Very little will benefit an actual person. It may surprise you to learn that most shelters have strict requirements you must meet before they will consider your application for accommodation. Most are biased towards a particular group. You must be male. You must be female. This shelter is for ex military. That shelter is for families. The one over the road is for mentally ill. The one next to it is for drug addicts. Etc etc.I knew of one shelter that would consider helping me because I was none of the above - I was “normal”. It had 20 beds. It had a huge waiting list and it had lines of people wanting help every night. It was almost impossible to get a bed there. Your donation to that shelter would not have helped me one bit. Your offer of food directly though, that probably saved a life that night. It did more good than you can begin to realise.I've been there, I've done that. And I always ignore people when they tell me I should donate to shelters and not to actual people, because those people don't have a clue what they're talking about.

A “Tobbe Magnus Edgren” is still more likely to be invited for interview than a “Ngazhui Tud An Ghaswabaralali.” Not because they don’t like Nga, but because they assume that hiring him, she, or it is likely to result in a lot more inconvenient paperwork and language confusion than ol’ Tobbe.
