Why is the quality of education in Indonesia so low?
As an education graduate, I am pretty excited to answer one of the most popular question like this, thanks anyways!Education seems never-ending task and process, with complexity and numerous challenges in every decade. As we know, there is nothing single effective solution for proper education system, in other words the improvements should be supported by other sectors such as infrastructure, technology, human resources, health and economics. This time I’d describe the prominent obstacles why Indonesia is still left behind in terms of education.Lack of qualified teachersIn 2006, research carried by World Bank showed around 54% of Indonesian teachers were underqualified. After nine years, the results of evaluation were not even better. Of more than 2 million certified teachers, only 192 achieved a score of 90 in pedagogical tests, and most scored below 56 in the year 2015. It is definitely controversial number since teachers are playing the most significant role in learning outcomes among students. Curriculum, media, methods, facilities, system and government seem unnecessary if the teachers cannot manage the students and master the subject pedagogically. In fact, the distribution of skillful teachers in Indonesia is not equal which pile up in urban area. Once I went to countryside in Jember as volunteer, I was shocked that only 4 teachers in elementary school, with combining between first and second grade.Classic.Who wants to be teachers in area without proper technology access, accomodation and entertainment? Also, teaching profession is considered not promosing and is often underestimated by others. Due to low salary and social status make excellent students not to choose to be teachers. If they chose, it would be the second or the last option. On the contrary, Singapore with its rapid advancement on education concerns about selecting, compensating, training, and developing teacher ans principals to ensure the delivery of high-quality education lead to high-quality student result. Prospective teachers are selected from the top one-third of each cohort by panels. Strong academic ability and non-academic qualities are essential considerations during the recruitment process, such that only candidates who possess the character, aptitude and abilities to teach and develop students are recruited as teachers.Nevertheless, Indonesia government has made some considerable efforts to improve education, placed a high priority on fostering the quality of teaching in order to improve student achievement. One of subsequent efforts is Sertifikasi Guru (teacher certification). It is a program for enhancing the quality of teachers professionally by examining the competency of teachers. Although it has been increasing the living standard of teachers because of twofold allowance policy, it unfortunately has no significant impact on Indonesian students outcomes. By this I mean, the program is not examining the whole skills needed and cannot assure the peformance over the time. Once the teachers pass the exam (written), they will obtain the allowance as long as they fill the obligation of 24 hours per week of teaching. I must admit this policy has wasted capital funding with 250 Trillion Rupiah since 2005, but I hope this program will benefit Indonesia not for short term but in the 10 or 20 years ahead.2. Strengthen conventional method or rote learningThis factor is obviously major hurdle for the pupils. The curriculum tends to memorize the facts, theories and information rather than solving the problems. The content is overwhelming, causing the stress, frustration and lack of understanding. Moreover, teachers mostly use the lecture and demonstration approaches while those methods are merely absorbed by students about less than 50%. According to some recent studies, an instructor generally says 100-200 words a minute and a student only hears 50-100—half. Worse yet, in a typical lecture class, students are attentive just 40 percent of the time. Imagine that we have grasped the information of subject just 40 % in each class as long 12 years?Generally, using lecture and demonstration are not constantly false, but those approaches clearly do not generate the creativity and critical thinking. In lecture or demonstration ways, students should pay attention to the teacher and whiteboard silently, while the true learning should concern on interaction, audio-visual and practice. Therefore, technical, professional and pedagogical skills are demanding in this 21st century as the students will face the global and technology challenges in the future.3. Lack of connectednessGoing to elementary-junior high school-senior high school-university is the most popular pattern among Indonesians, while not all of them are good at academic or theory-based learning. Therefore vocational education is viable solution to fill labor market, but sadly the quality remains low. In this case, senior secondary vocational school graduates (grades 10–12) lacked adequate skills to enter industry and business enterprises, and were adding to levels of unemployment throughout the country. The situation is even worse between secondary schools and colleges, as these are separate systems that don’t communicate with one another. This situation hasn’t changed for years : the educational system is disconnected and the players don’t collaborate.4. Measurement of student achievementMultiple conversations focused on Indonesia general obsession with standardized testing to measure achievement. While tests can play a role in measuring achievement and progress in areas such as math and language, many educationalists saw standardized test results as inadequate in results measurement. Consequently, students do not care with the understanding of the subjects as long as they can get satisfied grades for entering university through final raport.5. Low motivationI have a friend who followed an SM3T (Program Sarjana Mendidik di daerah Terluar, Terdepan dan Tertinggal) held by Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education of the Republic of Indonesia. It is a program for teaching students in rural of Indonesia for a year. He taught elementary students in Papua and said that Papua students are not motivated to study. Local government has provided them books, uniform, money, stationery, and etc, but they missed them out. During the class, they often played the music and danced!Education transformation does not necessarily require new ideas, programs, or interventions, but rather creating networks and collaborations to scale successful models.
What is it like to have dyscalculia?
