I got 2.21 gpa for my first year as a junior transfer because I had to cope with depression. Can I still go to top grad school?

No, you’re not going to be admitted to a top grad school.Picture the student in your classes who was miles ahead of everybody else, the student who did all of the assignments effortlessly and always seemed to be working on side projects with the professors. You know who I’m talking about, right? That student will have a hard time getting into a top school, even with a 4.0 average and strong letters of recommendation. If they had two years of community college, that probably makes it impossible.I’ve had student interns who did undergraduate research, published papers, had a terrific GPA and professors who were working their contacts at top universities, and the response was “don’t bother”. Even solid GRE scores didn’t move the needle.Understand that top schools have only a few thousand slots and the competition is worldwide. Almost all of their successful candidates are coming from the very best undergraduate schools, and the ones who aren’t are pretty much prodigies.I do have a bit consolation to offer you, though. When I started looking for grad schools my first step was to identify the top-20 and cross them off my list. I knew myself well enough to avoid that kind of competitive environment.I found a half-dozen likely-looking schools in the top 20–100 range. I interviewed (in person) potential advisors at each one, and ended up choosing the lowest-ranked institution on my list. And I thrived. Based in part on my work, my advisor took a position at a significantly better university and I tagged along. I had good luck with my internship, my boss asked to be on my dissertation committee, and that led to a postdoctoral appointment and eventually a staff position at the best supercomputing lab on the planet. I work with folks from Stanford, Berkeley, UIUC and UW-Madison, and I work with them as equals.I know at this point in your academic career it looks like racking up status points is the name of the game, and (for example) Georgia Tech has a lot more status than the University of Georgia. By your third year in grad school, you figure out that you and everybody else are trying to solve problems at the very limit of what you can do, or just slightly beyond. You’re judged on what you accomplish, not your test scores or the reputation of your institution. So go find a pretty-good graduate school and excel. You’ll be fine.

How does a doctor with a felony record before starting medical school survive as a doctor?

I was a board member for a medical school admissions committee for ten years. I also did a lot of interviewing of prospective medical students during that time and on one of those days I was fortunate to meet and interview a young man who was an “out of state” applicant. Because this was a State school, it received a great deal of funding from the State budget and tuition paid by the students didn’t come close to covering the actual cost of training. This meant that about 80% of the ultimate medical school class would be comprised of in state residents and a minority would be admitted from out of state. The idea was that if the State was subsidizing the education they wanted to offer positions preferentially to qualified candidates that were residents first with the idea they had a higher likelihood of remaining in the state after their training. A little controversial, but I follow the reasoning. This meant that the out of state applicants we met were typically incredible. This young man was no exception. He was about 24 years old and managed to work his way through college. He attained stellar grades and his score on the MCAT was in the top 10%. During the interview it became clear that he came highly recommended and his letters from references were incredible. One of them stood out though because it was from a high university official and contained a quote like this: “This young man has had to deal with extraordinary adversity in his quest to become a physician and I feel he deserves that opportunity despite his conviction and incarceration.” This, of course, led to a line of questioning that discovered that he had a felony conviction at the age of 18.It seems that the candidate was with a group of friends who committed a burglary. He was 18 at the time and the majority of his friends were juveniles though one was 19. He was convicted of second degree burglary and ultimately did a little jail time. After a period of probation he had his sentence reduced and he was free and clear to pursue the rest of his life in peace. This event seemed to crystallize his desire to change his life and all indications from the interview and the application packet supported that. He became a model student and was clearly qualified to become a medical student. The problem was that he would never be able to obtain a license to practice medicine in the state where we were interviewing him. A felony conviction clearly disqualified him from even taking the licensure exams. The admissions committee debated this issue for over an hour. The interviewers were all advocating for him to be admitted. We felt he deserved a chance and that he may be able to get some sort of special dispensation to take the test. He was a pretty powerful self advocate. The law might change while he was in school we reasoned. We also said that perhaps a license to practice medicine was not the point. Maybe the MD degree was the point. There are countless examples of people awarded MD degrees that never practice medicine but use the degree to advance medical knowledge in another way. The other board members felt that a felony conviction was a “fatal flaw” of some sort. They also felt that without a license to practice medicine the candidate would essentially be occupying a seat in the class that could go to a future clinician. They also pointed out that he said over and over that his desire was to take care of people and not contribute to medicine in a non clinical manner. We went back and forth on this and couldn’t decide. Ultimately it was referred to the Dean of the College of Medicine to decide. He interviewed the candidate himself which I appreciated. In the end, he decided to not admit him.I was disappointed but I accepted the decision and understood it. The Dean took the extraordinary step of helping him appeal to the Governor of his State of residence for a pardon which would essentially expunge his record. To be honest, I don’t know how it ultimately turned out. I would like to think that the pardon was successful and that he is a doctor right now somewhere but that outcome is not as likely as being ground down by the system.
