I think people who once upon a time would have been just considered “eccentric”, “odd”, “a colourful character” have felt the need for diagnosis because there is a LOT more discrimination in the workplace, happening in the name of what is euphemistically called “cultural fit”.Once upon a time, all I needed to do to get and keep a job was turn up when I was supposed to, perform whatever tasks I was given (within reason), turn the work around punctually and to a professional standard. I didn’t have to like it. All I had to do was be professional and get on with it.I noticed a cultural change in the business world from approximately the mid-2000s onwards. Suddenly, it wasn’t enough to be reliable, professional and have good skills. Organisations wanted to play Sigmund Freud. I was no longer asked to demonstrate mastery of Procedure X, I was asked questions to tease out what motivated me. Teamwork became redefined to no longer be about understanding your job and those of your colleagues so that processes and flows could be handled efficiently. It increasingly became about interpersonal relationships and whose faces fit, until actual competence often became secondary. Performance appraisals filled up with subjective criteria like “attitude”, “communication”, “soft skills” and so on that were an open goal for any manager who didn’t like the cut of your jib.That “odd” person in the corner, regardless of how experienced and skilled, could be gotten rid of after sufficient lukewarm paper trail had been built up. A diagnosis won’t stop a really determined organisation from finding a way to get rid of you, but it might make them stop and think about how deep their pockets are first.

Then what will you have to work for next year”.I was crushed and dumbfounded. It was unbelievable to the others persons as well. Within a few months, I found another job. Karma stepped in. Boss called me within a month and asked me to return as the other gals were leaving.I declined.
