These individuals also do a good job of making a barrier between the grieving family the any WBC types present.Local police have largely learned that they are under no obligation to personally protect WBC members, and will find themselves not in the area.This has largely led us back to the first point. They want to sue. Not bleed out on the pavement, even if that would make for better videos on liveleak.All in all, it’s a problem that has largely solved itself.

Since the question asks about positive qualities, assuming that any problematic qualities are set aside, then it seems to me that the Church and its members have quite a few:The WBC has a fairly high degree of transparency and openness. Although they are often compared to various sects or cults, the WBC is not secretive or covert. To the contrary, they are quite accessible, let reporters and other people come into their homes and observe them in action.The WBC folks are not pretentious and they are straightforward about what they believe and do. They don't obfuscate, they don't hedge, what you see is what you get.I found most of them to be hospitable and pretty friendly -- at least in interactions off the picket line, where there is less tension or hostility from others.They are strong advocates of free speech and they are pursuing a rigorous campaign that (if only as a byproduct) protects free speech in the U.S.They have spoken against racism and against Christian justifications for racism. They have a track record in supporting African-American civil rights. (This point requires some elaboration and critical analysis, but it is positive that they want to be recognized for this support.)The WBC uses the admirable tactics of non-violent protest. They are very disciplined in this regard, though there have been deviations, and they have disfellowshipped member(s) who did not fit this approach.They offer members a tight-knit community that shares much in common (e.g., beliefs and activities). To be sure, this can be a double-edge sword for people (e.g., their children) who don't fit in or accept the Church.They are very cooperative among themselves, e.g., they help built each other's homes. (Cf. the Amish?)They put their lives on the line for what they believe in. (Well, this is often seen as a positive quality, e.g., heroism.)From what I can tell, they keep their word and their agreements, including occasional negotiated agreements. While people disagree with them strongly, the WBC does not seem to be considered dishonest. (There are times when they may be somewhat misleading, and I know of an instance when an apology was given for this.)They believe strongly in morality and proper ethical conduct. (To be sure, most Americans reject their specific moral beliefs regarding their public ministry.)They send their children to public schools and they contribute to the economy through their employment. They vote and Fred Phelps has run for public office. So, they arguably fulfill civic duties and fit (many) criteria for good citizenship.Again, the purpose of this answer is not an overall assessment, but rather a list of illustrative positive qualities of the Church and its members.
