What are some things that everyone can do to stop cancer from spreading?As I understand it, this question isn’t about avoiding cancer but stopping it from spreading once cancer cells have appeared.All cancers are different and we are still a long way from having identified their various mecanisms. We may understand how some work, narrow them to subtypes and treat them as best as we currently can, but in many cases tumors are able to mutate and outsmart treatments.This question is very personal to me since I have metastatic breast cancer and based on current medical knowledge, there is no solution to permanently halt this disease. And I know that in the coming years, I will go through several more treatment options until that final conversation with my oncologist telling me that there’s nothing more we can do and it’s time to enter hospice. Of course, I may also die before that due to side effects of the disease.All this to say, if I believed there was a way to stop these rogue cells from spreading i.e. killing me, I certainly wouldn’t turn a blind eye. If there was any scientific proof that vitamin C, meditation or [enter any of the non-scientific magical cure this type of question will inevitably get] actually worked to eliminate cancerous tumours, I would be the first in line to give them a try.However, they do not work.Nope. Big Pharma isn’t “hiding the cure”, my oncologist certainly isn’t hiding the cure. By not funding medical research sufficiently, one could argue that we as a society aren’t trying our best to actually “find the cure” (or cures, plural, as again we are talking of multiple diseases).Yes, a healthy lifestyle helps. Not being overweight, not smoking, avoiding UV lights, all of that certainly helps. I saw a previous answer mentioning these things and while they are a good reminder of the importance of being healthy, they also tend to perpetuate the notion that a healthy lifestyle is enough to protect you from cancer. I never smoked, didn’t drink, didn’t eat meat, ate my broccoli and all that jazz, and still was diagnosed with stage IV cancer at age 33.Tough luck.The five-year survival rate for my disease is about 30%. Last month was my four-year “cancerversary” and I will likely see my fifth and be among those 30% 5-year survivors. I’m even beginning to think I’ll make it to my 40th birthday.For three and a half years, my disease actually stopped spreading.Did I start juicing?Did I quit sugar?Did I meditate, talk to my cancer cells, become a beacon of positivity?Nope.All I did what follow my doctor’s orders.At time of diagnosis, my bones were full of tumors from my neck down to my hips. Chemo reverted that. After 6 months of treatment they were gone. Yep, evil chemo did that. The anti-hormonal treatment I am on was able to keep the cancer dormant for about three years.Until a couple of months ago when my PET scan started lighting up again. It’s just one spot in my spine and we are going to radiate it. That will stop it from spreading. For a while anyway. If more lesions appear I will most likely undergo a new form of treatment which may work for a while or may not work at all. At this point in time, we humans are unable to stop my particular cancer from spreading. We know to slow it down, it may become dormant for a while but no one has ever been cured from it, be it via traditional or untraditional treatment. What traditional medicine did, however, was to offer me these three years of reasonable quality of life. Three years to make memories with my daughter. To see her enter First Grade this week.I’m grateful to modern medicine for allowing me to live the past few years and giving me hope to see a few more. I was close to dying when I was diagnosed, left untreated I would only have lasted a few more weeks. I am thankful and at the same time I am mad that we as a society do not fund research enough to offer cancer patients more tools to fight this disease (see my other post on the topic).So what are some things that everyone can do to stop cancer from spreading?On a personal level, sure, it’s always good to have a healthy lifestyle.On a more globabl level, it’s also good to protect our environment and make sure all of us have affordable access to quality medical care. That research is funded. That science is taught and understood.We may not be able to cure cancer for a long time but let’s at least have the morality to favor policies taking care of one another. I’m no conspiracy theorist, I don’t think “the cure” is cynically kept away from us, however a part of me does tend to think that the fact that we humans still haven’t been able to “stop cancer from spreading” is but an unflattering reflection of our values and priorities.
