It is a little over two years of college coursework on one 7.5 hour long test. Yea, it really is that hard. There is an insane amount of information. The subject matter isn’t that difficult but it is just such a large bank of items that it is very difficult to cover them all. Most MCAT prep courses encourage 4 - 6 months of preparation.Also, the questions are heavy on critical reasoning. So even if you knew the facts perfectly you have to reason through the passage they give you to discover the answer. It is the most challenging test I have ever taken. I studied my brains out and still didn’t feel prepared enough - I don’t think anyone really does except for the few that are truly brilliant. It takes a lot of hard work.If you want to be a good boyfriend then give her as much time as needed to prep and study. Don’t take any of it personally. It is a very stressful test as it can make or break your medical school application. Years of studying, volunteering, shadowing physicians, and all the money paid in tuition could go down the drain if she bombs this test! This question wound up in my inbox somehow, which is weird considering it was asked a year ago. Nonetheless, as someone who went to medical school once upon a time, I will add my two cents.It’s neither a good idea nor a bad idea. There is no “good” or “bad” major for applying to medical school. There were people in my med school class who were music majors, art majors, and of course many who were bio and chem majors. It runs the gamut. Contrary to what some have said on here, I don’t believe that being a biomedical engineering major will help you on the MCAT. The MCAT is not an academically challenging test. It is more about test-taking skills. The basic knowledge from Bio, Chem, O-Chem, Physics, etc., is all you need to know. If anything, going too deep into the sciences may bog you down and make you think you need to know more than you actually need to, causing you to over-analyze test questions. Regardless, make sure and take a test prep course before doing the MCAT (like Kaplan, etc.). Like I said, it’s more of a problem-solving test than a test of your ability to memorize large quantities of information. Which is the way it should be, because after you take the MCAT, you will never need to analyze circuits or know what an SN2 reaction is ever again.As far as getting into medical school, this is where I would say a biomedical engineering degree would be less useful. The reason is that admissions committees sift through thousands of applications every year… and it seems like everyone majored in biology or some other science. Those applications get lost in the shuffle. People who major in something like, say, economics, will stand out. (Of course, you need to have a good MCAT score alongside it.) Given there’s about 5 applicants for every 1 spot, you want to stand out.I also have to say, I strongly disagree that your choice in major will help you in medical school. There is nothing you can do in college that will prepare you for medical school, aside from maybe taking a gross anatomy course at some point. I dual degreed in biochemistry and physiology, and when I got to medical school, it was like learning it again for the first time. College simply does not prepare you for medical school. It’s a common myth. What might prepare you, however, is the study habits you get into in college. Get into the habit of studying every night, even if your courses are easy. If you think you’re gonna have time to hit the bars with your frat bros every weekend while in medical school, think again. You will be spending all your weekends in a library. Even though you’ll be sitting in a lecture hall, your first and second year of medical school are not your fifth and sixth years of college.But if you like biomedical engineering, then do it. Basically, major in something in college that you enjoy and could make a career out of if medical school doesn’t pan out. Just know that your choice of major is almost completely irrelevant for applying to medical school. It’s all about MCAT, GPA, and letters of recommendation.
