How do I crack JEE only with self study?

Frankly, I don’t have an advice for you. What I do have are my personal experience as student and as a teacher.I was enrolled in individual subject tuition in 11th standard and I was bunking them, except chemistry. I was also bunking school, going to movies - I watched more movies in a movie hall in my 11th than my entire life till 10th. I was going out with my friends to forts on the outskirts of Jaipur, I was sneaking out of my home at night. I made a new friend, I had my first beer, first smoke with the guy and no, he’s a great guy, unlike my parents’ opinion since they caught me drunk. Oh yes, they did, on my birthday, in 11th std. My parents, ah well, they made my life hell after that - changed my school, got me enrolled in Bansals Jaipur, took my phone - a feature phone (it was 2008), shifted me to a new colony near Bansals. So, the end result was - no school friends, no colony friends, no distractions, no activa(oh, my beloved), nothing!, just Bansals. In Bansals, I was enrolled in the program where 11th and 12th were completed in 1 year, but honestly, neither 11th nor 12th was done properly because in a class of 150, there simply wasn’t enough time for catering to each student’s doubts. I slept the first 2 days, post that the first month I barely managed to grasp anything plus the schedule was hectic - we used to have 6-7 hours of lectures each day and 8 hours on Sunday for exercise doubt solving. I was in a dummy school, so that helped. Then came the first test result and that was the turning point. You see, a physical coaching works because when you see people sitting next to you knowing a lot of shit and then, you compare them to yourself, you are no longer the overconfident, content school topper - then you know that you need to do a whole lot of effort because you want to be in the position of that person, where you know the right answer, where you are scoring, where you are a top student. We are all social animals, we mentally respond to the likes that society gives us whether it’s in the physical world or the digital one. If I enrolled you now in a school or batch where your class is full of cool people but your score is looked down upon and you are viewed and down valued as the nerd, that makes you feel bad and makes life difficult. You need to put yourself in a situation where you get constant appraisal for the efforts you are putting in. You should be going to your coaching teachers, informing them about your current levels and taking up one particular chapter as a goal. If you’re upto it, even take your test paper and inform the faculty which questions you did correct and which ones you didn’t. Provide your teacher with enough resources so he can propose the best solution to you, one that’s empirically tailored. On studying that one chapter, practising problems and going back to that teacher again with doubts you’ll be getting a vibe from that teacher which translates to “Good effort, keep going”, Studying further, improving on the chapter and going back to the teacher with more difficult problems will give you a verbal translation of “pat on the back, good going”. Post that, it’s about balancing your approach w.r.t. subjects, don’t hog down on any one subject, balance it.If you are part of a coaching, also focus on the chapter going on in your class. Improving on that will give you further appreciation in your batch when you’ll be able to solve or explain something. And don’t leave certain topics because you lack a certain conceptual knowledge that was covered earlier, which you missed or didn’t study/ practice/ remember, rather go to your teacher post lectures, ask and/or jot down the component concepts required for the particular chapter, especially the one that you’ll for the next lecture. Go study those concepts yourself and then, go back to your teacher, clear your doubts - he/she will appreciate if you have come after revising those concepts. If you want that teacher to motivate you, then you also want that teacher to be motivated enough to motivate you - you need to go to him having done some revision because you need him/her to do more than what is required of him/her as a job.In the very beginning, when you are just doing/improving on 2-3 chapters, don’t start calculating your speed and whether you’ll be able to do everything by the time JEE comes knocking. Learning is an inefficient process, don’t focus on speed in the beginning, focus on clarity and accuracy.Ask the whys in class, don’t accept science as fact, it’s not history. Usually when you ask successive whys, by the 5th or 6th why any concept can be broken down to a very simple concept, which you already know. As you’ll improve, you’ll get more productive, then you need to focus more on the chapters which scare you. Now, we never end up doing this, but try taking on the Big Daddy chapters, the ones that scare you, the ones that seem to be way beyond you scope. Get your teacher’s help, get peer help, get youtube help, solve questions, note down the questions that are bouncing in your head, make audio records of questions you are facing when studying the theory. Doing that will give you a great sense of accomplishment and motivate you for the other difficult chapters and the easy chapsies.Your parents want you to clear IIT, you know that your relatives and neighbours will value you if you clear IIT, your social standing will improve a lot, but you don’t know exactly why you want to do IIT, you love engineering? May be, but do you know what engineering is? Do you know the boring part of engineering apart from the amazing/interesting part that attracts you. No, obvi you don’t. And how will you, you haven’t gone through that process. And if your parents are not from engineering background, they don’t either. Since 6th standard you and your parents have been programmed by those around you to go for IITs, they hear about the placements, the success stories, Sharma ji ke bete ka IIT me ho gaya, and all that shit. In the end, we are all social animals, we respond and react according to the environment around us. But really you should be interested in going to IIT if you value your mental growth. You should be interested in going to IIT because going to anywhere else will be placing you in an environment where you might be the most intelligent and/or smart(both are not the same) and that stagnates your mental growth. Also, you should be going to IIT, because going anywhere else might make your intelligence less valued and you’ll be trying to be cool to either fit-in and/or improve your social standing in college. Some say Fear is the best motivator, so to get motivated for IIT JEE, start fearing not getting into IIT.—In the end, Work Hard, Take little steps, Surround yourself with an environment that values your efforts and progress, Seek advice and feedback and Structure your approach. The last part is the most important one - you want to be an engineer, right, that is what any engineer does. He/She takes a big problem, breaks it down into multiple small problems, tries multiple solutions/approaches and opts for the one that is best for the objective.Good Luck, Hope this helped. Make sure you are constantly writing tests and getting better each time. Attempt as many tests as you can under a time limit and surely you'll crack the JEE easily.4. Don't get distractedI was a dropper and I did self study. I was really good during the first 5 months. But somewhere in between I lost track and slightly went distracted, and BAM! -- I didn't crack the JEE. If I had prepared my timetables and schedules as I did in the first few months, I'd have been an IITian now. So don't ignore this point. It is very easy to get distracted. Even a slight distraction can throw you off-track.I hope you'll crack the JEE successfully. Your final result is a comparative rank against long term planners, who have been preparing months, if not years. Only a concentrated, industrious, and planned study plan will yield the desired score and rank. After studying IIT JEE and AIEEE question paper patterns, I have observed an abundance of numerical problems. In all the three subjects—physics, chemistry, and mathematics—a candidate is most likely to scale the cut-off if he/she is adept at solving numerical problems.Focus on improving your problem-solving speed, which requires continuous practice. Drill yourself with regular numerical problem practice. By the time you go for the actual exam, you will have developed