Who are the War Elephant Sheepdogs?

Hi guys,I’m the newest Sheepdog, as of… about two hours ago. Many of you already know who I am as a Quoran in general, so I’ll just let my default credential speak to that for the moment. Also, there’s this.I’m not very active on War Elephant (though I hope to remedy that) because I tend to go on a sort of “autopilot” on Quora sometimes, and forget that anything exists except “Answer” and “Reply”… but I’ve been following WE (the Space and the original blog) since the beginning.Jon has created exactly the sort of space (and Space) that has long been needed to get conservative views out there in a way that can bolster those who agree with us already, but also be kind towards, and maybe even persuade those who disagree. But as a Sheepdog, I volunteered and was brought on for my troll-hunting expertise. In a word… I’m more than a bit anal and more than a bit obsessive. So, two or three times a month, I’ll come across a spammer, or a troll, or some other “bad actor”, and then spend two or three hours tracking from that account, to all potential numbered clones of that account, to accounts that follow them, or accounts which have participated in question edits to the same questions they’ve vandalized, or any of a dozen other things that are easier for me to pursue than to clearly articulate. This has given me a very specialized set of instincts and skills…Like if Bryan Mills[1] were a pudgy nerd… and not at all badass… and went after internet trolls instead of international traffickers and terrorists… using Aspie hyperfocus instead of lethal martial arts…So, nothing like Bryan Mills at all, actually. But I’m hell on wheels when it comes to finding trolls. My typical weekly “Thank you for reporting” message from Quora has double and triple digits across all categories. And, of course, as Jon articulated in his Sheepdog intro post, I never report anyone for anything that isn’t an objective violation… even when some accounts make me really want to do so. And, at the risk of sounding like a cliche, some of my best friends (offline and on Quora) are liberals, so no one should ever worry that dissenting voices won’t be welcome on the War Elephant under my watch—just follow the rules. If you’re ever the victim of any form of harassment, whether on this site or via off-site collateral attacks, please shoot me a message. I don’t care which “side” is attacking which—it’s unacceptable.I want to see this Space become the “friendly face” of conservatism that I know it has the potential to be.Footnotes[1] Taken (2008)

How should I keep track of volunteer hours? Also, do “volunteer hours” mean the actual time you stayed volunteering or just the one event you did?

Are you keeping track for school, for the organization, for yourself, or for some other reason? If it’s a requirement for school, or if it’s something the organization does to report to their donors and supporters, take the time to learn how they want it done. When student volunteers help us park bicycles, they sometimes bring a form from school, and the organization’s volunteer coordinator fills it out. Find out if that’s what’s going on, or if an email confirmation will do, or if there’s some other requirement. If it’s the organization keeping track, ask their coordinators what to track, if it’s not clear. When I did reading tutoring, their form had separate lines for tutoring time, tutor preparation time, learner preparation/homework time, and travel time. I believe they wrapped all that information into their annual report. In the absence of other instructions, I’d suggest reporting time you actually spent there, doing whatever you were doing, unless you did something significant before you got there. So if you helped us park bikes for a couple hours, you’d report those two hours. If you spent another couple of hours at home improving the brochure, you could report those, too, but the trip to get there and the time you spend emailing, “Yes, I’ll be there Saturday” probably don’t count.

When high school students volunteer, how are they supposed to log their volunteer hours? Can you keep track of your hours with a form from the internet, or can one be obtained from a high school counselor?

You get a particular form from the guidance department. You need to have the volunteer work approved and signatures collected.Don’t lose it. Without those signatures on that form as proof, you must start all over again.Ask the secretary of the guidance department about this. That person will probably get you into see your counsellor.
