PDF Editor FAQ

Would you rather do a face reveal or leave Quora?

Let me offer you an unpopular opinion: I’d rather leave Quora than have my face revealed. (At least at the current moment)(Yep, that’s me!)Believe me, I wish I could show my face- blemishes, eyebrow (singular), and crazy eyes. I’m not ashamed of my face. There are so many more reasons than vanity…Firstly, the NCAA owns me. Well not exactly, but at the D2&D1 level there are extensive rules governing what student athletes can and can’t do. Among the multiple rules currently in 2020, student athletes don’t own the rights to their own image. That means I can not model or promote a product, at least not without extensive paperwork and screening by our Compliance office. To violate my contract with the NCAA could result in being dropped from the roster or banned from playing. As a continuation of this point, I am a representation and reflection of my team. My coach likes to tell us (especially before big holidays and Spring Break when there are tons of parties) “You are a representative of this team and what you do outside of this gym reflects on all of us”. I’ll admit, I’m a flawed person. There are things I do, and criticisms of the athletic community which I discuss on Quora, that I would prefer to not attach to my face so that it does not reflect poorly on my team and I.Speaking about things that I write one here- I write about real people. While I use aliases for them, people who live in my area or interact with my cultural/social communities can recognize me by face and connect me to other people. For example if I write about a rager at uni where I had to help a drunk freshmen home, somebody might not know me by name, but be able to recognize me as someone who interacted with a drunk freshmen. From that I, or said freshmen, could get in trouble for underaged drinking.Another reason why I don’t show my face is because I don’t want people from Quora to recognize me in real life. Fun fact- I have some followers on Quora who I know of from real life (because we share the same circles), but they don’t know my name and as such don’t know who I am when we pass each other on the street. It’s an odd feeling to see someone whose name and profile photo I recognize on the street or across the room, and for them to not recognize my face.Part of the reason why I don’t want to be recognized in real life is because I write about extremely personal things and things that could get me in trouble. I would never want details about my dating/sex life to be broadcast to my acquaintances, and I would like to avoid any details of my going-ons-that-shall-not-be-named to get back to the athletic department. Moreover, I’m sure my friends would be displeased to have their personal details revealed in my answers and connected to my face.Quora is a safe space and a sanctuary for me. It actually reminds me of going to church to confess- your voice is identifiable and your tales are true, but the priest can’t see the face that’s on the other side. I believe that hiding my face is what allows me to feel comfortable with being so honest about my life. There’s something revealing about your face, as it is unique to you, that isn’t quite the same as showing your body. So I show my body because it explains my experiences (level of attractiveness, build, scars, size, racial identity, etc.), but abstain from showing my face so I still feel comfortable with being truthful. There might be a time when I reveal my face to you all. Perhaps a day when I’m not owned by the NCAA, connected to a group, or ashamed of my tales. At the present these fears are symptoms of youth. I might even choose to show my face to a select few who I’ve grown close to on Quora. But that level of exposure too is something that will take time and trust…The last time I revealed my face to someone on the internet, and later rebuffed their advances, they told me “You don’t look nearly pretty enough to be that picky- ugly b*tch”. Forgive me, but I’m not quite ready to remove myself from my shell for now.

How can colleges cut cost during the pandemic?

The easiest and arguably only way for colleges to cut costs is to cut non-mandating student-facing services. Most non-student-facing services and many that are student-facing are mandated by law. We can’t cut compliance offices, or ADA-related programs, or Institution Research (not related to faculty research), or Title IX programs. We can cut counselors, faculty, academics programs, and student support programs. Why? Laws. There have been cuts because of the pandemic. Athletic programs and athletic facilities staff have been furloughed. Housing and food service staff have been furloughed. However, those facilities are still costing schools money (maintenance, some energy costs, bond debt, etc.).People imagine that college costs have risen dramatically because of unnecessary “luxury” spending. The reality is that most of the cost increases are tied to rapidly rising healthcare costs, and mandated program costs. The ADA, Clery Act, and Title IX alone account for huge staffing increases.

Can someone help me figure out my eligibility to play D3 football before I talk to a coach?

For questions involving athletic eligibility, you should speak with someone in your college’s athletic department, preferably a compliance officer or an assistant athletic director. They are the people who can explain your current eligibility status, as well as your school’s academic and athletic eligibility requirements.I should also mention that while Division I has strict standards for the years you can compete depending on when you graduate from high school (4 years of eligibility within a 5 year period), Divisions II and III do not. Divisions I and II require athletes to go through the eligibility clearinghouse, but Division III does not. This is why you need to speak with someone at your school, because Division III has looser standards for eligibility. It’s entirely possible that you haven’t lost any eligibility if you never were actually on a roster.I think your biggest issue right now is that you are a part-time student. You usually need to be carrying a full academic load if you are going to compete in the NCAA on any level, you need to keep your grades up and you also need to be making progress towards your degree. That you are currently part time and have dropped out on the previous occasions when you were full time might be a red flag for your coach about your ability to handle balancing school and sports unless you have a good reason.Speak to the athletic department. They will have your answers.