a knack for recognizing the type of problem at once, just by looking at it.Ten Tips to Focus on Your Study PlanTipNote1. Solve at least 40-80 numerical problems daily.Including physics, chemistry and, mathematics.2. Set time limits for questions.Practice to improve speed on problem-solving.3. Start with the difficult areas first.Keep notes on the hardest sections and work your way to the easier material.4. Prioritize by topic.Develop your strategy to prioritize your subjects in accordance to your requirements..5. Analyze your mistakes.Find the points that you often face difficulty with and which slow you down.6. Never quit until you have achieved daily target.Once you have solved your daily problems, make tomorrow's plan.7. Practice logical thinking.Build your solutions step-by-step with contextual thinking. Discard stray thoughts.8. Until the exam ends, don't give up.Keep up your routine and resolve to keep trying.9. Use your board exam syllabus.Material from the board exams will be included on both JEE Main and JEE Advanced.10. If you are a bright student, (doesn’t necessarily mean you get very good grades in school) you can self-study for an exam like JEE.Let’s look at some of the pros of self-study:You have enough time for self-study.You will save a hell lot of time by not having to commute to and fro from the coaching center.e-Books and coaching materials are readily available online. There are a hell lot webinars, podcasts, social media platforms and websites to help you whenever you have a query. Technology enables you to connect. You can schedule your timetable as such that you have ample time to take mock tests and solve previous year’s papers.Since JEE is slowly moving towards being completely online, so if you prepare for it completely online, you will have an added advantage. You will save a lot of money viz a viz coaching fees. You can actually buy a car with that money. You won’t have coaching friends distracting you. The con side of this is you will be missing out on advantages of group discussions. How to go about it:Clear your concepts in school. There are various sites where you can do concept-based learning if you are not happy with the teachings of your school. Ingrain the concepts to your DNA.Revise concepts on a daily basis. You can solve your doubts and queries with just a click of picture and be a part of a community which would help you to have better discussions and get more exam related tips for performing better for your exams.PHYSICSPhysics requires you to have a strong hold on concepts. Once the concepts have been mastered, they are very easy to retain. Some chapters for JEE in physics have a heavy weightage in the exams. Here's the priority sequence you can follow chapter-wise.MechanicsMechanics is probably the most important topic any engineer should know. This invariably makes it the most important part of the paper. Indeed, the bulk of questions in JEE are either directly mechanics questions or require you to have considerable skill to solve compound problems.Rotational Mechanics is the most important topic in mechanics. But in order to master that the student needs to have considerable expertise with the previous chapters.Any JEE level mechanics problem can be solved by a combination of one or more of these:· Newton’s laws· Work energy theorem· Law of conservation of energy· Law of conservation of momentum (linear/angular)· Equation of continuity· Bernoulli’s theoremThese are probably the most important chapters for JEE and have applications in other chapters for JEE Physics too. Also, do not ignore the chapter on elasticity.Electricity and magnetismThis is another big section of JEE and one of the most important chapters for JEE. A lot of questions are asked from the applications of Coulomb's law and Capacitance. Stick to the JEE syllabus because this topic is diverse. Don't be scared of complex circuits and try to use the fundamentals to reduce complicated circuits to simpler ones. Use Kirchhoff's laws, series-parallel reduction, and such tricks. Do not ignore the theoretical aspects of the topic. There are quite a large number of standard formulae in electrostatics and magnetostatics. Make sure to remember them all (with directions involved) because you won't have enough time to derive standard results on D-day. Motional EMF is also one of the most asked topics and should be among the top priority chapters for JEE, so ensure that you practice ample of questions from it.Thermal physicsThis chapter covers a big chunk of the paper too. Since the topics are diverse, don’t be surprised to see a question, which is a mix of calorimetry with the laws of thermodynamics. Familiarize yourself with calculations of work, internal energy and heat in various processes.Fluids and waves and soundA lot of questions are asked from waves and sound; the most common ones are from Doppler Effect. Practice sample questions from fluid mechanics as well.Potentiometer-related experimentsJEE contains questions involving error analysis pertaining to potentiometer-related experiments, so make sure to understand them.OpticsThis chapter isn’t as difficult as it seems; it is indeed it is one of the easiest topics for JEE. Practice many questions, and you’ll be able to master it. Do not ignore Huygens’s principles.Modern physicsIt is mostly theoretical; in this, the focus should be on understanding the nuances of Bohr’s model. The common formulae should be memorized.CHEMISTRYOne must understand that it’s very important to read as much as possible in order to learn chemistry. Also, revision is crucial as there’s a possibility of forgetting things. Take chemistry as seriously as mathematics and physics. Do not ignore this subject just because you feel chemistry is purely “cramming.”Weightage is nearly equally distributed in the three streams of chemistry. It is important not to skip any topic from Inorganic Chemistry as the subject is highly scoring.Physical ChemistryChemical Equilibrium and Ionic Equilibrium are the most important topics in Physical Chemistry but in order to master that you need to have an excellent expertise in Mole Concept and Volumetric Analysis.Mole Concept:The most important and central concept in physical chemistry is the mole concept, which lies at the heart of the subject. Hence, it is indeed one of the most important and basic chapters for JEE chemistry. You should read this chapter thoroughly to gain a firm command over the entire chemistry subject. It is also important to understand the application of mole concept to various types of reactions, especially redox reactions. Several questions of physical chemistry in competitive examinations like JEE Main and JEE Advanced can be solved easily if one is well-versed with the mole concept.Electrochemistry is also an important topicAtomic StructureThis is the only chapter whose contents do not seem to have a direct correlation to Mole Concept. Questions from Atomic Structure are regularly asked in JEE.Other topicsThe rest of physical chemistry is essentially derived from mole concept. Other concepts like Chemical Thermodynamics, Chemical Bonding, Chemical Kinetics, Gaseous, etc. have nearly equal weightage. So, they can be revised in any order, but remember that a few questions are guaranteed to come from this section. Student needs have a basic idea of Surface Chemistry and Nuclear Chemistry.Organic ChemistryNomenclature is the most basic concept in organic chemistry, it is essential that the student has an excellent mastery over it.General Organic Chemistry and Isomerism:The key to understanding the entire organic chemistry is being thorough with the general organic chemistry section – electrophiles, nucleophiles, types of reaction, acidity, basicity, etc. The remaining organic chemistry is just the application part.Named ReactionsA large part of organic chemistry consists of the standard "named" reactions and students are expected to know these reactions along with the mechanisms. It is always good to know the mechanism of a specific reaction so that you can solve a similar new problem. Solomon and Fryhle's Organic Chemistry is one of the best books for learning organic chemistry besides other available books.Organic Synthesis:The Student needs to gain mastery over reaction mechanics to proceed with organic chemistry as the mechanism is very important for the entire chemistry. This is the part of the organic chemistry where things don’t need to be mugged up and can be understood and analyzed as JEE usually twists