PDF Editor FAQ

Is the "never give up" attitude always helpful?

Many people’s were written about the great legends life, but here I like to share my personal experience of Never Give Up just to motivate readers. I was a village boy until my 10th grade. When I was at 8th grade I used to play long jump on behalf of my School . Long Jump is a sport(track and field event) which attract lesser number of spectators as it seems to be a boring sport for spectators. So I switched my sport to High Jump which attracts more spectators than any other track and field sports. There will be No Coaching, No Practice and Obviously nothing from my school. I used to Bunk my classes for one day when Our District Sports club announce a sports event. I’m just curious teen to win a certificate in high jump since I was at grade 8th. Unfortunately, each year I secured 4th Place.8th Grade - Secured 4th place9th Grade -Secured 4th place10th Grade - Not Allowed by School (public Exam)11th Grade -Secured 4th place12th Grade - Not Allowed by School (public Exam)Until here I used Scissor cut high jump techniqueScissor cut High Jump Exactly looks like the above picture. Now I was admitted to a College for Engineering degree as usual (another Engineering Student). One day, I used to think “I Do Never Give Up” then why don’t I still won a single Certificate. So I realize something is missing. So I went straight to our College’s Physical Trainer and told my Complete history about my sports and curiosity of owning a single certificate. I’m helpless here too because our college don’t provide high jump mat which cost around( 2,00,000 INR) because they don’t have any. So I decided to Cycling to another Physical Trainer College(just 4km from my college) after every 5.00 PM when our College’s last bell rang. They gave me a permission to practice after knowing my curiosity. Now I got a High Jump Mat and started training myself. From second day, I brought mobile phone and watch youtube because I hardly need to change my jumping technique. So I found Fosbury Flop technique is the best way to win a certificate.Fosbury Flop High Jump Exactly looks like the above picture. While training myself to Fosbury Flop I fell down many times out of the bed and hurt myself badly. After 20 days of practice I had an Anna University Zonal Athletic meet in my first year of College. Where 43 College’s participated and more or less 112 athlete were in High Jump Event, I felt like ooohh its huge competition. I used my Scissor cut technique which helped me to overcome 108 athlete’s. Now 4 sportsmen were in the field (ooh no, again there is a possibility of securing 4th place).I continued with scissor cut as I’m not much familiar with fosbury flop technique. As a result, I lost First and Second Place, me and other guy is competing for third place. This event held Women’s arts and science college everyone’s(100+ girls and 25+ boys) focus on me for one final jump to secure third place. I decided to go with recently learnt Fosbury Flop Technique and It work like a charm and everyone cheered up for me with a chant Come on Mari!!! (as they saw fosbury flop for the very first time)looks similar to this with more claps and sounds. But I don’t know any of them. They found my name in back of my jersey(T-shirt) and finally, I got my certificate1.60 meters in high jump may not be a big deal and I’m not a olympic medalist and I just worked for single certificate and I won. Later I felt this certificate is not much worthier than 75+ girls chanting for you. What I like to convey.Never Give Up attitude will not always helps for you until you learn from your previous mistake. (Never Give Up attitude will just keep you in track)Motivational Quotes and other legend’s motivational speech will not last long enough for you, more than getting motivated from your previous Never Give Up attitude(whether it is small or big that’s not the case). Now I use this behaviour of me, whenever I was thrown into tough situation. Thanks for reading.

What are the best vertical jumps of professional high jumpers?

