Not yet.I have never wanted to become anything other than a fighter pilot. Right from when I was very little. There used to be this TV advertisement on Doordarshan. Action Shoes or something. Kid ties his shoe lace, throws a paper plane and it sort of changes into a fighter plane in the next frame. I can barely remember it but now I think it was a Jaguar.Kids say all kind of darned things and my parents let me dream on. They bought me toys and books and comics with an aviation theme. But they used these to totally manipulate me. I did not like to run early in the morning so dad would tell me of some pilot ejecting in enemy territory and running cross country to get back to a BSF outpost. He would say that if I did not run, I was not being serious about becoming a fighter pilot.Mom is totally whacky. Kg class, drawing exam, I say that I am having difficulty making the face of the clock round. She hands me a compass :p . 2nd Std, I ask her why is the sky round? She ends up explaining the whole solar system and shows me a lunar eclipse the next month. I am not sure that my mother realised I was a kid :pAs I grew, I became very good at studies. I sucked at most other things. But I knew a lot. Than one day, my mother decided my destiny. I was in 6th or 7th class. Most astronauts have been fighter pilots. Especially in the beginning. ( All my heroes. If you do not know, u do not deserve to know)It was not all smooth sailing. As India turned 50, I was winning seminars where I made presentations on India’s progress in the field of IT, Satellites, Rockets and Defense tech. I was sort of a local academic rock star already. Everyone had high hopes for me. Except, I was slowly dying inside.I did not know how to become what I wanted. For starters, India hadn’t and still hasn’t launched an astronaut. 2nd, up to that time, there had been only one Indian Astronaut. Rakesh Sharma. Only 2 were trained. Sharma and Ravish Malhotra (I still feel sad for Malhotra). Both had been fighter http://pilots.an And India did not allow women to fly fighter planes.Ashamed to say but I wished I were a boy. I could go to NDA and atleast one difficulty would be solved. How I was jealous of boys, only I know. And than a miracle happened. It is ok to ask people how much is their salary. If you do not tell, they will tell you. But it is considered arrogant to show ambition. It is considered desirable to have money. Foolish to have passion.I am yet far away from the goals I set for myself as a 15 year old kid. I am not sure how I am going there. Marry a Chinese, have a fling with Elon Musk, invade ISRO or become the pirate of Dalal Street and pay the Russians…. I do not care. I am going to space.
