PDF Editor FAQ

Why are letters of recommendation valued so much at elite US universities? How does strong does a recommendation look?

Letters of recommendation are not only valued during the college admissions process, but are also extremely important when applying to jobs, graduate school, and more. Letters of recommendation are so important because they are the only time an objective third party weighs in on what type of person you are. Your letters of recommendation have the power to make or break your application. So, how do you get a glowing letter of recommendation? You have to stand out from your peers. I know, it’s easier said than done. But when you think about it, your teachers or counselors have to write hundreds of recommendations for students throughout their career. They most likely have a certain template that they use and just fill in the blanks for each student. A generic letter will obviously not help you stand out. So, I suggest writing a cover letter to your recommender, thoughtfully outlining what you would like them to talk about. Why should you do this?First, you want to ensure that your letters of recommendation will align with the rest of your application. If your application is all about how much you love science and always participate in class but your recommender says that you are a shy kid who love english, admissions officers will surely be confused. Think of your letters of recommendation as a way to backup your interests, achievements, and personality. Politely ask your recommenders if they can write about your specific interests and characteristics.Second, you want a standout letter! Your recommendation shouldn’t just state that you are a great student in class. It should say that you are the best student that your teacher has ever taught. Comparative praise will definitely help you stand out from your peers.Third, you want a letter that provides concrete details of your character. Give your teacher specific examples of when you worked hard in their class, or when you helped out another classmate. This will help jog their memory, and remind them of how you performed! Your teacher will surely make an impression on admissions officers if they clearly explain how you made a difference in their classroom, instead of just saying “this student made a difference.”Don’t be afraid to ask your teacher to tailor their letter of recommendation specifically to your goals and personality. If they do this, then their recommendation will definitely help your application!

Can I apply to MIT without sending my GPA at high school?

Even though I interview prospective freshman for MIT, I do not see the blank MIT online application very often. However, MIT is Not interested in your GPA. It could care less.MIT wants to see:Your complete official transcriptThe mandatory secondary school report on your high school that must be submitted along with your transcript. That report details the types and difficulties of the courses offered at your school, the grading scheme, etc.A mandatory letter of recommendation from your guidance counselor (or headmaster) that details you over a several year period as both a student and as a whole Person,Two letters of recommendation submitted by teachers that you select (one Must be a humanities teacher),SAT or ACT or TOEFL scoreTwo SAT subject test scores (one math and one science)The word GPA is not even in there, Unless your high school includes a “GPA” on your transcript, and then how they determine a GPA must be included in the secondary school report.Easy.Less worrying, and more enjoying attending high school and applying to colleges. All the best.

What is the naughtiest thing you did in school?

Junior year of high school. I despised my Honors English teacher, and the feeling was definitely mutual.I’ll call him Mr. P (because that was what I called him in class, though I always elongated the pronunciation so it came out more like ‘Mr. Pee’).He gave the most ridiculous exams; asked things about the font used in a book, where it was published, where the author went to school, etc. I refused to pander to these silly questions, so I usually got a D or F on the multiple choice / fill in the blank portion of the test. But I was an excellent writer, so I usually got an A on the essay assignments and essay portions of the exams.About two-thirds of the way through the first semester, we had to give a speech on a certain topic. He loved my speech so much that he asked me to type it up to submit to a contest. I had no interest in doing that for two reasons; I didn’t want to spend extra time to type up the speech, since I had given the speech from hand-written notes on index cards, and because I did not want that teacher to get any credit whatsoever for my writing, since I’d learned nothing from him. So I declined his offer. He told me that if I didn’t submit it to the contest, he’d give me a D on it instead of an A. So I said that I would go ahead and type it up for him. He reminded me several times about the speech, and I kept telling him that I was really really busy and would get it done over winter break. He became very nice to me, even giving me an especially easy topic for the final exam (he personally assigned exam essay topics so that he could give people easy or difficult topics depending upon whether he liked them or not), and gave me a final grade of B+ for the first semester, reminding me once again about the speech.Over winter break I dropped out of Honors English. He knew I would never type up the speech, and he was furious; absolutely livid. You could see the steam coming out of his ears when he saw me in the hallway after winter break. But that’s just the beginning of the story!Second semester of Junior year, he blackballed me from the National Honor Society. It didn’t really bother me; I didn’t think it was a big deal at all. But I decided to have more fun with him…First semester senior year, I approached him with a teacher recommendation form for Yale University. I said “Mr. Pee, I know we’ve had our differences in the past, but I know that you respect my writing abilities, so I was hoping that you could put our differences aside and write a letter of recommendation for me for Yale. Could you do that?”He grinned ear-to-ear like the Cheshire Cat, put his hand on my shoulder, and said “David, I am so glad you asked me. There is nothing I’d like more than to write you a letter of recommendation for Yale!”Two days later, I was in homeroom when I was urgently called down to the guidance office. I went into my counselor’s office, and he said “What the h*ll were you thinking??? You asked Mr. P to write you a recommendation for Yale??? You KNOW he hates you!! He blackballed you from the honor society, for goodness sake!! This is the absolutely worst recommendation letter I’ve ever seen!!”He went on to read excerpts of it to me; I couldn’t help but smile as I heard him refer to me as “the devil incarnate” not once, but three times, and stated that of all the students he had taught in his 30 years as a teacher, I was the absolutely least deserving student to attend Yale.My counselor went on to explain that luckily all the letters come through his office, so he will trash the letter and told me to ask someone else for the letter. I told my counselor “No, I don’t want you to do that. That wouldn’t be right. I asked him to put aside our personal differences and write me a letter based on my writing ability, and he agreed. You have to send out the letter exactly as it is.”He tried valiantly to change my mind, but I refused to budge, so he very grudgingly sealed the envelope and sent it, telling me I was even crazier than he thought I was!For the rest of Senior year, every time I saw Mr. Pee in the hallways, he would get that Cheshire Cat grin, and ask me how I was and if I was excited for college decisions to come out. Finally, mid-April rolled around, and word got out who had been accepted where, including who had gotten into Yale. I was sitting at a large table in the cafeteria, and Mr. Pee came over to me, put his hand on my shoulder, and grinned and said “So David, have you heard from Yale?”I looked up at him: “Yale? I didn’t apply to Yale! I got into MIT, Princeton, Duke… everywhere I applied, but I didn’t apply to Yale!”The entire table burst out laughing, knowing exactly what I had done, and that I never had any intention of applying to Yale. He turned beet-red, and steam coming out of his ears, and marched off in defeat! To add insult to injury, the rest of the teachers decided that it would look very strange if I was getting all these awards at the award ceremony, including multiple national awards, but wasn’t in the honor society, so the principal over-ruled his blackball and I was accepted into the honor society.