Unlike other sports such as basketball and football, vertical leap is not commonly used as a metric in track and field, even in the jumping events. For this reason, it’s pretty rare for track athletes to list their vertical leap on their bios or profiles, even among the ones who actually know their vert.Vertical leap is often an exaggerated and miscalculated measurement. It’s also a very inconsistent measurement, as different places have different standards for what qualifies as vertical leap.At official football combines, vertical leap is calculated strictly by a standing jump with no steps leading into it. The measurement - taken using a Vertec or similar system - takes the difference between one’s upwardly outstretched arm while standing and the highest marker one can hit during a jump. This is the most accurate way of measuring vert.Jamie Collins jumped an impressive 41.5 inches at the NFL combineIn some gyms, vertical leap is measured as the ability to get one’s feet atop an object from a standstill, such as jumping on a high plyo box. For example, Kevin Bania, below, is often listed as having the world record for vertical jump for his leap atop a 64 inch stack of weights. In other places, athletes are allowed to do a one-step and plant leading into the jump, similar to an outside hitter in volleyball taking the penultimate step and jump before going for a spike.Others do rough estimates of a player's jump after a running approach, such as measuring an NBA player’s height off the ground based on how high the player is on a running dunk. DJ Stephens has the highest officially recorded NBA vertical jump at 46 inches, but it’s not uncommon to see claims of other players going over 50 inches based on dunks, rebounds, rim grabs, or stunts.DJ Stephens kisses the rim during a running approach and jump.So depending on where and how an athlete gets their vert measured, they can be told wildly different numbers.Specific to high jump, vertical leap isn’t entirely relevant because the event is less about boosties and more about body control. Jumping high is only useful for the ability to scissor over a bar, but that technique doesn’t win in championship meets. All of the elites use the Fosbury flop, and while leaping ability gets one high off the ground, it also takes exceptional body control to drive oneself off the ground while jumping parallel to the par, twist in mid air, drive up one’s hips, and then pull one’sentire body over to clear the bar.The main metric for estimating leaping ability for a high jumper is called height differential. In short, it’s the difference between one’s height and the highest height that one has cleared. So if a male who stands 6 ft. tall clears a bar at 6 ft. in the high jump, his height differential is 0 inches. By contrast, if an athlete who is 6 ft. tall clears a bar at 7 ft., then his height differential is 12 inches. This metric is ideal for high jump because it bears in mind that hops are relative. It’s pretty marvelous to see some of the great Russian jumpers like Andrey Silnov and Yaroslav Rybakov jump 7’ 9.5” (2.38 m), but it’s important to bear in mind that they’re both 6’6” in height. By contrast, Linus Thörnblad of Sweden jumps the same height, yet he’s only 5’10”.Linus Thörnblad cleared 2.38m in Goteborg, Sweden in 2007; it's one of the top 20 marks of all time. The record for the highest differential for men was set by both Stefan Holm of Sweden and Franklin Jacobs of the U.S., who each can clear 1 ft. 11 inches (0.59m) above their heads. Holm, the 2004 Olympic champ who stands 5’10”, has a personal best of 7 ft 10.25 in., which is tied for the eighth highest mark ever recorded.Stefan HolmOn the women’s side, the record is also a tie between Antonietta di Martino of Italy and Inika McPherson of the USA; they each jump 1 ft 1.75 in. above their height. Inika competed in Berkeley three years after me, so I’ve had the pleasure of seeing her jump for many years. It never gets old seeing a tiny, tattooed woman who is barely 5’4” clearing a 6’6” high jump bar.Inika McPherson beat Brigetta Barrett and Chaunte Lowe at the 2014 US National Championships with a jump of 6'6", almost 14 inches above her own height. The only high jumper I know of who advertises his vertical leap is two-time Olympic medalist Hollis Conway of the U.S. His vertical leap is only 31 inches, which by most standards is just above average. However, he stands just 6 feet tall and has cleared 7’ 10.25 in the high jump, tying him with Stefan Holm for the eighth highest mark of all time. His differential is 22.25 inches, the sixth best of all time. Based on this you can see that it doesn’t take an out-of-this-world hops to be an accomplished high jumper.Ultimately, few high jump athletes and coaches use vertical leap as a measurement of an athlete’s abilities because it doesn’t necessarily reflect ability in the event. Raw jumping ability is helpful, but body control and technique are much more important.

Why aren't Olympic athletes diving in the long jump?

