PDF Editor FAQ

You hear a lot in the press that companies can’t find enough workers to fill unskilled jobs - why don’t they just raise wages to fill their open positions?

Per the linked article, this claim is with respect to unskilled jobs in a landscaping business, specifically a residential lawn care company. Indeed, they may be able to raise the wage offered somewhat. But will it be sufficient to attract more workers? And how far can they raise wages? This depends on how much they can pass on the expense to their own customers. The same economic laws that tell us that the number of workers will tend to increase as wages are raised also tell us that the number of lawn care customers will tend to decrease as service rates increase.

Do police officers have monthly ticket quotas?

Yes - as late as 2012 in my department. In my department there was a quota for patrol units to write 30 tickets a month (motors and traffic units were higher of course). It was universally hated by officers. Our way of rebelling was to wait until the last shift of the month, and then go write a book full of warning parking tickets in the nicer areas of the city. This did two things. First, it didn’t collect any money for the city (whose administration was behind the quota in the first place). Second, it generated a metric shit-ton of phone complaints from people. As most cops will tell you, a residential parking ticket in a suburb will generate more hate and discontent than just about anything else. People will go to the fucking mat to fight a parking ticket for some reason. Some sergeants got on board as well, and would explain to the complainants that the city administration was forcing their officers to write the tickets, and then would give the city manager’s office line to forward any comments to.Anyway, we were able to generate enough complaints, with no corresponding revenue, that the city manager caved and the quota miraculously disappeared.

What is your craziest Indian immigration experience?

It happened with me last year at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport MumbaiI went to India to see my friends and relatives after 7 years. It was around 11 pm when I landed in Mumbai with a Pakistani Passport. When I reached the Immigration counter, I gave my passport and Visa Permit (Special document for Pakistani citizen) to an officer. The moment he looked on my passport, in brusque response asked me to first go at another counter (which was especially for Pakistani/Afghan Citizen)The officer at other counter started the conversation like this:Me: Hello Sir, I handed my passport and documents to the officerOfficer: After looking at passport and paperwork, he politely asked me Kaise ho (How are you)Me: I am fine sir, thanks for asking. How are you?Officer: where you are coming from and which cities you will be visiting?Me: I told him about my itinerary, although everything was mentioned in my visa paperwork.Officer: then he started asking about Hindus in Pakistan, how many Hindus are still living in Pakistan, do we celebrate Diwali and Holi, etc.Me: I told him everything he was interested to know.Officer: Please fill out these two formsMe: I filled out both lengthy forms and gave it back to him. He issued a Residential Permit visa document and asked me to go now at main immigration counter for entry stamp. By that time I was the only person in immigration lounge as all other passengers walk out easily without any hassle.I Proceed towards the main immigration counter, now comes a funny part. there was a naive officer, who didn’t know any procedure for immigration. When I handed him passport and RPV document. he was completely baffled, as usually other passengers just handed their passport and boarding pass. But as I was special ( A Pakistani Citizen :D), I handed him a passport, boarding pass and RP(Residential Permit) document. At first, he was surprised and told me he has never dealt with any Pakistani citizen before. He took all my paperwork and went to see his supervisor, left me waiting at the counter for 20 minutes. I was getting worried and unable to contact my friends who came to receive me at the airport. When he came back, he gave me another form to fill out. Once I filled that, he again went back to see his supervisor. Finally, he came back after 10 minutes. He said Welcome to India. I breathe a sigh of relief after spending 80–100 minutes at the airport.Edit 1:I want to highlight as Mr Ben Nair has raised that the Immigration officer has the right to question my intentions of coming to India. I agree that immigration officer has the right to question me, which I never objected at first place. I also would like to mention here though I am not racist. There was one Afghan national standing next to me in the queue. He didn’t have to fill any paperwork as I did, also he was not supposed to report at Police station after his arrival within 24 hours. But In my case, I have to report within 24 hours. Otherwise, I have to pay a penalty and also could face jail as told by the officer in the Foreigner Regional Registration Office (Mumbai). If security was a top priority, then I believe Afghan national should also be scrutinized (considering their global passport rank). I guess I don’t have to tell here why different treatment for Afghan and Pakistani national :D