the questions on the basis of analysis.Aldehydes and Ketones are very important chapters of Organic Chemistry. Major chunk is asked from this chapter.Another important aspect of organic chemistry is the portion of organic synthesis, which involves writing a sequence of steps to synthesize a given compound from a given set of reagents with as little effort as possible. Quite a few problems of organic chemistry in the competitive examinations are based on organic synthesis where the students are expected to identify the missing reagents/chemicals in a specific step of the synthesis. So, it becomes important to be clear with all the steps of mechanism in the reaction. Please do not miss out on Biomolecules as it is the simplest and very scoring.Inorganic ChemistryAll of Inorganic Chemistry is on equal footing. No chapter can be considered ‘Unimportant.’There are a large number of compounds, and you are expected to know about them (methods of preparation, chemical reactions, uses, etc.). So, it’s a good idea to not divert much from the syllabus. Many questions of inorganic chemistry are asked from p-block elements, and it becomes important to understand this chapter rather than just cramming it. A good knowledge of periodic table and the trends in the properties of atoms (ionization potential, atomic radius, electronegativity, electron affinity, the electrode potential) will help you to understand the reactions.MATHEMATICSFor mathematics, you need rigorous practice. The more problems you will solve, the better will be your speed and accuracy. The mathematics syllabus for JEE broadly consists of the following topics:· Trigonometry· Algebra· Differential Calculus· Integral Calculus· Coordinate Geometry· VectorsThe topics for preparation of Mathematics for JEE Main & Advanced should be chosen wisely in order to ensure that pre-requisites for each topic are met completely. Hence, even though the priority of differential and integral calculus is undoubtedly the highest among any other chapter, calculus needs to be done after trigonometry and algebra.CalculusCalculus includes chapters on functions, limits, continuity, differentiability, differentiation, application of derivatives, integration, definite integrals and differential equations. Each of the above topics is important, and the calculus section covers around a third of the paper. So, you must be well-versed with every standard formula and technique used in calculus.Co-ordinate GeometryThis topic is usually taught in high school as well, so students are already familiar with the basic concepts of the slope, the equation of a line, etc. Solving plenty of problems (subjective as well as objective) from geometry helps in scoring better in JEE.Vectors (and 3D Geometry)Having done the coordinate geometry portion, most of you will find the 3D geometry portion relatively hassle-free and do well in this section. It’s primarily easy-breezy because JEE contains numerous problems pertaining to vectors that require standard formulae as in the case of a parallelepiped, etc.AlgebraAlgebra questions in JEE are a bit hard, and most students struggle with the chapters on permutations and combinations and complex numbers. However, practice is the key. The chapter on complex numbers greatly depends on the coordinate geometry portion. At times, a hard question from complex numbers can be solved if one can smartly correlate it to a coordinate geometry problem.TrigonometryThe formulae of trigonometry appear everywhere in JEE Mathematics exam paper. Very few questions are purely based on trigonometry, but there are always questions that involve standard trigonometric identities. What are some tips to write a blog post that converts?

You write a blog post, hit that publish button, and then… no one reads it.The problem isn’t necessarily your writing. It doesn’t mean that people don’t like you. It just means that your content likely isn’t optimized to be found. So in this post, I’m going to show you how to write a blog post that drives consistent readers to your blog that you probably should be getting. What’s up bloggers?Today, I want to help you clear the confusion and turn that blank screen into an absolutely epic blog post thata.) people want to read andb.) attracts the target audience you want. Now, rather than focusing on subjective techniques like writing style, I’m going to show you how to build a consistent stream of readers with strategic topic selection and workflows. Let’s get to it.First, I want to give you an idea of what consistent readership looks like and what it definitely does not look like. In order to gain readers, you need to get traffic. They’re essentially the same thing. But the way you get traffic to your website will vary. For example, I’m sure you’ve seen multiple traffic source channels in your analytics platform like organic search, social, direct, and referral traffic. All of these people fall into different buckets in terms of how they discover and consume content on your website. You might also be using paid ads or email marketing to send readers to your posts. These are all great, but paid traffic is only good for as long as you’re willing to pay. The same goes for your email list. You blast out an email, then the traffic fades to nothing. Now, what about social? Same thing. You might get some nice spikes of traffic, but that will likely drop back to normalcy. These peaks, as Rand Fishkin calls them, are "spikes of hope." And if you’ve used any of these marketing strategies, then I’m sure you’ve experienced what comes after. The "flatline of nope." Organic traffic on the other hand can produce the opposite effect. Free, passive, and hopefully growing traffic that doesn’t fade over time. Now, I’m not telling you to stop sending emails to your list or reduce your PPC ad spend. What I want you to take away from these examples is that billions of people are searching for informational content. And if you have a blog, you should make its purpose to satisfy the needs of searchers and in return, get the traffic you deserve.Step 1, which is to come up with topics that are proven to generate traffic. The most common problem I see with new bloggers is that they write "me-centered" posts. Now, there’s nothing wrong with creating content about what you ate for breakfast. But it’s all about how you frame it. For example, if I had a recipe blog, how many people do you think would search for, "what did Manish eat for breakfast today?" No one! People go to Google for solutions to their problems. So as you generate topics to write about, you should focus on the reader, rather than yourself. Here’s an example: Rather than creating a post called, "My kids love these fluffy blueberry pancakes," go with a helpful approach like, "How to Make Fluffy Blueberry Pancakes That Your Kids Will Love." Now, this is just an educated guess based on what I think people would be searching for.But you can actually find how many people are searching for any keyword using Ahrefs’ Keywords Explorer. Let’s run a search for our main topic, "blueberry pancakes." Next, I’ll go to the Phrase match report to find keyword ideas on this topic. Right away, you’ll see some great keyword ideas like "blueberry pancakes recipes," "how to make blueberry pancakes," and "vegan blueberry pancakes" along with keyword metrics like search volume beside them. Now, the thing with search volume is that it can be a bit misleading. For example, "how to make blueberry pancakes" gets 1,000 monthly searches in the US alone. Now, if we click on the SERP button, and look at the traffic column for the top ranking pages, you’ll see that these pages get significantly more traffic than the estimated search volume. And this often happens because these pages are ranking for hundreds or even thousands of keywords. Now, if we look at the SERP for the keyword, "vegan blueberry pancakes," you’ll see the opposite effect. Top ranking pages only get around 27% traffic compared to the main keyword’s search volume. This is why it’s critical to look at the total traffic potential of a topic so you can get the most bang for your buck. Now, this is just one topic you might want to write about. You can generate a whole list of content ideas by entering a more generic topic related to your niche. So let’s change this to "recipes." And just like that, you have a list of over 2.4 million keywords that contain the word "recipes." Let’s narrow this down to some low-competition topics with high search volume.I’ll set the Keyword