PDF Editor FAQ

What makes Warhammer 40k resonate with you?

For me, it’s the combination of the lore and how you can immerse yourself in it in a way you just can’t quite in other settings. An example - in the last tabletop game I played, my lovingly painted Company Master Absalom tore through a squad of Renegade Guardsmen with his Relic Blade, an heirloom of Old Caliban that had been passed down from the first Dark Angels to the Storm Knights, his chapter. 10,000 years of history, in his hands. Countless heroes had died with it in hand, and now it was in his. With it, he had performed great feats of heroism. It’s reassuring solidity bound to the honored past, and almost served to quell his growing doubts about the Imperium and his own chapter’s secrets.40k is special to me because it lets me create my own stories and characters and represent them on the tabletop without any conflict with the standing fluff. The Storm Knights, a successor chapter to the Dark Angels founded in the 33rd millennium, aren’t just a fanfiction. They’re an actual addition to the game because I field them. That’s the real beauty of it - you can add it your own ideas and creations naturally because that’s how its set up. So long as your creation is consistent with the setting, there’s a place for it. Company Master Absalom, on paper, is a Dark Angels Company Master with Artificer Armor, a combiplasma, a Relic Blade and the Shroud of Heroes. However, stories have grown up organically around him. His epic duel with the Chaos Lord Crassus, his desperate defense of a border planet against Tyranids, his race against the Eldar to recover an rarefaction of the Fallen, his brush with Cypher - these are all part of his story. On occasion, he’s gotten so lucky/unlucky that I couldn’t come up with it by myself. 40k has a way of giving your forces a life of their own. I still remember the time a random Marine with aa plasma gun one-shotted an enemy Rhino and killed half the squad inside. I still use Brother Meleus as my lucky charm ;)As far as the lore goes, there’s room for everything. For every cackling Warp-tainted madman, there’s a tragic fallen hero. For every arrogant xeno, there’s one with surprisingly . . . human . . . motivations like family or survival. For every unthinkable cosmic horror, there’s a brave PDF militiaman holding his ground against a swarm of Tyranids, because his family live ten miles back and he’ll give everything to protect them. He will, by the way, give everything, along with thousands/millions of others. If they’re lucky and the Emperor smiles on them, they just might win the day. For now. The scope of the setting is what you make it. Want a Lovecraftian tale full of fallen heroes and unthinkable horror? Great, muster up a Chaos Warband, summon up some Daemons and go roll some corpse-worshiping chumps. Want a more relatable human tale with more defined characters? Play Killteam with some guardsmen. Point is, there is quite literally room for anyone in this beautifully messed up setting that combines so well naked terror and the evil that men do with the faint, ever present hope that it might all be worth it, that humanity will overcome and retain the best of itself.TL;DR - There’s room for creativity, go nuts, and the lore is rich enough that everyone can find some character/faction/tank to relate to.

What if the Master Chief (Halo) were a Space Marine Primarch? What would his legion, world, backstory, deeds, and legacy be like?

“Recruits! At ease!”Recruit Miles Porter minutely relaxed from the position of attention as Commissar Black swaggered down the line of the Mombasa Regiment’s 1st Battalion. For eighteen months Porter and his fellow recruits had strove to learn the skills necessary to survive on the battlefields of the 41st Millenium. Or at least, he reflected, to live as long as he could. He had already served his mandatory two year term in the PDF and had fought gangs and cultists in New Mombasa, the glittering hive that could be seen in the distance. Today, he would join the First Battalion of the Mombasa tithe regiment. They were trained as shock troops who dropped into battle from orbit and were considered among the elite of all of the Imperium’s billions of soldiers. MOThe dangers he had learned off during hours of classroom instruction had first strained his credulity. Then they simply terrified him. Now, he was resolved to do his duty for the Emperor, New Mombasa, and all mankind.Today he would board the massive Retribution class battleship Monument to His Sins and ride the Warp to battle.First, though, he would receive the emblem of the Mombasa First, a diving double Eagle. He would receive this coveted symbol of the elite shock troops of the 1st Battalion directly from the Primarch of his Regiment, the Spartan. The regimental lore had been drummed into him from his first day of his training. How the Primarch known as the Spartan was spared the scattering through the Warp of the other Primarchs by being created on New Mombasa. How he spurned the ornate, gilded heraldry of his brothers, choosing instead the unadorned artificer armor and color of the local PDF.How when he was first woken by the Emperor and offered a legion of Astartes he declined; stating he “would not be a distant, aloof exemplar, but would lead men, as they were”. Instead of a legion of the giant Astartes, the Spartan commanded three Regiments of the Imperial Guard of which the Mombasan First was the premier and most coveted. Most curious were the references to a monstrously powerful machine spirit named Cortana who rode the Spartan’s armor into battle.“First Battalion!” The prepatory command rang out with vox-amplified volume from Colonel Keyes to be echoed down the line by Captains and Lieutenants until Porter’s own First Sergeant bellowed “Platoon!”“Ah-TEN-Tion!”Miles snapped out of his reverie and back to rigid attention, eyes locked forward. As time passed, the murmurs of the inspecting officers came closer and he could feel the ground shake very slightly. Finally out of his peripheral vision he could see the massive armored bulk of the Spartan gleaming next to the white-uniformed Colonel Keyes. They drew closer as the Spartan said something inaudible to each recruit, handed them something, and briefly shook their hand.Suddenly, it seemed to Miles, the Spartan was in front of Deel, the recruit on his right. The Spartan was speaking but still Miles couldn’t hear him. The Colonel clapped Deel on the shoulder and now they executed a perfect “duck walk” to stand in front of Miles.Miles looked up, moving only his eyes, and saw his face reflected in the golden visor of the Spartan’s armor nearly three feet above his own head.“Recruit Miles Porter.” The voice coming through a vox unit in the green armor is was firm and strong, but it was quiet. Porter had heard Lord Guilliman speak after his return to the Emperor’s living service, and the Spartan’s voice was nothing like the Lord of the Ultramarines.None of the bombast. None of the glorious baritone. None of the… pride.“My Lord!” Miles yelled, saluting with his fist to his heart. The Spartan stood still and, without a visible face, Miles could not tell what the giant figure was thinking. Another voice, a feminine alto, chuckled softly through the vox. “They are all so earnest, John,” said the soft voice. The Spartan gently shook his head once. “No. Not lord, Recruit Porter. ‘Sir’ will suffice,” the vox unit crackled again with barest hint of a wry smile.“Yes, m-Sir!”“And you are no longer a recruit,” said the Spartan, holding up the golden diving eagle insignia and placing it into Miles hand.“Bear it well, Guardsman.”And with that the ground shook again as the Spartan moved down the line.“Oh yes, my son. I saw the Spartan,” said Miles Porter, quietly, as he lifted his cup of wine with his replacement augmetic hand.“And so will you, tomorrow. I am so proud to see you graduate.”

