What did Medieval peasants do once they reached what we now consider retirement age? Would their families or the church care for them? Was there some kind of job they could be entrusted with now they can't plough a field?

The average life span in Medieval times was 40. 40 was aged. Keep in mind women married and began having children as soon as they reached puberty/menses. Many children died very young and many women died in childbirth. Survival was tough, very tough. There were wars, plagues, and hard work on the land. 40 was very old. I did my graduate research on the medieval period concerning death and dying and the ubiquitous Ars Moriendi documents which were handbooks for accompanying the dying and preparing oneself for the inevitable. Death was a constant companion, keep in mind. It was not sanitized or hidden away in hospitals and under the care of professionals. It was generally happening in the home, and the sick or injured were cared for by family and friends. The idea of “retirement” is a very new idea and came into being with the industrial age as something people laboring away their lives in factories could look forward to enjoying. Unfortunately they, too, didn’t live that long, having been worn out in factories and hard work for others. That’s why retirement plans were generous — few lived long enough to receive those benefits for any length of time! Now that people live longer and healthier lives, you see employers have balked at pensions and given them up altogether in favor of IRAs.Back to medieval times. Another person who answered referenced perhaps “wealthy peasants” lived longer. That’s an oxymoron. There were no wealthy peasants. If they were wealthy, they wouldn’t be peasants, they would be indentured servants, they wouldn’t be SERFS! They’d be landowners and merchants and in different class altogether! And yes, they might live a bit longer, but in general wars and plagues did not discriminate by social class. The great breakthrough of understanding cleanliness as something that prevents disease had yet to happen! So retirement did not exist. One worked until one could not work, and one’s family took care of you, and at times took care of neighbors who had no one left to care for them. Hence the Ars Moriendi booklets — they were literal guidebooks to help people approach death. It was thought by helping others, a kind of Hospice care in medieval times, you also prepared yourself. There were not enough priests or nuns or monks to do the job, so these books proliferated in all languages across Europe to help lay people help each other to die “well”. Ars Moriendi means, “The Art of Dying Well,” or, “the Good Death.” It was thought one must prepare for death and not leave a mess behind — the latter more apropos to those with wealth than to a poor peasant. To die “happy” or satisfied was a great accomplishment, and one began preparing long before one’s own death as to try to do this on the deathbed was a terribly onerous task, and often unsuccessful. The bitter dying person was a reality. The person holding on to goods and animals and land . . . common. It was about letting go, reviewing the good done, telling stories, stories of faith and hope, and calling on the saints and angels to accompany one across the threshold of death into the next life. Very intricate, and frankly very engaging with applications for today as well. They weren’t afraid of death as modern humans are — the were acquainted with it and dealt with it personally, hands on.So retirement? Laughable. That is a modern concept and a modern phase of life.We now have a whole period of life to do other things than the main thing we did to earn a living and save something for retirement. What will we do with it? I will tell you I’m retired and loving it! I’m busier than ever, but with no hours to keep and no employer to please. That’s very, very good. My own creativity and interests come first, and running a household, and traveling. Yay. These are things a medieval person of age could not even consider. We are fortunate. Use it well.

What are the options available after BDS other than MDS?