Difficulty filter to show keywords that have a maximum score of something low like 10. And then I’ll set the Search Volume filter for keywords that have at least 1,000 monthly searches in Google. From here, it’s just a matter of clicking on the SERP button and analyzing traffic potential of each topic that might be worth creating a post on.Another thing you can do is find topics that are generating traffic for your competitors and then create content around those topics too. So since I have a recipe blog, I’ll go to Ahrefs’ Site Explorer and enter in one of my competitor’s domains. And it looks like they get around 874,000 search visitors per month! Next, I’ll go to the Top pages report, to find out which pages are generating the most search traffic for them. So looking at this report, I can immediately see that chocolate chip cookies, lo mein, and cooking tofu, might be good topics to write blog posts about. And as you can see, finding topics that people care to search for isn’t hard. Just make sure you check the total traffic potential behind the topic, so you don’t waste time writing content that people don’t care to read. Let’s move on to Step 2, which is super important and that’s to assess search intent. Search intent represents the reason behind a searcher’s query. For example, if someone searches for "how to make pancakes," what do you think they want to see? Probably recipes, right? But what about if someone searches for the query "slow cooker?" What are they looking for? Do they want to buy one? Read reviews? See a list of recipes or something entirely different? The good news is that search intent is really easy to identify. All you have to do is search for the keyword phrase you want to rank for in Google and the search results will reveal what I like to call, "the 3 C’s of search intent." The first C is content type. This can usually be categorized into blog posts, product pages, category pages, and landing pages.Looking at the top 10 results for "how to make pancakes," you can tell just from the titles that they’re all blog posts. The second C is content format. When it comes to blog posts, a few common formats would be "how-to" guides, step-by-step tutorials, list posts, or opinion editorials. There are a lot of different formats, but this should give you an idea of what you should be on the lookout for. So for our example, "how-tos" are the dominant format. The final C is content angle. The angle is often depicted in the title as the "benefit" as to why someone should click and read their article. So this page is talking about creating "perfect" pancakes, this one is pushing the "easy pancakes" angle, and this one down here is about "fluffy pancakes." Generally speaking, you don’t want to stray too far from the angle that the top 10 results are taking, but note that angles will vary from topic to topic. Now, just to show you how important this step is, let’s type "slow cooker," into Google. Immediately, you’ll see that the search results are dominated by Ecommerce category pages. If you don’t have a similar page on your site, you probably shouldn’t target the keyword, because your chances of ranking will be slim to none.We have a full tutorial on doing keyword research, assessing search intent, and also knowing how hard it will be to rank on Google, so I highly recommend watching that tutorial which I’ll link up. For now, let’s move on to Step 3, which is to write a data-driven outline. A data-driven outline might sound strange, but hear me out.A page doesn’t rank for just one keyword. In fact, our data shows that on average, the #1 ranking page also ranks for nearly a thousand other keywords. So when you’re creating your outline, it’ll pay to know which keywords the top ranking pages are ranking for so you can get the most mileage out of your blog posts. To do this, go to Keywords Explorer and search for the target keyword you want to rank for. Then scroll to the bottom of the page, where you’ll see the top 10 ranking pages along with their SEO metrics. And as expected, a bunch of these pages are ranking for thousands of keywords. To see the keywords that this page ranks for, let’s click on the number in the corresponding row, which will open up the Organic Keywords report in Site Explorer. Now, to keep these keywords relevant, let’s set a filter to only show keywords that rank in position 1 through 10. This will weed out a lot of irrelevant keywords that we don’t need to target. A few interesting words that pop out to me are "from scratch," "recipe," and "batter." Now, rather than trying to stuff these keywords into your post, it’s best to think of these as subtopics. You can also use them to solidify the angle you want to take for your post. So I may take the angle of creating homemade pancakes from scratch. As for the subtopics, I would likely have a section on "making the batter." And under the subheadings, I may include descriptive words people are searching for like "delicious and fluffy." And I may even include a substitute to make the batter without milk. Finally, just add some bullet points below each of the subheadings to ensure that you stay on topic once you get to writing the draft. Speaking of which, let’s move on to Step 4 and that’s to write your first draft. Now, the purpose of this step isn’t to write a perfect blog post that everyone's going to love. It’s to get your thoughts on screen and into full sentences. If you’ve created a detailed outline, it’s just a matter of looking at your bullet points and making them flow together. These are two tricks that I use that work particularly well for me. First is the Pomodoro technique. In short, you set a 25-minute timer and a goal you want to achieve in that time. For example, my average typing speed is around 115 words per minute. But since blogging requires more critical thinking than a typing test, I’ll set my goal to 20% efficiency. So this translates into around 575 words every 25 minutes. Now, the key to succeed using the Pomodoro Technique when writing blog posts is to not hit the back button because of spelling mistakes or to reword your sentence 15 times before you find the perfect phrasing. After your first 25-minutes are up, take a 3-5 minute break and rinse and repeat until complete. This step is all about efficiency and you don’t want to do anything that would stop you from reaching that goal. In the next step, you need to edit your draft. From my experience, it’s best to take time away from your piece before editing it. There are usually two parts to this.First is to fix spelling and grammatical issues. This is pretty straightforward and tools like Grammarly can help ease the process. The second part is to make sure that your blog post flows and provides value to readers. Common blogging advice is to "write as you speak," so reading your post out loud as you edit can definitely give some perspective. If you find that it sounds unnatural, robotic or whatever, then make edits where needed. Remove anything that’s fluffy, or add in bits and pieces to provide additional clarity or evidence. One last tool I recommend is Hemingway Editor. Just paste your post in there and it’ll give you a readability grade. A general rule of thumb is to aim for sixth grade level readability. This will ensure that your blog posts are easy to read and understand. Now step 6 is my favorite part of writing blog posts and that’s to get honest feedback. In my opinion, this is one of the most critical steps in our content creation process. And it’s what allows us to consistently get positive feedback from various online communities. Here’s how we do it at My company. Rahul, our resident blog master, is responsible to ensure that every post that goes live on our blog is absolutely epic. But epic is subjective. So for each post that he writes, my job is to provide feedback, question any claims, and offer suggestions where relevant. Now, my job is to create videos that are always providing value to you, our viewers. So Rahul will review and provide feedback just as I do for his blog posts. And to add an extra layer of quality control, we loop in Sameer and Vishal to make sure that everything we publish is top notch. I cannot recommend this step enough.Ask your colleagues, friends, or whoever to review your content, so your team can consistently produce your best stuff. The last and final step is to create your final draft. By this point all feedback should have been given. It’s now your job to take that feedback and make decisions on what goes in the final version and what’s not. Go through each touch point, and once all points have been resolved, you just need to do one final read through. Then upload, publish, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. Now, if you enjoyed this post, make sure to like, share and if you have any questions about the writing process, leave a comment below, and I’d love to help. So keep grinding away,.

