A lockdown which is not total is totally not a lockdown.Jamie Wang's answer to Now that it has been revealed that Wuhan’s infection rate was around 5% (500,000), 10 times the official number, can we conclude that China's real death toll would also be 10 times of the official figure?In my presivous answer, due to a comment, I found out that the real number of people getting infect in Wuhan is much bigger.It’s because the coronavirus only causes damages in a small amount of people whom are infected. Many of the people who carry the virus show no sympton at all, and they spread the virus.Luckily enough, Beijing ordered the whole country, especially Wuhan, to have a strict lockdown, which greatly limited the spread from those with no symptons. Worst case they would only infect their family members, which could reduce the pressure of hospitals by reducing the numbers of people who have symptons.See how London applied its lockdown? Among all the people who escaped from London, how many of them acutally carry virus without noticing? No one knows. Because UK is not able to provide a full test to everyone, nor it could convince people to stay at home for a while, like 4 to 6 weeks.It’s like trying to hold some soup with a sieve, and it ran everywhere.In China, a lockdown is no something which you could choose to comply or not. It’s announced with level 1 health emergency response, and based on laws.The so called personal freedom in a pandemic is just purely irresponsible and selfish. Your behavior could endangered other people’s lives. You maybe a lucky one who got infected but with nothing wrong, but your breath contains virus which could be deadly to others.It is until the moment one is lying on bed in an ICU with the lungs hardly working that one knows how serious this is. However, to some people, they would never know how this feels, because they are natually kinda immuned to it.In China, we have a high moral standard when it comes to life and death. Most of us are willing to sacrifice a little bit of personal freedom for while in exchange of the health of the most. Also, the faster the pandemic got contained, the earlier the society could go back to normal.I saw all western countries kept jumping between a sloppy lockdown and reopen the economy. However, without containing the infection chains, there is no chance to reboot the economy. The more rounds a country keeps jumping between them, the worse the general situation is.The US is messed up. Trump does not care about the pandemic at all, and he has no intention of doing anything since the election. Biden is still not in the office, and even if he was, the situation is not going to improve. The problem of US’s antipandemic actions is not entirely the president. Trump only made it a little bit worse. The issues is systematic.UK seems to be willing to do something. However, its politicians somehow lost their minds. The initial plan of herd immunity shows that they were gambling about how serious this virus really is, and they lost by having the PM in ICU. However, as the root of neo-liberalism, UK and US government both promote themselves as small government, which leave most of the things to be solved by the market. However, capitalists would not sacrifice for the general public.Japan is the most ridiculous one. For a long time, Tokyo area maintained a steady new daily cases. People thought that it’s because Japan did a good job on containing the virus, and Japanese in general have the sense of wearing masks. It turned out that they were still using fax and only fax to transfer the patient data to the departement which does the count. 1 fax machine could only handle certain number of papers, and there are only 2 fax machines in the office. No matter how many more appeared, they could only receive that many paper, hence the steady numbers being announced. Later on they added several more fax machines, and the daily new case numbers went up.With all the irresponsible people and politicans, the pandemic will last longer than I thought.In China, we found too many imported items with coronavirus which caused quite some new cases. From frozen food, and recently car parts. It shows that the pandemic is out of control.However, the most weird thing is that some westerners seem to be satisfied as long as they are told by the news that China is worse, or at least lying about its real situation.Please be aware that this number 374124 is not ONE THING which 374124 people died, but the thing which 1 person died being repeated for 374124 times. This 1 person used to be loved by others, these 374124 people were loved by their family members and friends. True or fake, calling China for being responsible won’t bring them back. It also won’t save others who are going to die.Unless someone really step up and do something useful.

Well, this might come as a shock to you, but what you learn in high school are real-life skill and knowledge, on so many different levels.First, there’s the stuff that’s actually, directly useful in everyday life. Making basic calculations will get you through your taxes. Speaking a foreign language will let you travel. Your first presentations will train you for the probable public speaking occasions you’ll get in your career. Knowing how your body works? Try doing without it! And keeping your body in shape by doing sports is obviously good for you.Then, there’s what you learn in high school that helps you cultivate a sharp mind. Reading a map, being familiar with the scientific method, writing an essay, being easy with numbers, commenting on a document… Practicing all of that is necessary to prepare your mind before you can learn the more complex stuff in uni or your job.Perhaps more importantly, that’s what will allow you to navigate life with ease. Without it, every letter from your landlord, every appointment with your doctor, every tax return form will be a tiring intellectual effort.And finally, there’s everything that makes you an interesting, rich human being. Having read Molière, understanding how World War I shaped the entire 20th century in the West, knowing the rudiments of how nuclear powerplants work. Accepting teamwork, criticism and difference.Don’t you agree that this is fundamental for building a personality, something that will get you self-esteem, friends, lovers, intellectual satisfaction, jobs even?Of course, high school isn’t sufficient to make you a successful person. But it gives you the opportunity to develop the bare minimum of human qualities and skills to become a functional member of society.You can’t train and be ready just for your future job as soon as you turn 18. Where would that leave choice and exploration? Where would you find the time to develop as a human being?Okay, I get all of that. But still, shouldn’t we at least learn the stuff that’s useful for everyone? Doing your taxes, finding a job, a house?Here’s my final argument. Taxes will be different in ten years. Jobs will be different. Housing will be different. And if you travel to another country, everything will be different right away. What good would it have been for high-schoolers in the 90’s to learn how to use a fax machine? Or for students in the 2000’s to learn how to use Microsoft Encarta?Most of what you learn in school is useful for the rest of your life. And even more importantly, rather than teaching you stuff that’s useful today and could be useful tomorrow, it develops your intellect, and that’s the only durable way to empower you.Now, granted, there could be some improvements, and there will be: education should evolve with its time, along with the great trends.One major change I would make right now is to introduce coding at the beginning of high school. Algorithm design is a very rich mindset, that’s almost universally useful. It also turns very easily into a professional skill that’s highly valued.
