Why hasn't a modern gun manufacturer developed and sold an exact replica of the German luger in multiple calibers?There are good reasons why the Luger, otherwise known as the Parabellum pistol, is no longer in production.First, it was a very expensive pistol to manufacture. This was due to its incredibly complex design and the necessarily complicated machinery on which to produce it. In addition to this, that complicated machinery required highly skilled and well-trained workers to produce it.The tooling for producing the Luger no longer exists. This means starting from scratch. It’s now well past a century since the Luger came out. Manufacturing techniques have evolved by orders of magnitude since the days the Parabellum was in production. Computer controlled machinery is are more advanced than they were at the beginning of the twentieth century. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that this fact makes them any less expensive to manufacture. It’s that darn complexity of the design that would keep their price tags very high.Charisma is the perfect word to describe the mystique the Luger pistol possesses. \Because of the unavoidable expenses of turning out high quality pistols the Parabellum design would require, there would have to be a pretty long line of customers ready, willing and able to fork over the amount of money required to purchase these pistols. And nobody is about to crank up production for such an expensive proposition on mere speculation that demand would be sufficient to guarantee a return on the investments required to get production rolling again.Sure, the Luger pistol is cool as hell. They have a mystique about them that no other handgun has ever possessed. I seriously doubt that in a hundred, or even 150 years from now, the Glock will have the drool worthiness that the Luger possesses.It’s possible that a group of investors could acquire the necessary capitalization to put a limited run of Lugers into production, but not very likely to happen. It would be too much a novelty. The possibility of sustained, ongoing production would never happen. Certain realities have to be faced: the Parabellum, despite its charm, its mystique, its utter charisma, is an outdated, obsolete design. It simply isn’t a very practical handgun from a modern perspective. Investors aren’t interested in doing one-offs, limited production pieces. Investors want something that is going to produce substantial returns on their investments over the long haul.There is also another factor to consider in which any new production runs of the Luger might be inhibited: political.For better or worse, the Luger pistol will always be associated somehow in the minds of the public with Nazi Germany. Never mind the fact that this gun was designed and originally produced for the Imperial German Navy under the reign of Kaiser Wilhelm II, decades before the Nazis came to power. It’s simply a fact of life. This would make European production of this gun a near impossibility. As for possible American production, the political climate toward guns right now is rather heated and inflamed. And considering the virulent anti-gun positions espoused by the current administration, I think it’s highly unlikely that a new Luger could be produced here in America either. In addition to the Nazi stigma the anti-gun Left would seek to attach to this gun, there’s the hostility toward guns that administration has in the first place. While handguns aren’t on Biden’s public agenda, in all likelihood, there would be hostility beyond measure for allowing new production of this gun to ever see the light of day here in America, while demand would never reach the level necessary to overcome such opposition.EDIT: It’s getting rather tiresome and irksome that so many commenters wish to take issue with my use of the term “virulent anti-gun positions” regarding Joe Biden and his administration. Biden is on record dozens of times throughout his storied career stating his beliefs on guns, and policies he wishes to implement. All one needs do is call up the Google machine, or do a brief search on YouTube to find out exactly what Joe Biden (and the Democrat party at large) have to say about guns. (And yes, there are a few Democrats scattered hither and yon that proclaim their fealty to the Second Amendment, but they are becoming more and more scare, fewer, and farther in between. And that loyalty to 2A is limited to guns for “sporting purposes” or some such other load of bilge.)Since the inauguration, nearly a dozen anti-gun bills have been introduced into the House. All of them are more restrictive than ever before, and do nothing to reduce crime, or enhance “child safety.” One proposal even calls for all prospective gun buyers undergo psychological evaluation before being “allowed” to buy a gun. How’s that for due process, or prior restraint?So before climbing up on your white horse to bash me over a stated fact, not an opinion, I heartily suggest you do some research before reaching for the keyboard.I have never deleted a comment made to any of my posts.