A Simple (But Effective) 31-Point SEO ChecklistContentsAre you looking for a complete SEO checklist to help drive more traffic to your website? The 31 points below are based on the principles we believe in here at Ahrefs. And our blog traffic has grown significantly over the past 12 months.Organic traffic growth for the Ahrefs blog over the past 12 monthsHow to use this SEO checklistThink of this checklist like a shopping list of ingredients for a delicious chocolate cake. You need all the ingredients to make a perfect cake. But some are more important than others.Forget the chocolate, and your cake won’t be very chocolatey. Forget the optional drizzle of vanilla extract on the other hand and your cake will likely still taste pretty darn good. What I’m saying is this:You don’t need to implement everything on this checklist. Just follow the key advice from each subsection and do your best. That will often be more than enough to outrank the competition.Got it? Let’s go.Basic SEO ChecklistLet’s begin with the SEO best practices that you should employ before doing anything else.Note that these things are unlikely to have a direct effect on rankings. They’re just the basics that every website owner should have in the bag.1. Install Yoast SEO (or a similar SEO plugin)Yoast SEO is a free SEO plugin for WordPress and a few other CMS’ .Functionality-wise, it does a lot—create sitemaps, optimize metadata, apply “noindex” attributes to specific areas of your site, and much more.In other words, it makes the daunting technical stuff less daunting.Sidenote.All in One SEO Pack and The SEO Framework are other popular Yoast alternatives for WordPress. If you’re not using WordPress or any of the other CMS’ supported by Yoast, then head over to Google and look for the “best SEO plugin for [your CMS].”2. Create a sitemapSitemaps tell search engines where to find the important content on your site (which they can then crawl and index ).Here’s what they look like:You can usually find yours at 404 Not Found. How do you create one? If you’re a WordPress user, use Yoast . Otherwise, there are many sitemap generators around—Google it!3. Create and add a robots.txt file to your siteRobots.txt is a plain text file that instructs search engines where they can and can’t go on your site. It will look something like this:You can see that this particular robots.txt file includes a link to the sitemap (which tells search engines where to find it) followed by some directives instructing search engines not to crawl or index any web pages with “/billing/” in the URL.WordPress users can use Yoast to create and optimize their robots.txt file. This robots.txt generator works well for non-Wordpress users.Read this guide to learn everything you need to know about robots.txt.PRO TIPCheck to see if you already have a robots.txt file on your site by navigating to 404 Not Found.4. Install Google AnalyticsYou can use Ahrefs’ SEO Toolbar to add all of that data to the search results, like so:Found a challenging keyword? Consider pursuing an easier keyword/topic instead. You should always target keywords within your wheelhouse.On-Page SEO ChecklistYour next job is to optimize the actual content on your page—i.e., on-page SEO .Let’s do it!Sidenote.Keep in mind that this is a correlation study. Correlation ≠ causation. But don’t sacrifice descriptiveness for length. Your URLs should offer some insight into what the user should expect when they click through to the page.Example: 44 Best Free SEO Tools (Tried & Tested)This URL makes it clear what to expect from this page—i.e., a list of free SEO tools .Here’s another benefit of using descriptive URLs: They tend to include your target keyword.2. Write a compelling title tag and descriptionMost people tell you to add your target keyword to your title tag and meta description .Is that bad advice? Not at all. It’s good practice. But don’t sweat it if it doesn’t make sense to do so.Most of the pages ranking on the front page of Google don’t have an exact-match keyword in their title tag. That’s according to our 2016 case study of 2M keywords. The same is true for meta descriptions.Your primary goal shouldn’t be to shoehorn keywords into such places. Instead, work to craft an enticing title and description that will increase CTR and bring more traffic to your website.3. Use one H1 on your page (and include your keyword in it)Google recently stated that it’s okay to use as many H1 tags on your page as you want.As many as you want. But we think it’s still good practice to use just one. That’s because H1’s are typically used as a wrapper for the title of the page—and a page can surely only have one title. But what about keywords? Should you include your target keyword in there?According to our 2016 study of 2M keywords, ~85% of top-ranking pages don’t have their keyword in the H1 tag.Still, there are two important reasons to include your keyword here:Scannability. Having your keyword in the H1 helps to reinforce that the visitor is in the right place. It makes it clear that your content tackles the topic they likely Googled before arriving on your page.Link framing. People will often link to your page using the title. Including your keyword in the H1 will increase your chance of receiving links with your target keyword in the anchor text.If you want to quickly check whether there are any pages on your site with multiple H1’s, you can do so with Ahrefs’ Site Audit .4. Link to relevant internal and external resourcesWeb pages that link out to high-DR resources rank higher than those that don’t.IMPORTANT: That is the result of a correlation study. It doesn’t imply causation. You should, therefore, not be afraid to link out to other web pages. Just make sure you link to high-quality, relevant stuff.Internal links are also important.Whenever you publish something new, make an effort to add internal links from relevant places on existing pages. How do you find such pages? Google site:yourdomain.com + “topic”For example, if we wanted to find relevant places on Ahrefs - SEO Tools & Resources To Grow Your Search Traffic from which to link to this article, we could do so by Googling site:ahrefs.com/blog + “SEO checklist”5. Optimize your images with descriptive “alt” tags70% of top-ranking pages don’t have their target keywords in any of their image alt tags.50% don’t even have their alt tags filled in.So alt tags aren’t particularly important then, right? Not so fast. Remember that the purpose of alt tags is to offer some context to the reader should the image fail to load (or if the visitor is using a screen reader). For that reason, you should make sure alt tags are descriptive—this will often result in the natural inclusion of your target keywords.Alt text is also helpful for ranking in Google Images.Alt text is extremely helpful for Google Images — if you want your images to rank there. Even if you use lazy-loading, you know which image will be loaded, so get that information in there as early as possible & test what it renders as.How important is Google Images?According to Google Search Console, we’ve had over 2 million impressions and 1.57K clicks to our site from Google Images in the past three months.Being as adding alt text only takes a few seconds, it’s well worth doing.6. Intelligently “sprinkle” long-tail variations throughout your contentDid you know that the average top-ranking page also ranks for almost ~1K other keywords ?This means that most of the time, the bulk of your traffic won’t come from your primary target keyword—it’ll come from long-tail variations. It’s for that reason that it’s important to optimize for long-tail variations too.Doing this is easy. Sprinkle them throughout your content wherever they make sense. Just don’t overdo it or shoehorn keywords where they don’t belong—the readability of your content should always take priority.7. Add schema markup to enhance SERP visibility (where relevant)Schema markup helps search engines to better understand your content. But it can also dramatically affect how your page is displayed in the SERPs.Here’s a page with schema markup