The question is basically asking why the Superman technique is not commonly used in the long jump. The Superman technique is a jumping method in which the jumper dives forward with his or her arms, torso and legs in a straight line, paralleling the ground, similar to Superman soaring through the skies. The idea behind this technique is that one would be more aerodynamic in this position, thus it could be a way to gain distance. While this form can be used in long jump, it is among the worst choices of jumping technique possible, as it would result in a lousy takeoff and a horrible (and painful) landing. To understand why this technique is not a viable option, one must first get a solid understanding of the basic components of long jumping. These components are: the approach, the jump, the flight, and the landing. The approach is when the athlete sprints down the runway, picking up the necessary horizontal momentum to carry them through the air once they jump. The approach includes the final two strides – and that critical penultimate step – in which the jumper lowers their center of gravity to prepare for the explosive jump.Carl Lewis sprinting down the runwayThe takeoff is where the jumper plants one foot and explodes off the board. The name of the event might suggest that the jumper is trying to jump horizontally, but this is untrue. The objective of the takeoff is to get as vertical as possible by powering off the board and driving the lead knee upward. The higher the jump, combined with the speed from the runway, will allow the jumper to travel farther.Dwight Phillips after takeoffThe flight is where the in-air technique comes in. The most basic motion is to extend one’s legs forward, as high and tight to the upper body as possible. Other in-air techniques include the hang and the hitch kick. The preference of form is up to the jumper, but the ultimate goal is to maximize hang time.Heike Drechsler showing off her excellent in-air extension. The landing is how the jumper enters the sand pit. The general idea is to position one’s body in the best way to maximize horizontal distance covered, and more importantly, not lose any grounds by doing something like falling backward. This is why the landing involves extending the upper and lower body forward, keeping the center of gravity ahead of the hips.Greg Rutherford landing. Notice how he falls sideways to avoid losing ground. The Superman technique has several problems relative to the above-mentioned components. In order to get one’s body in the Superman position, one would have to jump horizontally rather than vertically. Getting one's body in that position is simply impossible if the objective is to jump high. Since it would be a lower, more horizontal jump, it would effectively negate all of the momentum the jumper picked up during the approach. Rather than seeing a high-flying leap, this would be a low-flying jump with limited hang-time.While the Superman form would be aerodynamic, it would basically be useless. The long jumper is not moving fast enough and is not in the air long enough for the gains in aerodynamics to outweigh the losses in speed and vertical lift. The form would also fail to maximize hang time. With a properly executed long jump, the trajectory of the jumper resembles an arc. With the Superman technique, the trajectory would be a downward slope. The landing for the Superman technique would be a disaster. Since there is no way to move one’s body lower body forward in mid air, the jumper would most likely have a face first impact with the ground. The jumper would get a mouthful of dirt and would likely be in pain, as their unprotected and completely vulnerable torso would take the full force of the sand pit (which is only soft when you land properly).Even worse, because the long jump measurement is from the part of the body that lands closest to the takeoff board, the Superman jumper would be measured from where his feet landed. So even if this Superman jumper were able to somehow defy physics and have his fingers reach Mike Powell’s world record of 29’ 4.25”, because the measurement would be taken from toes - and this jumper is lying flat on his stomach - the final mark would be at least seven feet back, resulting in a 22 foot jump. Given all of the factors listed above, the more likely scenario is that an elite jumper would only reach 24 feet with their hands, and then be deducted down to a 17 foot jump. All told, diving is not a good technique for the event. It would create major losses in every phase of the long jump. The Superman technique is also doable in the high jump. However, it is the least effective of the main jumping techniques and is almost never done in an actual competition. Even athletes who haven’t mastered the Fosbury Flop would be better served using the straddle or Western roll instead. Supermanning it is just inefficient. So if you ask me, the only place diving belongs on a track is at the finish line in a race.Christian Smith and Khadevis Robinson dive for the finish line at the 2008 Olympic trials. Smith's dive earned him 3rd place in the race and a spot on the U.S. Olympic team.
