I'm pretty relieved I don't have to worry about College Board again (well, until after AP tests, but I'm graduating in a couple of months!) and I do empathize with current juniors who are facing a deluge of standardized testing these days. This is not completely comprehensive (I've linked at the bottom some more detailed guides), but just some tips I found most helpful.**PLEASE NOTE THESE TIPS ARE FOR THE "OLD" SAT.**First of all, take a real College Board-administered practice exam. Take it under exact exam conditions and then see what kind of range you're scoring in. It's very difficult to get a 2400, since the test is vulnerable to a variety of factors, but generally if you get 2300+, it's a given that any other day you could've nabbed that 2400. So I'll assume you're aiming for 2300+.For math sections:This section is VERY sensitive to errors -- typically, if you even get one problem wrong, the highest score you can get is a 770-780.The type of math questions that crop up are relatively predictable. It is not difficult math (probably 8th grade level), but you do need to pull from formulas quickly (it's good to have to 30-60-90 and shape formulas memorized) and apply them quickly.Know how to use your calculator efficiently and quickly. Minimize doing paperwork calculations, and make sure you're entering the correct numbers. Don't make silly copy-paste mistakes.If you can't come up with the answer, use process of elimination (as always), try to estimate the answer and match it up with a given answer. This is particularly important when you have an obscure figure-related problem. Approximation can also work, but it is a little risky.Maximize speed and accuracy. There is no other way to ace this section but with practice, practice, practice.For critical reading sections:Sentence completion: I know some test prep places will tell you to memorize 2,000+ words, but I think that's a little overkill. (Though you do need to do your share of vocab memorization). Direct Hits is probably the best SAT vocab book I found, and you can google it to find the PDF!The questions are in the order the information in the passage presents them. Don't read the whole passage in one sitting and turn to your questions -- answer them alongside as you read.Before you answer line specific questions (eg from line 5-10), read a little bit more than is required before you go back and answer the question.THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS IN THE PASSAGE. I always think of the SAT critical reading section as an open-book tests. All the answers are in there; you just have to dig them out.If there is one "off" word/phrase in the answers given, then CROSS IT OUT. Be extremely discerning here. There is always a reason one answer is better than the other, even if the margin is very slim. And you can master the art of finding what it is.Some friends found short phrases to summarize each paragraph helpful when they were answering to highlight main points. You can try that too. This is particularly helpful for the "general" questions they ask you ("What is the main idea of this passage?").I usually speed-read/skimmed through the paragraphs that didn't have line-specific questions. Don't waste your time trying to figure out what everything means, especially since the SAT likes to throw in complicated passages. Your only goal is to get the questions right. You don't need to understand everything.If you have trouble focusing (I know I did), then pretend you're reading the most exciting piece of literature ever. Think of your favorite book or series, and pretend you're reading it. It sounds weird to trick your brain like that, but it works.Again, practice, practice, practice.For writing/essay sections:This section, like the math section, is extremely sensitive to errors. Luckily, if you do well on the essay section, that might help you pillow your score if you do badly on the MC section. The scoring is not as predictable as the math/critical reading sections, but if it helps put in context, I got a 9 on my essay (oops) and one wrong in the MC, and landed a 790.This section is also the easiest to improve in. I remember my first practice SAT I got either a 570 or 590. Really, really easy to improve if you know what the College Board is testing.Subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, idioms, etc. are all common occurrences on the test. Memorize them, internalize them, apply them.Read out the sentences aloud. Your ear should be finely attuned to anything that sounds a little "off." Chances are if a sentence sounds weird, there's something wrong with it.HOWEVER, if you're taking the "new" SAT, they're making the SAT writing section veeeery similar to the ACT English section. I had some really weird experimental sections that looked eerily similar to the ACT... Hint, hint.The essay is really just a coin-toss, in my opinion. The highest I got was a 10, and I consider myself a relatively decent writer (enough to land me high scores in my AP classes), so don't let a low essay score make you feel unconfident about your writing abilities.That being said, fill up all two pages! Come up with your examples beforehand and practice them throughly. I liked to do at least two (one historical, on literature), and if I had time/space, then I'd do one personal.Make sure you show it has a clear link to your thesis. Writing style doesn't matter so much here and won't curry many favors (trust me), so above everything make sure your writing is clear, concise, and logical.In general:Note down every question you get wrong during your practice exams, and keep a notebook recording these errors. You'll eventually notice a pattern, and correct accordingly.Set up a study schedule, and stick to it. This is probably the hardest part, and I completely understand if studying for the SAT's might be the last thing you want to do on your planner everyday, but you need to do this.Getting a 2300+ is hard. It took me three SAT's to get there, and a whole lot of practice tests (I'd say about 30-40). If you want to consistently score in the 2300-range, then you'll probably have to do at least 40 practice tests. I know it sounds like a lot, and it is, but this is how you get into the testmaker's mind and know the test inside and out.If you only want to buy one book, then buy the BLUE BOOK. And do all 10 practice tests. Other good books: Princeton Review (relatively harder than actual SAT, especially on critical reading), McGraw-Hill (relatively easier than actual SAT in general).You can always find extra College Board released SAT exams floating around online. Google is your best friend here.Some more advice: General SAT Test Tips and Time for a Huge Post: SAT!There are no secret overnight tips or tricks that'll land you the score you want. This is all grunt-work, and you need discipline. Force yourself to study (no matter what), and reward yourself when you do!Don't cram the night before your SAT. Sleep a little earlier than normal, and wake up a little earlier than normal. Bring some snacks (two granola bars and some water), meditate a while to clear your mind. Energy drinks are generally not a good idea at this point.This was a lot to take in, but I wish you the best of luck!

