PDF Editor FAQ

What’s the most outdated software you still run on a regular basis, and why is that?

(Wow, I didn’t realize this list would be so long! Maybe I should look for an outdated software anonymous support group…)I have Version 1 (1992) of the Oxford English Dictionary application. Made for Windows 3.1, I have to run it in a Windows XP virtual machine. It was the only version without copy protection, so I can copy it to the hard drive and not have to keep the CD in the CD drive.Though I usually use Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary to look up words, when a word I want to look up isn’t in their free online version, I start up their Third New International Unabridged application, version 2.5, from the year 2000. This had all the updates from 1961 - 2000, so it’s sort of a Third-And-A-Half New International Unabridged (they’re still working on the Fourth, but they may never print it).I still sell software I wrote with (1998) VB6. A rewrite would be several hundred hours of work and I don’t know if I will ever have time. That VB6 software is Excel add-ins. I maintain backward compatibility in them back through Excel 97, so whenever I make changes I fire it up to make sure it still works in that old version of Excel.I still edit my website with FrontPage 2003, the last version.I still do photo editing in (2011) Picture Window Pro 5.0.I still do Kindle book covers in (2011) Serif DrawPlus X5.I still do page layout with (2015) Serif PagePlus X9, the last version.I’m still running (2009) Windows 7 on my main computer. I’ve got Windows 10 on another computer, which had 8.1 and 8.0 before that, and the rest of the family, for whom I am their primary tech support, all runs Windows 10, so I’m familiar with it. I’ll upgrade before support runs out but I’m not excited about it.And finally, I do my word processing in WordPerfect for MS-DOS. Just kidding!

What is the purpose of Microsoft apps like Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Word (in a simple and brief manner)?

What is the purpose of Microsoft apps like Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Word (in a simple and brief manner)? The question has the sounds of a classwork assignment, i.e., someone’s homework.Do you know what each app does in general? If so, much of the purpose is obvious from their basic capability. That the question was posted anonymously reinforces that impression.Likely some teacher chose not to spoon feed students the answer, perhaps to teach HOW to find the answers to such questions (perhaps the course has little or nothing to do with ‘Office’ per se.)Perhaps the goal was to teach RESEARCH (e.g. starting with Google and Wikipedia to find out the answer to simple questions…):Try Google: what is microsoft officeLook on Wikipedia (one of the first results to the above Google query or check on the Microsoft Office site).Microsoft Office - Wikipedia — if you don’t know what each application TYPE is, there is a link for each in this article, Word=word processor, Excel=spreadsheet, PowerPoint = presentation (slide show), Access = database, Outlook = email & personal information manager (calendar/scheduling, meeting, to-do), & OneNote = notetaking …Microsoft Word: a word processor included in Microsoft Office and some editions of the now-discontinued Microsoft Works. The first version of Word, released in the autumn of 1983, was for the MS-DOS operating system and had the distinction of introducing the mouse to a broad population. Word 1.0 could be purchased with a bundled mouse, though none was required. Following the precedents of LisaWrite and MacWrite, Word for Macintosh attempted to add closer WYSIWYG features into its package. Word for Mac was released in 1985. Word for Mac was the first graphical version of Microsoft Word. Initially, it implemented the proprietary doc format as its primary format. Word 2007, however, deprecated this format in favor of Office Open XML, which was later standardized by Ecma International as an open format. Support for Portable Document Format (PDF) and OpenDocument (ODF) was first introduced in Word for Windows with Service Pack 2 for Word 2007.[8]Microsoft Excel: a spreadsheet that originally competed with the dominant Lotus 1-2-3, and eventually outsold it. Microsoft released the first version of Excel for the Mac OS in 1985, and the first Windows version (numbered 2.05 to line up with the Mac) in November 1987.Microsoft PowerPoint: a presentation program used to create slideshows composed of text, graphics, and other objects, which can be displayed on-screen and shown by the presenter or printed out on transparencies or slides.Microsoft Access: a database management system for Windows that combines the relationalMicrosoft Jet Database Engine with a graphical user interface and software development tools. Microsoft Access stores data in its own format based on the Access Jet Database Engine. It can also import or link directly to data stored in other applications and databases.[9]Microsoft Outlook (not to be confused with Outlook Express, Outlook.com or Outlook on the web): a personal information manager that replaces Windows Messaging, Microsoft Mail, and Schedule+ starting in Office 97, it includes an e-mail client, calendar, task manager and address book. On the Mac OS, Microsoft offered several versions of Outlook in the late 1990s, but only for use with Microsoft Exchange Server. In Office 2001, it introduced an alternative application with a slightly different feature set called Microsoft Entourage. It reintroduced Outlook in Office 2011, replacing Entourage.[10]Microsoft OneNote: a notetaking program that gathers handwritten or typed notes, drawings, screen clippings and audio commentaries. Notes can be shared with other OneNote users over the Internet or a network. OneNote was initially introduced as a standalone app that was not included in any of Microsoft Office 2003 editions. However, OneNote eventually became a core component of Microsoft Office; with the release of Microsoft Office 2013, OneNote was included in all Microsoft Office offerings. OneNote is also available as a web app on Office Online, a freemium Windows desktop app, a mobile app for Windows Phone, iOS, Android, and Symbian, and a Metro-style app for Windows 8 or later.…
