Switzerland is the most fortified region of the world.Up until recently, all Swiss houses had a nuclear shelter complete with air filtration system, food supplies, chemical toilets and bunks. Apartment buildings had communal shelters large enough to accommodate all residents.The Swiss didn't stop there; they built thousands of bunkers and fortifications - 26,000 still in service according to one count - throughout the country. Some these were field fortifications but the Swiss do like their underground construction and there are are dozens of large underground fortresses large enough house hundreds of soldiers, all cunningly camouflaged.Here's a typical example: looks like your average quaint Swiss chalet, right?Wrong: it is underground fortress - Fort Pré-Giroud - defending a pass over the Jura Mountains.The chalet is actually the main block house. The upper windows are painted on. The lower windows open to reveal machine guns and a 75mm cannon. Rather than protect the rear of the bunker with barbed wire (a dead giveaway), they made a thicket of trees from sheet steel.The main bunker is defended by a number of outworks camouflaged as rock outcroppings and barns.Or you might be tooling along the road by picturesque Lake Geneva when you spy a distinctive house:It's not a house, it's a bunker defending the tail end of the Toblerone Line (<http://www.toblerones.ch/the-toblerone-line>).That alpine barn may be concealing an artillery bunker:That mountain crag may really be an observation post and gun platform:

There are lots of unique and interesting activities that you can do in Kyrgyzstan, ranging from hiking in the wilderness, collecting walnuts, bathing in salty alpine lakes, or staying in yurts!I wrote another answer about some activities before. From Avantour.Kyrgyzstan is perhaps most famous among some tourist circles for its yurt hotels. If you’re looking for a unique staying experience then I highly recommend that you try some of the yurt camps all over Kyrgyzstan! There are many near beautiful alpine lakes such as Song-Kul, and they’re usually under 40 USD a night. From Warren Photographic.Yurts are definitely one of the more unique experiences in Kyrgyzstan as they are a central tenet of the culture here. Though other central Asian cultures used them in the past, to me it seems that only Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia still use the yurt a lot.Speaking of the lakes…Alpine LakesLake Issyk-Kul is the world’s second-largest alpine lake, and by far the deepest (it’s the tenth largest lake by volume). It is likely Kyrgyzstan’s most popular tourist destination, attracting summer visitors from Russia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and recently, China. Resort towns have formed from this business and there are seasonal amusement parks to enjoy.A beautiful photo of Issyk-Kul from Tripadvisor!Like the aforementioned Song-Kul, there are dozens of other beautiful lakes. many are harder to reach, but they tend to be worth it; there is one heated turquoise lake that requires traversing a mountain pass to reach.It’s definitely worth it to visit these alpine lakes to get a unique experience. They tend to be far less polluted, saltier, and more translucent, making for a beautiful swim.Walnut CollectingKyrgyzstan has the world’s largest walnut forest; Arslanbob. Located in a valley and surrounded by beautiful snow-capped mountains, every year locals travel to collect some of the delicious walnuts that grow here.The Arslanbob forest beside mountains. From Heart My Backpack.Apart from the walnuts, Arslanbob forest is also beautiful to hike in. As you travel through the forest to find the perfect walnuts you’ll stop by many freshwater streams and waterfalls that look beautifully scenic. There are also some Islamic shrines and prayer caves in the region, as legend has it that the first walnut planted here was by a disciple of the Prophet.Arslanbob is one of Kyrgyzstan’s less known beauties; there are a few travel bloggers who have visited it, but many don’t know about Arslanbob yet. I say take this opportunity to collect more walnuts for yourself!SightseeingSpecifically, communist sightseeing.Kyrgyzstan isn’t a communist nation, but the capital, Bishkek, is very popular amongst fans of the Soviet architectural style because it is one of the only cities in the entire world, and probably the only one that chooses to, continue building Soviet-style blocks, with Lenin statues around them.Muslim Kyrgyz praying beside the Lenin statue in the downtown.It’s become a cultural thing more than anything else. Instead of keeping them drab and gray, Bishkek paints them and makes them look gorgeous. It’s become a part of the city, and a modern skyline wouldn’t look the same. It wouldn’t be able to up Astana anyways.Here is my mother beside some colourful communist-style buildings.There are many other activities to do in Kyrgyzstan, but you won’t find a lot of these specific things in other countries. You can also go to central Asia’s largest bazaar in Bishkek, hike many mountains, and simply go to circuses, theatres, and zoos if it interests you.Enjoy Kyrgyzstan!

A vibrant democracy, freedom of worship and assembly, peaceable relations with other countries, and a people who have tried very hard to put behind the "warlike" stereotype. And this is before he would discover that his party's salute is banned, his statues and monuments gone, and that the country is multicultural and globalized. He'd be furious.I imagine he'd retire to some alpine village to console himself with his dogs and painting and to write a memoir, which would be banned.