Before the COVID-19 pandemic, the crime rate on South Korea’s Jeju Island had grown exponentially every year since 2002, when visa restrictions were lifted for Mainland Chinese. According to the Joong Ang Daily, by 2013, over 130 crimes had been committed on the island by Chinese tourists. Within two years, the crime rate had doubled. Before you start pointing your fingers at Chinese tourists, ask yourself how serious is jaywalking? Yes, it isn’t safe, and nor is it legal, but should the misdemeanor offense be included with felonies such as murder, robbery, and assault?In 2016, the population of Jeju Island was over 675,000. It was home to 18,000 foreigners and 8,000 illegal Chinese immigrants. Supposedly, a crime wave had hit the island, with 70 percent of all crimes committed by Chinese tourists. Media reports failed to mention that Jeju authorities include jaywalking in their annual crime statistics. It wouldn’t be difficult for a chef to prepare a lesser quality fish while out of view from the customer who ordered it, and then return the fish to the same tank so a different guest could choose it.Xin asked me to ask our waiter if he could bring the uncooked fish to our table so they could look at them and make their selections.“Are you fucking serious?” I asked.Xin detested the “f” word. As he often reminded me, those who weren’t as wealthy as his mommy were slaves.The relationship Chinese tourists have had with the Louvre Museum in Paris has been a troubled one. By 2018, almost ten percent of the Louvre museum’s annual visitors were from Mainland China, and yet Mandarin or Cantonese audio guides were unavailable. Chinese signs were placed around the museum that said defecating in public was prohibited. But where was the evidence? I visited the Louvre in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2017, and did not see a Chinese tourist, or any tourists, relieving themselves on museum grounds.I found one video on YouTube that captures a man using the bathroom outside while standing across the street from the Louvre, but his ethnicity is not revealed.The supposed uptick in feces could have been the result of a city ignoring its homeless population.In the UK, The Sun ran a story about a Chinese woman defecating in public in Monterey Park, Los Angeles County. He exercised every day. It also helped that he didn’t smoke or drink much. He wasn’t without his vices, which were sex-related. He would often say vile and sexually inappropriate things when we had dinner together. When talked about sex, Xin would refuse to tell me what he said. I couldn’t understand him, but judging Xin’s reactions, it was always lewd.Dong was holding roughly $5,000 worth of clothes that she was ready to purchase, but instead threw them on the floor. Pang was prepared to fight the manager.When the commotion began, I was sitting in a chair on the other side of the store. I hurried over and stood between Pang and the manager. Had the two of them fought, the manager would have lost.Xin and I vacationed in Honolulu twice, and both trips were not enjoyable. By then, our marriage had hit a point where it was over, but neither of us was ready to hit the eject button.She would spend the day shopping and afterward visit an indoor shooting range located above a few luxury stores. I usually hung out at the hotel bar and talked with strangers about China. A professor from Brigham Young University (BYU) asked me what the “hotel hooker scene” was like in Shanghai. I thought this was an odd question to ask a stranger. I told him I didn’t have any information on the topic. He asked me for my email, and I said I didn’t have one.When Xin would ask me to join her at the indoor shooting range, I couldn’t help but think of Ernest Hemingway's short story, “The Short and Happy Life of Francis McComber.” I imagined that while where we were shooting .44s, she would “accidentally” discharge the firearm as it was pointed at my head and not the target. Later that same night, as the ink on my death certificate had yet to dry, Xin and her new gun instructor boyfriend would be celebrating at her hotel, enjoying cocaine and champagne while laughing at the photos that they had taken of my dead body with their iPhones.During our second Hawaii visit, Xin purchased $30,000 worth of luxury handbags. She packed them in the same suitcase and then checked the bag on the return flight to Beijing. She had trust issues, but they were inconsistent. He was off-the-rails smart, but only when it came to Applied Mathematics. His wife had a borderline nervous breakdown and threatened him with divorce. She refused to leave the airport and checked in at a nearby 4-star hotel so she could harass the airline’s baggage claim department until they found their lost luggage.Three weeks later, the airline notified them that they had found their missing suitcase. Apparently, the bag had arrived on the luggage carousel at Logan Airport where it had been mistakenly claimed who by someone who was in a hurry and failed to notice that they had taken the wrong suitcase.
