Ask a question that your child will want to answer.Broad questions like “How was school?” or “What did you do today?” are actually quite challenging for a kid. Where do they start? It’s confusing. Nothing comes to mind.Instead ask about something your child will remember vividly.I might ask my 3 year old son, for example, “Did anyone use ‘potty words’ at school today?” He’ll giggle and start telling me all the ridiculous things that he did with his friends when the teachers weren’t paying attention. It is absolutely delightful.My daughter, age 7, is more challenging. But even so, there are usually a few good starting points. Asking about who she played with at recess is usually a good one, and she consistently loves talking about lunch. Sometimes I’ll ask if anyone got in trouble today—it will almost always spark an interesting conversation, though I usually feel a bit guilty about it.Once you’ve sparked your child’s interest, you actively listen for as long as they want to talk. You encourage them by saying “hmmmmmm” or “oh?” or “wow”. Be genuinely interested, but don’t interrupt. If there’s a pause, don’t try to fill it! Pauses are frequently a child’s thinking time. I am consistently surprised at how often the best stories come after a long pause.By this point, hopefully your child will have warmed up to the conversation, and is really enjoying talking to you. The child may then move on to more serious topics, or if not, at a very (very) long lull in the conversation you can ask them about reading, or math, or something that they may be less enthusiastic about. Sometimes my daughter will even say “Ask me another question!” because she is having such a good time talking, and needs help for further inspiration.My kids love our conversations about their day. But I have never, not even once, gotten a good answer if I ask “How was school?”.