It caused me unholy hell in school and in college. I am one who uses all sorts of memory processes, and counting, including with my fingers, with physical aspects of the numerals I am being mathematical with, with anything I can use at the time to help me deal with the math I have to do. There’s also visualization of units, charts, graphs, innumerable types of equations, mnemonic devices I concoct, whatever I can imagine to help me accomplish my mathematical task. I verbalize the numbers I am using, because I won’t always get them right if I don’t.People who are innately mathematical can spend all the time they want trying to teach me or help me learn things they find simple. If it makes no sense to me to even try to learn it, because I know my life will not have a practical application for it, I will resist. To my detriment.I had to take my high school algebra classes two times each to accomplish an acceptable grade. In college I tried to study basic College Algebra. First time I took the first class my mental math completely shut down. Not only could I not grasp the lessons, I experienced a temporary blank on all mathematical procedures. No, two plus two does not equal four. Two plus two equals GET THIS FUCKIN’ SHIT OUT OF MY FACE!!!!!In truth, addition and subtraction are not hard for me because they were learned with hands-on props and reinforced from toddlerhood throughout my entire childhood.I understand many mathematical procedures because of the effort I have put into memorizing and making sense of them so I would find them important enough for me to bother with. Even if they are only that important until I finish the class so I can get a decent grade. The multiplication table, in second grade, was horrendous! I had to see the times table in my head to find answers. It took me almost the whole school year to memorize that fuckin’ table! Then, we had summer break, and when school began for third grade I had pretty much forgotten it. Had to memorize again. For some reason, the nines really fucked with my head, causing me to hate nine. I’m over that now, but just imagine being tormented by the mere existence of a number!I am capable of reading analog clocks, but then, that was the only kind of clock I ever saw until I was in my twenties. Learning to tell time was frustrating because 1) my mother taught me and insisted it was not hard and I was just being difficult, and 2) those hands… there are two of them!Same problem with money. I was certain the clerk gave back too much change, because there were more bills than what was given her in payment. It took me an inordinate amount of time to understand the concept of different values, regardless of the fact that each denomination was clearly labelled. However, yeah, there is a problem there with time. I can not seem to get with a schedule. I care for a number of dogs, some rescue and rehabilitation, and horses, and this log house, which I designed and built and which is constantly in need of constructive work, and am landscaping, moving things from my old trailer to the house, I stay busy. But do it on a schedule? Ain’t happening. I can get near a time, but something about being on time is beyond my comprehension. Perhaps that’s more attributable to being Autistic. I don’t know. It’s just never made sense to me. Do something at precisely this time! Why? Why the fuck do I have to? It’s not like a few minutes will change anything! But, realistically, as a known given, I do understand that, sometimes, on time is crucial. It’s too damn stressful, so I keep it to a minimum and make my cell phone notify me several times. Throw in the time zone crossing I have to do for some of my health appointments. I have to check, double-check, reassure myself, check again, to make sure I have the time difference correct.Responsible for myself financially for over forty-four years, I have been on my own since seventeen. Beginning when I was a toddler, my mother taught me about a household budget using the actual figures of that week or month, whatever the pay period was for my dad. I “helped” her with that from before kindergarten, achieving full understanding of budgeting (simple add/subtract again) some time during ninth grade; right about when I was failing my first algebra class. (That shit is nasty juju!)Being competent with a charted budget concept, and execution of the required add/subtract math, made me feel like I was a total blithering idiot when I couldn’t understand why algebra was just beyond my reach. I did finally achieve an acceptable grade, but when I moved to another school district and found out I would be taking the same fricking class over, again, exact same text, for two more semesters, as I had just spent four semesters laboring over for a passing grade, I was livid!!! I went into full stop. Mental block. Meps!! Do not pass Go. Do not collect two hundred dollars! Incidentally, Monopoly is a stupid fucking game with the only reward being the accumulation of fake money, basically mathematical bullshit, who can count the highest, yippee!Rubic’s Cube. No Fucking Way!!! Even after having it written down step by step and practicing (rote memorization, I hoped), following each step faithfully, having it reliably solved every time (encouragement?), I could not repeat the steps without the cheat sheet. It is a math-based puzzle. I can’t fathom math-based puzzles. Hell, even Sudoku is a fucking joke to me.Still, every month, I draw a ledger of my household bills on which I list every item which must be paid. The amounts are the same every month for all but one (out of fourteen) debt item. Doesn’t matter that I know that the figures will all be the same, and my income will be the same, I have to have that chart to keep track of those numbers! One more thing, although there are several. I have always been oddly compelled to do things with my left hand, but am not considered a southpaw, because my folks and teachers made sure to swap the pencil to my right hand and tell me left was wrong. When I looked back to that, I figured I am a lefty who got forced into righty. I am relatively ambidexterous from practicing with both hands. As I understand it, dyscalculia could be the real cause for my handedness confusion in the first place.Knowing there is a genuine reason for all these weirdnesses has helped me in reducing my stress. I’m Autistic, high-functioning - genius, if you wondered. The genius part is a non-thing to me. Another label. But, knowing I am Autistic, and relating to how a lot of other Autistic folks experience life has been the most wonderful thing to happen. I’m slowly getting to a level of self-respect in the healthy range. That helps with the extreme anxiety sometimes, too.Nothing will ever help me relieve my social difficulties. They are just too complex.
