No he was a manipulator, capable to impress his audience with persuasive speeches. He was capable to manipulate people to a certain extent. That's what we've seen in Germany where people were kinda desperate after the defeat of the German army in WWI and the economically difficult period in the twenties. Many Germans thought Hitler could give Germany a new impulse. Hitler seemed even to keep his promises when he made believe Germany was recovering. But he all fucked it up by stimulating racial hysteria against Jews and by launching Germany into a war with unpredictable outcome. Hitler himself was an unpredictable person. An opportunist with suicidal propensity. In any case not a good leader.

When you enter into an aircraft for the air travel, you find everything so neat and clean, even though most passengers eat their foods during flight and throw waste there. You are impressed by its cleanliness as you see the captain and the air-hostesses dressed smartly and waiting to serve you with a smile.What you don’t see is that before you have entered into the aircraft, there had been cabin-cleaners who cleaned the aircraft in the most professional manner.If the captain and the air-hostess had to do the cleaning, they won’t look smart as they look.You are clean only when someone else is doing the dirty job for you.If some leaders have clean reputation, it is only because there are other leaders within the same political party who are doing dirty job for them.Let me give an example from the life of one of the greatest president of United States of America.Franklin Delano Roosevelt, popularly known as FDR, was one of the most popular President of United States. He led United States in the time of World War II and is credited for taking United States out of the great worldwide economic depression. He maintained the reputation of honesty and fairness in the eyes of American people who elected him four times as he served as President from March 1933 to his death in April 1945. Yet he was not as clean as people believed, only smart enough to use his secretary Louis Howe to cover his mistakes. Alfred B. Rollins (jr.) writes in his book “Roosevelt and Howe”:After 1912, it was impossible to think of either Roosevelt or Howe without the other. They operated as part of one political personality. They complimented each other in strengths and weaknesses. With smiles and warmth for both of them, genial Roosevelt specialized in the high level generalization, in persuasive speeches and personal charm in public contacts, and in broad questions of public policy. Sardonic, cynical, shrewd and chronically suspicious and worried, Louis Howe concentrated on secret manuour, the manipulation of the press, the organization of personal loyalties, and patronage hunger. ..And he proved to be a convenient scapegoat for their mutual error. Howe could arrange, Roosevelt confirm. Roosevelt could absorb the credit and Howe the blame. Speak the vision/goal/objective. Speak it. Speak it - you already have all the training you need to do that. Speak it, write it, blog it, convey it, YouTube it, but carry the torch and never put it down. Do that every day and in every circumstance. Never ever give up your opportunity to re-state that goal or that vision and pass it to or hold it up for others to see.This is the heart of being a leader, not charisma, not being organized, not being tyrannical, not being creative, not being persuasive (and those are all very handy traits) but just plain being the one that consistently and continuously and commitedly says what needs to be said in every instance in every circumstance. Especially when the circumstances are dire or there is no chance of success. Anyone can give up on speaking the vision, not everyone is crazy enough to never give up.There are leaders who spoke quietly, some spoke eloquently, some where charismatic (some were not), some spoke of things that were impossible, many spoke of things that did not exist, some did it through religion, some through politics, some through war. But if you pick a great leader and really examine what they had in common - I think you will find that they just used their mouth to take/enroll everyone involved in the same direction. Gandhi, King, Churchill, Jefferson, Lincoln, Mandela, Jobs, Elway, et al, used every single tool they had available to them, but they all used the tool of language and speech (verbal and written). You can even see this applies to the more sinister and evil of leaders.Speak words of encouragement and empowerment to the ones willing and wanting to follow or participate in this undertaking. Listen for others that can speak as you do or would do - and let them. But always speak the vision.Be willing to share or turn over leadership. After all, it's not about you but it's about accomplishing the objective, right?This is actually something you can try out and practice. A small project at work or community. Just have it be about what is said as opposed to how it is said or how forcefully or cleverly it is said or whether you have the right list of qualities or the right suit of clothes.And of course, once you put your heart, blood, soul and money into it there is no guarantee you will win. But hey, you wanted to be a leader. Do this often and become adept at it and you will achieve success more often than not.