that currently ranks for “pizza dough recipe:”Here’s what it would look without schema markup:Do you see the difference?Schema markup can increase click-through rates and bring more traffic to your website. It’s not that technical to implement either. Use Google’s markup helper or this Schema markup generator to do it with ease.Content ChecklistPicking a topic with high search traffic potential and doing some basic on-page SEO is important, but all your efforts will be in vain if your content isn’t up to scratch.Follow these quick tips to level-up your content.1. Write a kick-ass introFail to convince readers that your page offers what they want within a few seconds and they’ll hit that back button faster than you can say “ dwell time .”This is known as “pogo-sticking.”Your best defense against this is a compelling intro.Good introductions should do three things:Resonate with the reader;Promise a solution to the user’s problem. But is “pogo-sticking” even a Google ranking factor? We try not to use signals like that [pogo-sticking] when it comes to search.Interesting. But even if it’s not a direct ranking factor, there’s one other reason that a compelling intro is still important for SEO:Nobody is going to link to your content without reading it in the first place. So, to attract links—which many studies have found to correlate heavily with rankings and traffic over the years, including our own —the reader first has to be engaged enough to read your content. That’s why your introduction is arguably the most critical part of your page.2. Focus on readabilityNobody wants to read a big wall of text. That’s why you should always break up your content with subheadings, images, quotes, etc.—anything that will keep the reader glued to the page.3. Use short sentences and paragraphs50% of the US population read below an 8th-grade reading level .So unless you want to alienate half of the population, don’t overcomplicate things. That means using short sentences and paragraphs. Also:Avoid unnecessary jargon;Use simple words instead of complex ones;Remove excruciatingly unnecessary adverbs.Hemingway is a free, browser-based tool that will help simplify your writing. It tells you the current grade level of your copy and suggests improvements.4. Create the best piece of content on the topicHow do you create the best content on a given subject when it’s so subjective?Answer: E‑A-T.Confused? E‑A-T stands for Expertise/Authoritativeness/Trustworthiness. That is what Google claims to be looking at in their official search quality evaluator guidelines .Technical SEO ChecklistIt’s not uncommon for technical SEO issues to hold a website back from ranking as high as it deserves. The problem: Most people think technical SEO is daunting and complicated. The good news: It doesn’t have to be.You can learn how to do a full SEO audit in this post (or in the video below). However, as this post isn’t solely focussed on technical SEO, what follows are a few common and easily solvable technical SEO issues.1. Identify (and FIX) any crawl errorsCrawl errors mean that Google is having trouble viewing the content on your site.If they can’t view it, they won’t rank it. It’s as simple as that. That’s why you should fix such issues as soon as possible. You can find crawl errors in Google Search Console > Coverage.Sidenote.If you’re using the old version of Google Search Console, you can find crawl errors in Google Search Console > Crawl > Crawl stats. You can also find crawl errors (e.g., web pages and images blocked by robots.txt) using Ahrefs’ Site Audit .2. Make sure your site loads FASTPage speed is the talk of the town in the SEO world right now.But our 2016 data only shows a small correlation between fast-loading pages and higher rankings. However, regardless of what the data says, you should still make sure that your site loads fast. Why? Because it’s damn frustrating to click on a search result and have to wait for ages for it to load. So frustrating, in fact, that most people don’t do it . They just hit the back button and click a different result. You can use GTMetrix to see how fast your web page loads.Page speed can be complicated. So as a general rule, I would aim to keep the Fully Loaded Time below 3 seconds. (You can see that we have work to do ourselves!)You can find all pages on your site where this isn’t the case using Ahrefs’ Site Audit .Site Audit > Data Explorer > Loading time (ms) > 30003. Fix outbound broken linksAccording to our 2016 study, ~2% of pages that rank in the top 10 have broken links.Does this mean that the presence of broken links on a page is a ranking factor? Not exactly. But the fact remains: broken links are bad for user experience. And user experience is something that Google cares deeply about—that’s why they adjusted their algorithm to go after sites with too many distracting ads a few years ago.Furthermore, broken internal links waste “link juice,” which can have a direct adverse effect on rankings.Learn how to find and fix broken links in our full guide .4. Make sure your site is mobile-friendlyMost searches take place on mobile devices as opposed to desktops. So having a mobile-friendly website is more important than ever.Check whether or not your site needs work with Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test tool.Fix any issues with mobile-friendliness as a priority.5. Switch to HTTPsHTTPs is a ranking factor. Google said so .However, 80% of top-ranking sites are still not secure (according to our data). But that study was conducted in 2016, so I’d urge you to take it with a pinch of salt.More and more sites are switching to HTTPs, and so should you.Potential ranking boosts aside, HTTPs will protect your visitors’ data. This is especially important if you have any contact forms on your site. If you’re asking for passwords or payment information, then it’s not just important, it’s an absolute must.Sidenote.You can get a free SSL certification from Lets Encrypt6. Fix duplicate content issuesDuplicate content occurs when you have two or more similar or identical pages on your website. This can cause problems as Google may not know which of the pages, if any, should rank. It’s a common ecommerce SEO issue thanks to faceted navigation. That alone can cause hundreds of duplicate content issues because of URL parameters. You can find duplicate content issues with A hrefs’ Site Audit .Run a crawl and go to Content Quality > Duplicate pages without canonicalFix these by canonicalizing the affected pages to a “master” page.Learn more about duplicate content issues for ecommerce sites and how to solve them in this video (or this blog post )Link Building ChecklistLink building is perhaps the most challenging SEO task. That’s because not everything is within your control. You’re often reliant on other people giving you links as a result of your outreach efforts. So here are a few tried and tested link building tactics you can use:1. Replicate your competitor’s linksYour competitors’ likely have at least some backlinks.Believe it or not, that’s a good thing. If a website is linking to your competitor, chances are it’d make sense for them to link to you too. Conclusion: You can build links to your site by replicating your competitors’ links .How? There are many different ways. However, one quick win is to find sites that are linking to multiple competitors as the chance of them also linking to you is high. You can do that with Ahrefs’ Link Intersect tool . Just enter a few of your competitors like so…… then hit “Show link opportunities.”Look for links that may be easy to replicate, such as those from guest posts , link roundups, forums, directories, etc.2. Monitor and reclaim any lost linksDiamonds are forever. Links aren’t.Links disappear like this for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes they’re gone for good. Other times it’s possible to reclaim them. What are the easiest ones to reclaim?Links marked as “link removed” in Ahrefs. These are links that the author decided to remove from their page.So your job is to figure out why that was and give them a compelling reason to reinstate the link (or a link to another relevant resource).3. Pursue unlinked mentionsPeople will sometimes mention your brand—or things related to your brand—without linking back to you. These are known as unlinked mentions .Now, wouldn’t it be cool if you could convert unlinked mentions for your brand to linked mentions? It would, and you can. Just reach out to the authors and request that they “make the text clickable.” Because they’re already familiar with your brand, there’s a high chance that they’ll happily make that change for you. However, the question remains: How do you find unlinked brand mentions in the first place?Learn how to do that in our full guide to unlinked mentions.4. Let the right people know about your contentPeople can’t link to content if they don’t know it exists. That’s why you should make a conscious effort to tell people—the right people—about your content. But who are the “right” people? They have two attributes:They are likely to be interested in your content; They have the power to link to you. These people are often nicknamed the “linkerati.”You can let them know about your content by performing blogger outreach .Does it work? Yes, it does. We do it all the time.Source: A Simple (But Effective) 31-Point SEO ChecklistThe Complete SEO Checklist For 2020This is the most complete SEO checklist on the internet.Everything on this list is working GREAT right now.So if you want higher Google rankings in 2020, you’ll love today’s checklist. How To Use This SEO ChecklistThe more tips you put into practice, the more traffic you’ll get.SEO Basics ChecklistFirst, let’s tackle the SEO fundamentals. Front-Load Your Keyword In Your Title TagIt’s no secret that you should use your keyword in your title tag .But not as many people know that WHERE you put your keyword matters.4. Embed Title Tag ModifiersTitle Tag Modifiers are words and phrases to add to your title tag. When you do, your page will rank for lots of long tail keywords.5. Use Your Keyword Once In The First 150 WordsGoogle puts more weight on the first 100-150 words of your page.6. Use Your Keyword in H1, H2 or H3 TagsMake sure to include your keyword in H1, H2 or H3 tags. For example:You might have noticed that I included the term “SEO Checklist” in the first subheader on this page:Well, that subheader is wrapped in an H2 tag. And including “SEO Checklist” in an H2 can help me rank higher for that keyword. But when it comes to search engine optimization, every little bit helps.7. Optimize ImagesUnfortunately, Google is really bad at reading images. So to help them understand your images, you want to optimize your image alt tags and filenames.(As a bonus: optimized images also helps you rank in image search)Here’s how:First, when you save the image, use a filename that briefly describes what that image is.For example, let’s say you just took a picture of a spinach omelette with your iPhone.Well, you’d want to name that image something like:spinach_omelette.pngThen, when you add the image to your page, give it a descriptive alt tag.I like to use lots of alt text so Google can fully understand what my image is:8. Use Synonyms and LSI KeywordsSo instead of using the same keyword 1000 times, use synonyms and LSI keywords .Well, you’d want to mention that exact keyword a few times on your page… and synonyms like:How to launch a blogStarting a blogHow to create a blogHow to setup a blog on WordPressYou get the idea 🙂Next, add some LSI Keywords .LSI Keywords are terms that go along with your main keyword. You can find a bunch of these using LSIGraph: LSI Keyword Generator .Then, just add a few of these LSI keywords to your page. And you’re set.9. Use External LinksMake sure to link out to 5-8 authority sites in your article. For example, in this list of SEO techniques , I link to trusted websites like Wikipedia and Google. And those links show Google that my content is well-referenced and trustworthy.10. Use Internal LinksThis is super simple:Pro Tip: Use keyword-rich anchor text in your internal links .For example, note how I use the anchor text “on-page SEO”, in this internal link:This tells search engines that the page I’m linking to is about: “on-page SEO”.Technical SEO ChecklistTechnical SEO can make or break your rankings. Fortunately, fixing technical SEO problems isn’t that hard… especially if you follow the items on this checklist.1. Identify Crawl ErrorsA “ Crawl Error ” means that Google has trouble viewing a page on your site. And if they can’t view your page, it’s not gonna rank for anything. You can easily find Crawl Errors in the Google Search Console’s “Coverage” report:If you notice Google is having trouble accessing one of your important web pages (for example, robots.txt is blocking search engine spiders), you’ll want to get that fixed ASAP.2. Find Out How Google Views Your PageSometimes users can see everything on your page……but Google can’t.If Google can’t fully access your page, it won’t rank. That’s why I recommend using the Google Search Console’s “Inspect URL” feature.Just enter a page from your site at the top of the GSC.When you do, you’ll see your page from Google’s point of view:Very helpful.3. Make Sure Your Site is Mobile-FriendlyGoogle recently launched a new “ Mobile-First Index “.Which means:If your site isn’t mobile optimized , it’s not going to rank very well.Fortunately, you can easily see your site’s mobile friendliness with Google’s Mobile-Friendly Test .Just pop in a page from your site… and get a clear “yes or no” answer.Broken links can REALLY hurt your SEO.So you definitely want to find broken links… and fix them. The easiest way to do that? Broken Link Checker .It’s a free tool that scans your site for broken links:5. Secure Your Site With HTTPSSo if you haven’t already, it’s time to move your site to HTTPS.(Or if you just launched a new site, set it up with HTTPS on day 1)6. Check Your Site’s Loading SpeedDoes your site load insanely fast? That’s why you want to head over to PageSpeed Insights .This free tool lets you know how quickly your site loads for desktop and mobile users:It even lets you know what you can do to speed things up.Content ChecklistThere’s no denying it: if you want to rank in Google, you need to publish great content. That’s why content is now a BIG part of any modern-day SEO strategy. And in this section I’ll show you the exact steps to creating the type of content that ranks in 2020 (and beyond).1. Create Amazing Content Using “The Skyscraper Technique”The Skyscraper Technique is a powerful formula for publishing amazing content. In fact, I used this technique to double my search engine traffic:Here’s the 3-step process:First, identify a piece of popular content in your industryNext, create something even betterFinally, promote that contentContent that ranks best in Google tends to cover an entire topic in-depth.Instead, I created a guide that covered EVERYTHING about that topic. And that’s the main reason that it ranks in the top five in Google for my primary keyword:(And gets tons of shares on social media)4. Use Schema MarkupSchema markup helps search engines understand your content better. In fact, Google recently went on the record to say that Schema can help your rankings .That’s why I recommend Google’s Structured Data Testing tool .It makes using Schema MUCH easier than trying to do it manually.5. Focus on Content Formats That Are Working Right NowThe team at BuzzSumo recently reviewed 100 million articles .So, what did they find?First, the bad news:“The majority of content gets zero backlinks”.Ouch.Now, some good news:They discovered that certain content formats perform better than others.Specifically, “the big winners are sites that have built a strong reputation for original, authoritative content.”What do they mean by “original, authoritative” content?Content written by expertsFor example, I recently put together this giant list of SEO tools :6. Use MultimediaIndustry studies (like this one) show that using multimedia can help you rank in Google :For example, you might notice that this post contains LOTS of images.I do this for two main reasons:First, it just makes for better content.Second, images and other forms of multimedia help content rank better. So I recommend using these forms of multimedia in your content:ImagesWith that, it’s time to cover a SUPER important part of SEO: link building .Link Building ChecklistWhen it comes to SEO, link building is KEY. In fact, Google recently confirmed that backlinks are one of their “top 3” ranking signals . Unfortunately, building links isn’t easy (that’s why most other SEO checklists skip this step). But if you want to rank in Google, links are a must. And in this section I’ll show you how to do it.1. Build Powerful Backlinks With Guest PostingGuest posting is an AWESOME link building strategy. That said:There’s a right and wrong way to guest post.Right way: Publish your guest post on respected sites in your industry.Wrong way: Publish guest posts on any website that has a “write for us” page.In fact, I only guest post on sites that will send me targeted traffic. For example, I published this guest post on the Buffer blog:Not only did I get a great backlink from my guest post, but decent amount of traffic too:2. Reverse Your Competitor’s BacklinksWhy reinvent the wheel when you can copy your competitor’s link sources? To do this, you’ll need a link analysis tool.I personally use Ahrefs .But if you’re on a budget, you can use a freemium tool like Link Explorer (from Moz).No matter what tool you choose, the process is exactly the same:Grab your competitor’s URL.Pop it into the toolFinally, get as many of their links as you can3. Build Contextual Backlinks With Link RoundupsThis strategy works GREAT.That said, it comes with a catch.4. Become a Podcast GuestThis is similar to guest posting. But instead of contributing an article, you go on a podcast as a guest.5. Mention Influencers In Your Blog PostsThis process couldn’t be simpler:First, mention influential bloggers in your content. Then, let them know you mentioned them.