Trump’s lawyer, Roy Cohn, was already famous as the lawyer for Senator Joseph McCarthy and was very capable of pulling strings. Trump was originally against the very concept of those abatements, until he could take advantage of them himself.For the projects with the City, Trump created his own companies, failed to disclose it to the City, and then used those companies to rip off the City. The Justice Department charged Trump with being in contempt for ignoring the decree, and that went on for years. Building superintendents were instructed to rent to white tenants but send black applicants to the central office. Fred Trump actively told agents to decrease the number of black tenants. Donald Trump’s reaction to the charges was that the suit was a “nationwide drive to force owners of moderate and luxury apartments to rent to welfare recipients.”By the time Trump ran for president, things had only gotten worse. He went from openly and blatantly discriminating against people in housing, and then denying it in government hearings, to saying that Mexicans are bringing drugs, bringing guns and were rapists. He then tried to sell himself as an outsider to politics and claimed that he’d drain the swamp, when it was the swamp that made him who he is today. As I expected, he took office, got rid of competent heads of government departments, and hired incompetent insiders to do his bidding, some of whom didn’t even have an idea of what the respective departments that they were chosen to run even did.I can’t say that Trump truly got worse because he already had a lifetime of experience as a corrupt immoral and racist individual. If I’ve changed my view on anything about him, it’s that he’s far less intelligent than I had imagined was possible.