Can I build a private runway right into my backyard capable to land an Airbus A380?

Back in 1989, one dude named John, and his sons John, Dennis Neil and Joe purchased a concrete plant in Regional Queensland.Over a period of 20 years or so, they expanded their business to include 19 concrete plant all around Brisbane, employing 1100 people, specializing in pre-cast concrete, reinforced steel, and also designing major construction projects in Australia. In the late 2000’s they began diversifying overseas, including a large infrastructure project in Sakhalin Island, Russia, utilizing fiber technology products, capable of surviving sub-zero temperatures better. Now a thriving family of millionaires, the family decided to build an airport. Budgeting $100 million dollars for the project. They submitted their plan for a large-scale airport and industrial development. There’s some controversy that they used a loophole from the Toowoomba Regional Council which was being amalgamated from several earlier councils, on the last day before the cut off time for submissions being able to be received before the new amalgamated council rules took effect, meaning that there was minimal time for approvals. The submission was also completed without consultation with local airspace owners, particularly the Department of Defense which controls the airspace of nearby Oakey and Amberley military restricted airspace Army and Air Force bases. The first new “greenfields” major airport to be built in Australia for 50 years, built entirely with their own private money, their airport was completed in 20 months from acquisition of the land, to the first landing of a 747 cargo jet.The airport is a Category E airport, and regularly handles 747–8 freighter aircraft (once a week scheduled flights) and 747–400 aircraft. Regional airline Qantaslink also fly there daily in the Q400 aircraft, as the airport is close to the town of Toowoomba, Queensland.Like many airports in Australia, Toowoomba Brisbane West Wellcamp airport is operated as an uncontrolled “CTAF” airport, with pilots using a designated VHF frequency to make broadcasts on in the circuit to co-ordinate separation. For context, there are only 33 airports in Australia with an Air Traffic Control tower, and 197 airports registered overall in the country. That means that the Toowoomba Brisbane West Wellcamp airport is one of 164 non-controlled airports in the country. When departing, any aircraft flying on an IFR flightplan (from a Cessna 152 to a 747) will request an airways clearance and transponder code from the overlying Centre controller, who controls tens of airports and potentially thousands of square miles of airspace from the same frequency. Before moving, the pilot of the IFR aircraft would then broadcast a message on the Common Traffic Advisory frequency advising of their intended movements, and once again before entering the runway for takeoff. When landing, the pilots would have been in contact with the Centre Controller which would have been monitoring their progress for hundreds of miles of flight via radar. That controller would advise them of any other IFR traffic that might be going toward Wellcamp airport, which runway is advised for landing based on prevailing weather conditions, and then approve a change of frequency to the CTAF. The pilots would broadcast their position on the CTAF frequency (Common Traffic Advisory Frequency frequency) on the VHF radio, and co-ordinate with any other airplanes in the area on the same frequency. There are certain reports that are strongly recommended regarding when the inbound IFR traffic should broadcast, and standard phraseology required. Some of this is covered in the document from the Civil Aviation Safety Authority 166-01.pdf, I include the relevant section below. While the Wellcamp airport does not have an Air Traffic Control tower, it does have a fully rated Fire Response and Rescue system. Refueling capacity complete with fuel farm and underground tanks, a full passenger terminal complete with preflight security and baggage sorting, a Cargo storage and sorting area capable of housing live sheep and cattle en-mass for live transport via cargo planes to Asia.Since 2015, the University of Southern Queensland has used the airport for flight training for the flying school unit of their Aviation degree.Currently 4 airlines fly to the airport on a scheduled basis, including Qantaslink, Airnorth, Regional Express Airlines and Cathay Pacific Cargo.Due to the proximity of the Oakey Army airfield, the approach and landing pattern to the airport is offset to the runway, requiring a reasonably tight right hand circuit when landing on the east facing runway, lining up with the runway less than half a mile from the runway threshold. Most RNAV arrivals for large aircraft line up with the runway as much as 15 miles out, but this one lines up at the minimum descent altitude, just 680ft above the runway. The departure is also similarly hampered by airspace, requiring IFR aircraft departing the runway to the west to make a left hand turn essentially at the departure end of the runway.Controversies aside, their council zoning request was accepted, and they built an airport, called “Brisbane West” in a country town called Toowoomba, 130km west of Brisbane. And that’s how one of Australia’s richest families built an Airport.Tourism heroes: Wagner family open Wellcamp airport

Good price. Well designed interface. Could be easier to manage documents, but it's way better than others I have tried.
