Bill Murray, but in a good wayFirst off, he’s not just notoriously difficult to direct, he’s notoriously difficult to even CONTACT. Many stories have been written about his 1–800 phone number, upon which you must leave a message if you want to pitch him your film. Even if he accepts the part he is still often unreachable, and there have been directors and producers that have waited nervously for him on the first day of filming not totally sure if he will actually show up.Once he gets on set, don’t expect him to have learned his lines…or even have read the script! Multiple directors have described Murray’s method of acting as such: Someone hands him the script, which he promptly throws in the trash. He turns to the director and asks, “What’s the general idea here?” He then walks in front of the camera and makes everything up on the spot.His difficulty extends to after the film is completed, too. He’s known to be mercurial or moody every once in a while in interviews, and even though he had some memorable appearances on Letterman he often wasn’t promoting his latest project too hard. He’s also not shy about bad-mouthing projects that didn’t do especially well.So why does he still continue to get work?Being difficult isn’t always a bad thing. We tend to have the perception that “difficult” people aren’t worth the headache, but a casual glance at Murray’s filmography says otherwise. “Groundhog Day,” one of his best films, was also the source of a long-running dispute between Murray and director Harold Ramis that derailed their decades-long friendship. The Farrelly brothers have stated that large stretches of Murray’s work in “Kingpin” was not what they had written, but was so hilarious they included it anyway. Murray got so deep into character as Hunter S. Thompson for “Where the Buffalo Roam” that he started being drunk and abusive towards his SNL castmastes, but he was also on his way to becoming a comedy legend.And even though he trashed “Garfield” and claimed he took the job by accident, he still showed up for the sequel.UPDATE: Since this answer is getting a fair amount of play I figured I would post this video (which is already available in the comments section):

The kid was nine years old and, during the hype build-up, was doing up to 60 interviews a day. That’s tough on adults, never mind a little boy who was also shouldering the responsibility (and excitement) of playing one of the most recognisable and iconic movie villains ever.The hype build-up was ridiculous - to the point where no matter how good the movie was, it would never be good enough to meet expectations - and when the movie was (somewhat inevitably) deemed “disappointing”, the blame was laid on three people: George Lucas, Ahmed Best (who did the voice/mo-cap for Jar Jar Binks) and Jake Lloyd.When he returned to school, he was apparently endlessly bullied by his fellow pupils who would, among other things, shout out his “catch-phrases” from the movie and make lightsaber noises at him as he walked past. School is hard enough for a young kid without dealing with that as well.The world very quickly made it no secret how much they hated Episode I - especially practically anything to do with Anakin. Even now, you’ll see people claiming Jake Lloyd somehow singlehandedly “destroyed” Darth Vader, mocking his acting ability (never mind the fact that George Lucas is notoriously bad at giving direction and the chances of finding a genuinely good child actor are genuinely about 1 in a million), and basically tearing down everything about him. And keep in mind, these were primarily adults in their late 20s/early 30s - people who would have seen the Original Trilogy as children - being almost unbearably cruel to a prepubescent child. Being bullied by your peers is one thing, having to endure it from those much older than you is even worse.Because of the near-instantaneous backlash Episode I received, people were initially very reluctant to cast the stars in anything else. Ewan McGregor pulled through mainly because he’d already more than proven himself in other films by that point, like his work with Danny Boyle, not to mention the fact that Obi-Wan was generally seen as being one of the few good points of the film; Natalie Portman has spoken about how apparently no director wanted to work with her in the direct aftermath of Episode I coming out but thanks to being slightly older and having a bit more work under her belt, she was also able to pull through. Jake Lloyd didn’t have the luxury of either being old enough to cope or having enough good work to prove he was better than he seemed to be. Again, he was only a child with a child’s acting talent and (I think) only one other credit to his name, and with a lot of people blaming him for ruining Star Wars. Episode I was basically an anchor dragging his career down with it.
