PDF Editor FAQ

What ignorant thing did a retail employee say that made you walk out of the store without buying a single item?

This happened a few years ago.I was celebrating a milestone in my life and wanted to get something nice for myself. I went to a jewelry store to see if there's a nice piece I could take home with me - for the right price. I love jewelry, and I love browsing at stores. So I went in and the sales staff have been courteous and accommodating. There was a nice set of ruby earrings and pendant that caught my eye. The earrings looked like this:Photo credit to Dignity JewelryAnd the pendant looked similar to this:Photo credit to Stargems PattayaWhenever I buy jewelry, I always ask the origin of the gemstone. It's a habit, as my family was in the jewelry business for more than 60 years. When I asked the lovely sales associate what type of rubies they are, she said they were cabochon rubies. And I replied to her that yes, I can see they are cabochon though normally I would go for gemstones cut with a few facets. I meant that, where did these rubies come from? She told me that they have a supplier for the gemstones. In my mind, I tought… Duh…unless they own the mines, then of course, they have suppliers of gemstones for their jewelry. So I told her, it's not the supplier I'm asking about but I meant the origin of these rubies. I noticed the purplish hue on the rubies in the earrings so I asked if they were, by any chance, African rubies. She looked at me like I'd grown 2 heads. She turned to the manager who was standing a few feet away and she came over and asked if she could be of assistance. SA explained to her I was asking where the rubies came from. Manager smiled as she stood taller and I swear, she puffed out her chest. She said in a slightly condescending voice," Ma'am, you have my personal guarantee that we have the best quality of gemstones and expertly crafted fine jewelry. Information on our suppliers are confidential, you understand."Now it was my turn to look at them like they'd grown a pair of heads each.Trying to be diplomatic, I told them that I am not in any way interested about finding out who their supplier is. Then I gave a brief explanation on the types of rubies, which countries they were mined, and the slight differences in their colors. At this point their eyes looked glazed and the SA looked lost… most likely thinking of her lost commission.I thanked them for their time and walked away.If the SA and manager herself couldn't answer sensible inquiries about the jewelry they're selling, then I'm better off taking my business elsewhere.Edit:I was asked a few times regarding the lack of information/paperwork on the origins of gemstones, which is beyond the control of sales associates and therefore, they cannot be faulted.I mentioned in one of the comments that there are times when the suppliers themselves do not know the origin, and can guarantee only the authenticity of these gemstones being earth mined and not simulated stones. When my grandfather was still in business, he operated a small jewelry shop with my grandmother and sales staff of only three people. He would set aside the stones with complete pertinent information and attach in each of their cases a small note indicating all the information for that stone. Details will be disclosed in the stone's certificate and appraisal forms. As for those with unclear origins, he would write in each of their notes a "?" and indicate "N/A" in the origin section of the certificate that comes with the appraisal form. In this way, his sales staff would have a reference for customers' inquiries. He would also remind his staff not to make guesses and assumptions when dealing with customers. If they do not know the answer to an inquiry, a simple "I'm sorry. I do not know" is the best answer.I think the same goes with other jewelry stores. I noticed that sales staff would often refer to a log book or the small tag attached to a jewelry when a customer asks for details on that particular jewelry. I also got a few answers of "I do not know" or "We are not sure" on my inquiries.
