What is the best experience in your life, like you did something great?
This experience is about my work life - one of several good experiences. It wasn’t that I had done something great but it did provide a lot of job satisfaction. When I got posted at the High Commission of India in London, one of the facts that struck me when I came to the High Commission (called India House) on the first day was the dark exterior of the huge building. India House is an iconic building built in 1930. It was designed by world famous architect, Herbert Baker. It’s such a grand building that the tourist buses sometimes stop in front of the building to allow the tourists a good view and opportunity to take photos. But this is how the building looked when I started my posting at the High Commission in 2009:The stone facade had never been cleaned since the construction of the building. Facade cleaning of a listed building such as India House is a complicated process in the UK requiring several clearances and technical expertise. Besides, other factors such as minimal disturbance to surrounding areas have to be factored in. In 1990s, an attempt was made to get the facade cleaned. After a year-long procedure, a cleaning company was shortlisted. The estimated cost of work was over one million UK Pounds. After more than two years of efforts, the work came to nothing. The project was given up.After spending two years in the High Commission, I was also given charge of the Projects & Maintenance Wing. When I re-initiated the project, I was told that I was wasting my time. On going through previous files, I found that the High Commission had prepared the tender document on its own. I felt that it would be better to hire an external technical consultant who’d not only prepare the tender document detailing the scope of work but also ensure that the contractor carried out the work properly. It seems counter-intuitive but the cost of work drastically came down when we hired an external consultant. It took about a year to get all approvals and shortlist a contractor. But the work was finally over and done at a cost of about one-fifth of the cost estimated in 1990s.And now India House looks like this:
What is the weirdest thing you've ever witnessed at a car dealership?
Not in a car dealership, but in a general and automotive engineering company where I was the general manager. Our business was supplying and servicing vehicles fro 30 ton trucks down to small saloon cars. We held a contract with the regional area health authority to supply and service their district nurse’s cars, and that was where the fun began. The nurse who complained that her car wouldn’t run properly and kept stalling at traffic lights. That was in the days when cars had a choke control on the dash that had to be pulled out to start the engine. My mechanics couldn’t find anything wrong with the car, so we asked the nurse to explain to us how she started the car every morning and how she drove it. She sat in the drivers seat and pulled out the choke button, hung her handbag on it, and was good to go! It took a bit of persuasion to convince her that was not the purpose of that button.Another district nurse who brought in her car complaining that it smelled strongly of petrol and there must be a leak somewhere. There was; it was from a petrol can with a leaking lid in the trunk! One of our vans was involved in an accident. The driver was just going too fast and couldn’t make a roundabout — he ended up in the middle of it. The local police investigated and then came to my office to tell me that their accident investigator has identified that the front wheel drum brakes were faulty, and we would be charged for the offence. They wouldn't accept my explanation that the vehicle didn’t have front wheel drum brakes, so I called in an engineer from the vehicle’s manufacturers. He was a little more direct than I with the cops: “We have not used drum brakes on the fronts of any of our vans in the last twenty years, instead we build with things called ‘disk brakes’. I suggest that your accident investigator either goes back to school or gets fired!”There was the driver of a 34 ton truck used by the council waste disposal department to transport containers of waste to the local landfill. He took a roundabout too fast and ended up with his truck and its container on its side, giving us a recovery operation that was, literally, to clean up someone else’s shit. Clearly he had never heard about body roll in the suspension, since he declared that his truck had never done that on normal road bends!A local authority that decided it would be cheaper for them to hire their vehicles from us rather than own them directly, so they presented their specification of their requirements and asked us for our quote. It was very detailed, but to comply I would have had to source the vehicles from motor museums all over the country! I refrained to ask who prepared the tender documents in case I threatened his pension. Then the local dealer who undertook the statuary test on my wife’s car (I have reported this before on Quora). I told her to take it to them because it would have been improper to test it in my outfit. They failed it on two components, neither of which were fitted to that car. There is something about the automotive industry that attracts the chancers and nutcases of this world!