(Seriously, that’s it)Bonus #1: Advanced SEO Tips and TacticsNow that you’ve got the basics down, let me walk you through a handful of advanced SEO tips and techniques.1. Optimize Your Site for Click-Through-RateThere’s no doubt about it:The more people click on your result, the higher you’ll rank .CTR is a user experience signal that Google is paying more and more attention to.2. Limit Website DowntimeIf your site goes down, users get mad.As it turns out, Google gets mad too.In fact, they state that unplanned site outages “ can negatively affect a site’s reputation .”Fortunately, you can easily track site downtime with a tool like Pingdom .If it’s down, you’ll get a notification so you can fix the problem ASAP.3. Delete “DeadWeight” PagesGoogle recently said that a huge site with tons of pages can be bad for SEO .To quote the Google rep (Gary Illyes):“Narrow it down as much as you can. Don’t create low quality and no value add pages. It’s just not worth it because one thing is that we don’t necessarily want to index those pages. We think that it’s a waste of resources. The other thing is that you just won’t get quality traffic. If you don’t get quality traffic then why are you burning resources on it?”This is why I make sure that every page on my site is AWESOME.It’s because I focus on 100% quality.Despite the fact that this quality over quantity approach clearly works, I see A LOT of sites struggle with “Dead Weight” pages.Dead Weight pages like:Thin content/boilerplate contentOld services pagesAnd as you just saw, Google said that these Dead Weight pages can hurt your SEO efforts. So I recommend deleting them.4. Improve Your Site’s Dwell TimeGoogle wants to see that people stay on your site.If people quickly bounce from your page and visit another search result, it tells Google:“People hate this page!”.But when people get what they want from your page, they’ll stick around. And Google will take notice:So:How can you keep people on your site longer? Here are a few simple tips that work really well:5. Update and Relaunch Outdated ContentDo you have old articles on your blog collecting dust?Bonus #2: Case Studies and ExamplesNow it’s time to show you the strategies from this checklist in action.Specifically, I’m going to show you how Sean at Get Proven's Complete Hiring Solution to easily manage all of your hiring needs. used a handful of the items on this checklist to increase his organic traffic by 88%.1. How Sean Improved His On-Page OptimizationSean’s site had A TON of pages. So it didn’t make sense to spend hours on each one. That’s why Sean focused on optimizing his 10 most important pages. Some of Sean’s most important pages were blog posts, like this:Others were service pages, like his homepage:But in general, Sean used the on-page SEO tips from this checklist on all 10 pages.Sean’s content was already well optimized. So it only needed to make a few tweaks. For example, let’s see how Sean improved his post on questions to ask references .First, Sean to add his target keyword (“questions to ask references”) in the first 100 words of his article:He also sprinkled LSI keywords (like “business references”) into his content:Now that Sean’s content was keyword-optimized, it was time to boost his click-through-rate.2. How Sean (Quickly) Improved His CTR By 64.1%Sean had a post on his blog called: 100+ Best Job Boards to Find Niche Talent. Here’s exactly what Sean did to improve this listing’s CTR:First, he looked at Adwords ads for keywords, like “job boards”:And he noticed that most listed a specific number of job boards in their ads:(Sean also noticed that NONE of them used the term, “niche talent”).So Sean changed his title tag to:“100+ Job Boards For Job Seekers and Recruiters”And his meta description tag to:“Find the best job boards on the web all in one place. See our list of 100+ boards right here.”Here’s what his Google result looks like now:Today, that page’s CTR is 4.88%……64.1% higher than before.3. How Sean Got Users to Spend More Time On His SiteIf people stick to your site like superglue, Google will give you a rankings boost. Here’s how Sean got people to spend more time on his site:First, Sean pushed his content above the fold. How?Well, Proven’s blog posts used to have a big gap between the site’s navigation and the post title:The top of your page is million-dollar real estate. That’s why you want to avoid unnecessary space that pushes your content below the fold.So he reduced that space by 50%.Proven’s blog also had breadcrumbs navigation .Breadcrumbs navigation is OK for an ecommerce site. But it’s not necessary for a blog.So Sean got rid of it.Proven’s blog posts also had massive images at the top of each post. These definitely looked cool……but they pushed Sean’s excellent content below the fold.So Sean made his post images significantly smaller:Next, Sean made his blog post introductions “sticky”.Your blog post introductions are HUGE.Because the truth is this:If you lose someone in your intro, you’ve lost them for good. But if you hook someone with a compelling introduction……they’re MUCH more likely to stick around. What did he change exactly?First, Sean cut out sentences that stated the obvious. He also formatted the content so that there were only 1-2 sentences per paragraph ( this improves your content’s readability ).These design and introduction improvements boosted Proven’s “Avg. Time On Page” by 12.2%:4. What Happened When Proven Deleted 10k Deadweight PagesProven had A LOT of dead weight pages on their site.In fact, they had 48,300 pages indexed in Google:Because Get Proven's Complete Hiring Solution to easily manage all of your hiring needs. is an online job board, they had a lot of old job listings hanging around:Not to mention profile pages for companies that hadn’t posted a job in months:Also, Proven’s search result pages were getting indexed……which was creating tons of duplicate content. So Sean quickly deleted or redirected Get Proven's Complete Hiring Solution to easily manage all of your hiring needs.’s DeadWeight pages. In total, Sean deleted or redirected over 10,000 pages. And this is one of the main reasons that their search traffic improved so quickly.5. How Sean Boosted Proven’s Page SpeedOur recent study of 1 million Google search results found a significant correlation between site speed and rankings:(Not to mention the fact that Google has said that they use page speed as a ranking signal ).So yes, site speed IS important for SEO.Here’s exactly how Proven sped things up:First, they ran their site through Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool :Then they tested their site’s loading speed with Website Speed and Performance Optimization .Why did they use both?Google’s tool only looks at your page’s HTML.GTMetrix actually loads your page.(That way you can see if server issues are slowing things down)Overall, Sean’s site loaded pretty quickly. The only problem was that his images weren’t well optimized.Once he optimized his images (by manually resizing them and specifying image dimensions in his HTML), Sean’s loading speed significantly improved:ConclusionAs you saw, this SEO checklist really works. But before you get started on the checklist, I’d like to hear from you. What did you think of today’s post?Or maybe you have a question about something you read.Source: The Complete SEO Checklist For 2020⁷
