PDF Editor FAQ
My dog is acting weird around my partner like she is afraid of her. I saw her kick the dog before but she promised she wouldn’t do it again. Do you think she is abusing the dog when im not around?
Yes. Yes, I do.Your dog is trying to tell you something, and you need to listen. This happened to me a few years ago. We had a young man staying with us for a few weeks waiting to move into an apartment. I noticed a few oddities with my dog when he was around, but they didn’t really register. For instance, any time the young man was in the room with me or walked toward me, McDuff would rush to get between me and the boy and growl. As McDuff was a puppy, we both just laughed and teased him about it. One day, I was going to be late coming home so I asked the boy to take McDuff out. When I got home, McDuff was in his kennel and was covered with grass and dirt. I asked him what happened, and he would not look at me. After this, we noticed that whenever the boy entered the same room as McDuff he would cower and urinate. And that was the last straw and explained it all. We knew he had hurt McDuff. McDuff was a brave, spirited little dog. We had never seen him cower or be afraid of anything. Our house guest was gone by the next day. After that, we discovered that McDuff was afraid of pop cans and bottles, of loud noises, of someone walking toward him fast. He hated and to this day, hates bicycles, as he saw the boy riding a bicycle often. He would not have anything to do with any men for about a year after the boy left our home. My husband was heartbroken about this, and the day McDuff finally crawled into his arms he burst into tears. McDuff is still reserved (but how much of that is Scottishness?), and especially around men. But he is healing. He had nightmares for a long time. I felt very guilty for a long time, wishing I had noticed sooner and feeling like I should have but didn’t. Sean, our guest, stayed with us for two months. I remembered that he made derogatory comments about McDuff and I didn’t think about it at the time. Now I think, who talks about a little puppy like that? Especially when it is obvious that your hosts value this puppy…he is our child. After two months of abuse from this monster it took over a year for us to see signs of healing take place in the life of our innocent baby.So yes. Your dog is trying to tell you in the only way they know. If the abuser had been my husband? He would be gone. Why would I want to live with a person who hurts an innocent animal? I found out later from someone who knew Sean that when he moved into his apartment he had a kitten that he killed by throwing it against the wall. I have prayed thankfully several times that that was not my McDuff. You will have to choose between your partner and your innocent dog who has done nothing to deserve ill treatment. But for God’s sake, don’t wait too long and if you don’t choose your dog, please remove him as soon as possible to someone who will love him and care for him. He deserves that.
Do pets understand and love their owners?
I believe that my Scottish terriers and I have a mutual understanding and loving relationship:they know when I am due to come home from work and are standing by the door every day waiting for me to enterWhen I was out of town visiting my parents, my older scottie grieved, sat huddled by the back door and would not leave, would not eat and became constipated. He did not lift his head or wag his tail. My husband took him to the vet and he had a slight fever so they gave him some antibiotics. The same day they came to pick me up from the airport, and he jumped into my lap smiling and wagging his tail and was himself again from that moment on.I am accident prone. I had a sprained ankle and my scottie sat beside me while recuperating until able to walk again. He also sat on my foot while it was mending from stepping on a nail. Whenever I am sad, he knows and gives me kisses.McDuff in attendance with the sprained ankle. What a concerned face! He is the best doctor and therapist I have ever had!
Are stuffed animals a dog’s “other” best friends?
Our Scottish terriers have a whole family of little stuffies that they sleep with, play with, hide under the bed in their lair, destroy, and bury.First there was Sharky, a small gray shark. Our puppy McDuff brought him out for us to all play with every morning. He loved Sharky and still does. He loved Sharky so much that we have bought about ten Sharkys. He seems to know which one is the original Sharky and prefers him. Oddly enough, some of the Sharkys seem to have different expressions. For instance, there is the evil Sharky, the goofy Sharky, the demented Sharky, etc. Sharky(s) also have two cousins, a blue whale called Barky. Sherlock is more of a fan of the Barkys. Then there was Donald MacDonald. He actually is a dog toy made after Mr. Bill from Saturday Night Live. We named him Donald MacDonald and made him talk in a fake Scottish accent. Our dogs HATED Donald MacDonald. They had utterly destroyed three Donald MacDonalds. Then there is Chicky. Chicky is a big stuffed, very silly looking chicken. They like for him to be around, but they don’t really play with him. They have set him up by their food bowls. Wondering if they know they are sometimes eating chicky(en)?Lately, we have bought them bigger toys, stuffies that are almost as big as they are. They LOVE them and are not intimidated by them at all, being Scottish terriers. They have a very large Sharky, who has a place of honor in The Lair and we never see him. McDuff got a stuffed lion with a lovely abundant mane for Christmas. He opened the package and immediately took the lion outside to bury him. My husband rescued Lion and he now also lives in The Lair.I have a stuffed Snoopy and Woodstock, as well as an antique teddy bear that they are itching to get their paws on, but they are put high on shelves. Sometimes I see them eyeing them specutively. When we first come home, they love to greet us at the door with a toy in their mouth, and when McDuff needs to go out, he will bring us one of the Sharkys. When we travel, we have to pack some of the toys in their bag. I have been both delighted and amused at how much these tough little scots love their toys! No matter how many they have (and at this point, it is more than some children), they are always delighted to get a new one!
