them German Shepherd Dogs and have since they were recognized as a breed by those organizations. The breed name is German Shepherd Dog. Period. You can disagree with it, but you need to take it up with the people who made the decisions 100+ years ago. This is not a “Quora thing.” That ship has sailed. As others have pointed out, they are also far from the only breed with “GS” - “GS” can also mean Giant Schnauzer, Greater Swiss Mountain Dog, or German Shorthaired Pointer, among others. GSD is unambiguous in dog circles - as clear as saying that a dog was a “Lab.”If you want to get frustrated about breed names… you should really be picking on the Labrador Retrievers (actually from Newfoundland), the American Eskimo Dog (which should just be white German Spitz since it was not developed in America and has nothing to do with Eskimos), the Australian Shepherd (an American-by-way-of-the-Pyrenees breed), the Tibetan Terrier and Tibetan Spaniel (which are not a terrier and spaniel at all), or the Spanish Water Dog being classified in the AKC herding group…

Are Doberman Pinschers sighthounds?

Doberman Pinschers are not sight hounds. The Doberman is a fairly young breed, created in the late 1800s by Louis Dobermann of Apolda, Germany. He was a tax collector who wanted to breed a personal protection dog. He was also the dog catcher, so he had access to dogs of different breeds. It is believed that he used such dogs as the German Pinscher, Weimaraner, Beauceron, Manchester Terrier, and Rottweiler as his foundation stock. It is possible that there is some Greyhound ancestry as well. Dobermans are classed as part of the Working Group (AKC, Canadian Kennel Club, The Kennel Club (UK)), Guardian Dogs (United Kennel Club), and Group 2 Pinschers, Schnauzers—Mollosoid and Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs (FCI). Unlike sight hounds, Dobermans were not bred to hunt but to protect.Sight hounds are a group of dogs that hunt by sight rather than scent and with speed rather than endurance. They were bred to pursue swift, small prey such as rabbits. Sight hounds typically have a long, thin head, long legs, a deep chest, muscular tights, and a long, thin tail. They are usually lean. Sizes range from tiny (Italian Greyhound) to enormous (Irish Wolf hound). Short, long, and wiry coats occur. The sight hounds include some ancient breeds—the Saluki/Sloughi type may date back 5000 years. Sight hounds include the Greyhound, Whippet, Italian Greyhound, Afghan Hound, Saluki, Borzoi, Scottish Deerhound, Irish Wolfhound, and several other breeds. Some other dogs that either don’t hunt or don’t hunt exclusively by sight are sometimes classed as sight hounds; these include the Basenji, Rhodesian Ridgeback, and Ibizan Hound among others.