My question to you is, what is it that ticks your mind?Choices are aplenty :)Assuming you are from India my answer has been phrased accordingly.Too eager to join the bandwagon of moneymakers after graduation (BDS of course), my mind was relentlessly searching for the ‘right job.’A common mistake that many freshers and still confused dentists like me make is the tendency to compare themselves with their peers, both from the medical and non-medical backgrounds.A huge chunk of the non-medical crowd has the luxury of getting placed in different companies or corporate organizations and are compensated accordingly. Quick money is a huge boost to the ego I must say.Others move ahead to pursue their masters in India or abroad, find a great job or start up something of their own. This isn't an easy process, but it does have its benefits. If you look at the statistics, there is a surplus of dental colleges in India (mostly private). Together combined with dental graduates from Government aided institutions, that's a huge number of dentists being produced per annum! But the uneven distribution of dentists in urban and rural areas creates a saturation in the former and lacks in the latter.Oops! That went a wee bit away from the topic. So, coming back to the subject, there was a time when I was on the lookout for all the things one can consider doing after BDS (Apart from doing an MDS).Here are a few options which you may find useful -Join a clinic, learn, learn and learn!Keen on building a career in clinical dentistry? Find a good clinic, and join ASAP. There is no dearth of the amount of experience you can gain in the process.Since most seasoned dentists do not immediately keep a fresher/new employee on their payroll, say hello to the period of observation. A word to the wise - do not take this period lightly.See and understand the way your boss works vs what you were taught in college. There is a huge difference in theoretical and practical knowledge. Observe how he/she talks to patients, get an insight on people and clinical skills.Ask questions, study again and again and again. Show your dedication enough and you may get to perform routine procedures as time passes. Your tenure under somebody's wing is the best time to understand the nuances of practice management, how a clinic functions, etc.Gain your boss's trust and you shall not fail. But do understand that being paid handsomely is an expectation that should be saved for later and not now. Practice well, learn well.PharmacovigilanceClinical research and pharmacovigilance are fields presently in high demand because of understandable concerns in drug safety. After noticing the adverse effects of thalidomide in the year 1961, adverse drug effects have become a highly sensitive issue.A career in pharmacovigilance lets you enhance and keep track of patient safety and improve patient care. Reputed IT companies are looking for people with a life sciences background who can make good decision-makers and vigilantes.Institutes like Cliniminds and many others offer online and classroom courses in pharmacovigilance.Forensic DentistryThe investigative bug caught you yet? If crime series like CSI, Criminal Minds, Crime Patrol and our very own CID (remember Dr. Salunkhe?) were among your favorites, here is one chance to use your skills of deduction.Forensic odontology is a highly specialized branch that deals with the identification of dead victims through their dental tissues. Teeth, like bones, can survive environmental factors and stay intact even after years.Though this is still in its infancy in India, I believe that the scope for anything exists where you wish to create it. Short term programs are available in select institutes in India, Indraprastha University and Gujarat Forensic Sciences University being among them.Writing and Content CreationEver heard the phrase 'Content is king?' If yes then you can understand the importance of quality content in the education of masses. Everything is on the internet these days, from answers to random questions to discussions on the complexities of the universe. There are funny videos and there are educational videos. If you love to create something new with words, images or videos, this niche might be the one for you.Healthcare companies are looking for knowledgeable content creators who love to create engaging content for the internet. My journey of writing began similarly.I was a content writer for a healthcare company and wrote several articles on health-related topics. Surprisingly, this was the very reason why my present boss hired me in her clinic in the first place.Study Abroad - Explore BeyondHaving graduated from a dental college in Punjab, I got first-hand experience of the general obsession with studying and settling abroad (preferably Canada, USA, and Australia).Almost a quarter of my batch mates went abroad and pursued further studies in dentistry or allied sciences. Each country has its own rules and regulations for foreign dentists wishing to practice there.Keep tabs on the latest updates in these countries and start preparing for language testing exams (IELTS, TOEFL), if any.Medical CodingOften heard but not fully understood, medical coding is a task where detailed medical data like diagnoses, medical services, equipment, etc. are converted into special alphanumeric codes. These codes are then used to aid the billing process, relevant in cases of health insurance. To code properly, the coder should have a sound knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and understand medical jargon. This field has high relevance in reputed IT companies. It pays well and is something worth