PDF Editor FAQ

Is a Navy Corpsman considered a marine if he serves with the Marines?

My wife is in the Navy and recently was assigned to a "Field Medical Training Battalion" (FMTB). There are two, one at Camp Pendleton, CA and another at Camp Johnson, Camp Lejeune, NC. Before a Sailor, either a corpsman or Religious Program Specialist (RP) gets assigned to an operational Marine Corps unit, they must go through FMTB. They are trained by both USMC and USN personnel. The schoolhouse is under USMC Training Command. It doesn't matter what rate the Sailor is, they won't be assigned to an FMF unit until they complete the 8 week FMTB course first. It is not uncommon to have E-7 HMCs required to complete FMTB if they never have been "Green Side."The 8 week course is designed to familiarize Sailors with the way the Marine Corps operates. They will learn USMC customs and protocol, they will go out in the field to learn basic infantry tactics, they will go on conditioning hikes and runs, and they will learn field medicine under stress of battle. Upon completion of the 8 weeks, they will achieve the 8404 NEC. Then they will be qualified to report to an FMF USMC unit. After being assigned to the FMF, the training continues. They will work on obtaining another "FMF" qualification pin. The qualification is difficult because they will be tested on everything the Marine Corps is or does.FMF Sailors, either HMs or RPs will be fully integrated into their USMC units. They will wear the same MARPAT cammie uniform. If they earn the resect of their Marines, they will be called "Doc," They won't be full "Marines," but they will be the closest thing to a Marine as one can get because everywhere their Marines go...... they go there with them. Some Sailors assigned to the FMF will identify more with the Marines than the Navy. It's like Stockholm Syndrome.... those Sailors were "captured by Marines and self-identify more with their captors," than the will with being in the Navy. Hope this help/

Every profession has "lingo" or short-hand terms that are unique to that profession. What are some examples from your field that may not be so well-known?

Well, I was a Blueshirt SPY guy on a small boy so I think I can add a few to this one.Bluejacket (or, as above Blueshirt): US Navy Enlisted personnel below E-7, that is, below Chief Petty Officer. (How's it goin' Chief Holleman?)SPY guy: It's what sailors working on the SPY-1 RADAR would refer to themselves as. I was a SPY guy.Small boy: This has been covered but it refers to ships other than the Aircraft Carrier. I don't think it was applied to much other than Destroyers, Frigates and Cruisers.Deck, Overhead, Bulkhead, Hatch, Ladder (Ladderwell): Floor, Ceiling, Wall, Door, Stairs (Stairwell):Lines: Ropes aboard ship. Also cables of various sorts.Tin Can: Also in reference to Destroyers, Frigates, and Cruisers.Bubblehead: Slightly disparaging term for Submariners.Deck Ape: Slightly disparaging term for the personnel in charge of maintaining the ship itself. The paint, lines, etc.Snipe: Slightly disparaging term for Engineers.Turd Chaser: Within the Engineers there is a rate called HT (Hull Technician). Despite their name they served as the ship's plumbers. A vital role if an unglamorous one.Twidget: Slightly disparaging term for the Combat Systems rates.Combat Systems: Equipment and personnel working on or around the ship's ability to fight.Rate: The job an enlisted person has. Mine was FC; Fire Controlman.Pecker-Checker: Corpsman, the Navy Medic. Although...Doc: What you call the Corpsman as a sign of respect. If the ship took a hit and sailors got hurt you don't get a Doctor. You get Doc. Your life (and, just as importantly, inoculation record) is in their hands. You take care of Doc.Shipmate: Supposedly a term to increase Esprit de Corps. It's actually what someone who can't see your rate insignia would call you when they wanted to chew you out. (You usually referred to an enlisted person by their rate. I was FC3 Morgan, read "Eff-See Three.") You quickly learned to hate being called Shipmate.Training Video: Porn tape. Strictly contraband but that was never really an impediment.Airedale/Brown Shoe: Pilots.Vampire: Enemy missile. Not a fun thing to hear in CIC.CIC: Combat Information Center. The brain of the ship.Sliders and Rollers: Hamburgers and hot dogs.Berthing: Where the beds are. Often referred to in terms of what part of the ship's crew slept there. On my ship we had Snipe Berthing, Combat Systems Berthing and Deck Berthing.Goat Locker: Chiefs' Berthing. Don't ask me why it's called that.Rack/Pit: Bed.Coffin Locker: Where you store most of your stuff aboard ship. Incidentally it was located directly underneath your rack.Heave out and Trice Up: Wake up!Trice up: The bottom most rack (they were in stacks of three) could be lifted up and secured to the bottom of the rack above it thus allowing more floor space that could be cleaned. It was fun to trice up a rack with someone in it...well, not so much for the person getting triced up.Cover: Uniform Hat.Dixie Cup: The white hat that went with certain uniforms.Cracker Jacks: The enlisted Service Dress uniform. You would wear a Dixie Cup with your Cracker Jacks.Johnny Cashes: Winter standard uniform. You would wear a pisscutter with this one.Pisscutter: What we called the Garrison Cover. It's the other hat we wear. The Navy is an odd little world but I loved it.

What happens when an FMF corpsman outranks the Marines in the unit he is in?

I believe the Marines get IDC certified corpsmen just like the Submarine force.IDC…. Independent Duty Corpsman. You can read the equivalence to civilian sector as Nurse Practitioner with minor surgery training. They are usually E-5 and above and have been around and have the experience. These are the type of people you want working the Emergency Room at your local hospital. The “Doc” on my first sub was older a bit than the average crewman on board. Three tours in Vietnam. The first in a hospital then two in country with the Marines. Now, he needed a ship board tour for making E-7 and chose subs.Doc was the one that taught me how to fire an M-14 on rock and roll without it being a spray and pray. (Hint, use a welding glove so you don’t burn your hand on the foregrip while holding it down and swiveling from the hip.)The issue with a corpsman outranking someone in the unit… Situational Authority. The expert takes over when needed.
