I can think of one very famous occasion where HM the Queen publically put her foot down with the government of the day. The way she chose to do it was both incredibly subtle and pure genius.A past government was strongly considering a border poll and negotiating to basically kick Northern Ireland out of the UK.HM the Queen chose her speech from the Throne at the State Opening of Parliament to make her point.She started as she always does, ‘I Elizabeth the Second, Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain (very long meaningful pause) and (another even longer meaningful pause and very frank stares towards the Government benches) Northern Ireland.' HM the Queen then proceeded to give the speech as usual.But her pauses and stares were noticed. People in Northern Ireland were thrilled at her intervention and more so the government very quickly and quietly dropped any mention of getting rid of Northern Ireland.I still have a vague memory of how pleased my mom and great aunts and uncles were with the Queen. My aunt saying ‘she’s a great girl’. I can see our neighbours all gathering outside in the square to discuss it all. Us kids playing but also being aware that something big was being discussed.I would say that was a very public open and genius way she chose to put her foot down with the government.
