PDF Editor FAQ

Why is St. John pronounced several different ways?

I doubt if anyone can answer this question with any certainty. There are so many examples, a lot of native English speakers also have problems if they are not familiar with the pronunciations.Marjoribanks - MarchbanksFeatherstonehaugh - FanshaweMainwaring - ManneringMagdalen - MaudlinCaius - KeysI dare say I could think of more if I put my mind to it.One theory is that the names were originally specific to particular regions of Britain with very strong regional accents/dialects and so the pronunciations became somewhat “mangled” because of the local accents. I am not sure how valid this is, but when you look at how even common words can sound very different in different dialects, the idea has some logic.

What are the best restaurants near St. John's University's campus?

I presume you mean the Queens campus, so I’ll enlighten you on the neighborhood eats. There’s a ton of good stuff in the immediate neighborhood on Union Turnpike. There’s plenty of good Asian places, Italian places, delis and more.Probably the Holy Grail place in the immediate vicinity is Double J’s Deli, up the turnpike by 168th street. Pretty much anything you could ever need as a college student- snacks, beverages, a very vast selection of alcohol. But their beauty lies in their legendary fresh sandwiches. Literally the whole back wall and a section of the side wall is covered in different selections. I’ve been going there since I was a freshman, and I still do over 4 years later as staff. Still haven’t tried every sandwich, but I’m getting there! Every Johnny makes a pilgrimage there at some point, and most of them keep going back. And they’re open 24 hours, which is a BIG plus. There’s a ton of great Asian places. For me, I always love Gan Da Sushi for the value. Great bento box lunch specials, you get a lot for a decent price. Across the street is Thai Taste, they’re also very good (the crab rangoons are fantastic). Green Lotus is across the street from school and that’s popular as well. I’ve been there a couple times and it’s fairly decent, but their bubble tea is solid. Empire is a bit further down that way, and I’ve never been in there but their take-out is pretty popular. Down the other way on the pike is Kyoto, and that’s great Asian fusion, though it’s a sit-down place and more pricey. Definitely solid for a special night out with friends.Pizza is huge among the students at St. John’s and there’s gonna be debates, but the big 3 places are Vincenzo’s, Regina’s, and D’Acquistas. Personally, D’Acquista’s is my favorite, and they’re also a sit down place with reputably good pasta as well as their pizza. It’s a bit further out of the way than the other 2, but it’s well worth it. Regina’s is literally across the street from school at the corner of Union and Utopia Parkway, and it’s decent. It’s not my number 1 choice, but they make a good slice if you want something but don’t wanna go too far. Vincenzo’s is down the other way, and when I was a freshman they were famous for their dollar slice days. Now it’s their $1.50 slice days, but they make a very good slice so it’s worth it. Small place, so it’s usually best to take it out. I’d rank it D’Acquista, Vincenzo’s, and Regina’s in that order for me. But hey, you’re in Queens you’re not gonna come across a ton of bad pizza, it’s all pretty good.Bagels n’ Cream is next door to Gan Da, and they’re open early, like 6am. I can’t tell you how many times I popped in there before a 7:30am class and snagged a fresh bagel and coffee. Plenty of great cream cheeses/spreads, coffee is solid, prices are decent. Very clutch choice early in the morning, especially before the places on campus open up (around like 7:30 ish). However, it’s still not my number 1 bagel spot. If you have the means to get to Bagel Oasis on Horace Harding Expressway about 5 minutes away on the Q30/31 bus, or 2 minutes by car up Utopia, they’re my favorite. Fresh bagels 24 hours a day, and you haven’t lived until you had a fresh bagel at 2am after a hard night of studying. It’s a bit out of the way, but worth the excursion. So those are my favorites. In my time as a student I saw some mainstay places close. Sly Fox Inn went under towards the end of my junior year, and that was there for years- my mom used to go there when she was my age. It’s a Japanese place now. Ray Bari Pizza is now a Vietnamese place. And Iguanas, the popular Mexican cantina next to Thai Taste went under just a few months ago.Now that’s just the immediate vicinity. On a night out with friends, it’s definitely worth it to branch out a little. In Forest Hills on Queens Boulevard there’s a TON of restaurants of different varieties. But my favorite place to go for a late night with my old jazz band pals up there is Cheeburger Cheeburger. Put whatever you want on a burger, bomb milkshakes, open late. It’s a born winner! Just a 10 minute ride on the Q46 bus. There’s plenty of great places, so it’s good to sample them all. Food is a huge part of the culture at St. John’s; every event’s got it, tons of clubs/extracurricular associations give it away, and delivery guys are always coming in and out the gates. You’ve got no shortage of places to choose from, and I just named my favorites. There’s much more out there, so go check it out!Happy eating!