trying if you are into it. Again, a short course in this field is desirable. Take a look hereDo a FellowshipThis is a useful addition to your clinical skills if you wish to see your practice grow over time. Several institutes today are offering workshops and fellowship programs in implantology, endodontics, periodontics, etc.Doing these will not only improve the scope of your clinical practice but aid in a more holistic understanding of oral health issues. But do have a detailed discussion about this with your peers, seniors and learn more about the course authenticity and accreditation before you invest time, energy and money into it.Clinical Dietitian - Health and Fitness are ForeverDo health and nutrition hold a special place in your lifestyle? Go for it! Many colleges offer courses in nutrition and dietetics right from certificate to a complete master's level degree. You have the clinical understanding of the human body, why not couple it up with the basics of healthy eating? With a staggering rise in lifestyle diseases over the years, the need for capable nutritionists has increased significantly. You can open up your wellness center, create diet plans for your clients or work as a clinical dietitian in attachment with good hospitals. Many people in hospice or critical care are largely dependent on an optimal diet for therapies to work. Why not explore your options? My best friend, a dentist and clinical dietitian herself, is doing a great job herself, something which resonates with her values. An MBA in Hospital Administration, Perhaps?Healthcare is a venture that will never incur a significant loss. Hospitals will keep on cropping up in different parts of the country to deliver quality healthcare as much as possible. But managing these huge hospitals is no easy feat. Your role as an administrator will help in bridging the gap between the medical professionals, patients, and hospitals in a smooth manner. There are premier institutions like the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences and IIHMR which provide quality education in the art of management. You can look up their official websites to understand their requirements, examinations, etc.Study Masters in Public Health, Serve the PeopleMaybe the lectures of Public Health Dentistry weren't of much interest to you in your college days. For most students, community dentistry/Public Health seems like a never-ending saga of mugging-up. In reality, it is the polar opposite.A degree in Public Health opens doors to making changes on both national and international platforms. It is a career where work can be rewarding and meaningful. You get to interact with people at the grass-root level and understand their grievances. You can aid in policymaking, research and understanding various health systems. Renowned organizations like the WHO, UNICEF, and philanthropic establishments lookout for promising public health professionals every day. This link can be useful for you.Join the Civil ServicesA path of struggle with great rewards, the life of a civil servant is nothing short of challenges. Dreaming of change is one thing, making it happen is another.Joining the civil services is one way of making a difference on a large scale. Indeed preparing for the civil services exams is not a piece of cake, but with the right attitude and preparation, who knows you will be living a life worthwhile.Keep a Lookout for Government PostsA very good chance of gaining good patient exposure and income. Several central and state government advertisements keep popping up from time to time regarding employment opportunities in associated hospitals. The only catch here is that the vacancies are few and the number of candidates for that post may be very high. Just prepare the best you can and go for it.Defense Services - Live a life less ordinaryDoes the uniform strike a chord with you? Is a life of adventure something you identify with? Then the Army Dental Corps has something for you. Each year, countless applicants apply for a spot in this organization to fulfill their dream of serving the people whilst donning the uniform. Life in the Army Dental Corps promises you the learning and the experience of a lifetime. You will go in as a dentist but will come out as a true officer. Presently, the Army Dental Corps factors in the marks scored in the NEET exam to get a seat in the interview round. So pull up your socks and get going!Other - For There is Always Room at the TopI have seen my batchmates doing some unconventional stuff too - some are singers, some have their fashion boutique, some are food health inspectors and some have their jewelry showroom! The possibilities are endless. This is, by no means an exhaustive list of the things you can or must do. You have to factor in a lot of things before making a decision. What resonates with you?Are you content with clinical practice or wish to try out something new? What are your priorities? Earning more money, gaining skills or seeking satisfaction? The success gradient for a dental professional is very different from that of other careers. It takes great patience to decide and go ahead with your dreams. You can learn, understand and experiment with your choices. That way you get an idea of your core strengths and abilities.Take care of one thing though, do not ever compare your peers' success with your journey. Someones 20 cannot be your 2. So be patient and keep going.Trust me, you will find a way because life always does.Keep Exploring!P.S. - These are the options I looked into when I was actively searching for alternate career options. I am not promoting any institutions on their behalf.
