PDF Editor FAQ

What are some harsh truths about college that people need to realize?

1. STEM field degrees and a few others like business accounting, instead of studying in a humanities or social sciences field, generally really do help you to get a good job right after graduation and get started on a money-making career.2. Going to an expensive private school will not necessarily be worth the 4-5 times more in tuition that you'll have to pay.3. Doing two years of community college then transferring to a university will save you or your parents about $10,000 at a minimum in college costs.4. It's easier to get into the school of your choice as a transfer student rather than playing the Freshman admissions competition game. The exception to this are Ivy League, Stanford, MIT, Caltech and similar schools which have a very low attrition rate. For competitive public schools (like University of Virginia), however, being a transfer student will greatly increase your chances at admission.5. Many highly ranked or rated schools really do discriminate against Asian-American and white student Freshman applicants. The University of Virginia and College of William & Mary were recently outed for doing this, for example (https://ceousa.org/attachments/article/1329/Preferences%20in%20Virginia%20Higher%20Education%20-%20September%202019.pdf ).6. You'll find that your post-graduation student loan debt is an onerous burden that will affect your quality of life and life-savings. Whatever you can do to avoid taking much debt, such as going to a lower-priced school (like a public school with in-state tuition), community college, working part time, getting a scholarship, etc will save you a lot of grief. I had $25k in loan debt when I graduated and it took me 10 years to pay it off.7. Expensive private schools will sometimes offer you a great sounding deal that isn't really that great. For example, there is a private university in my area that costs $56,000 a year in full tuition. However, that school will often tell applicants who say that they can't afford it that they'll waive 25-50% of the tuition costs. That may sound like a great deal, but they'll still be paying over $25,000 in tuition which is double most public universities and will still, therefore, end up with a $100,000 student loan debt.8. Universities will hold internship and job fairs and then hardly any students will show up. Always attend these fairs that your college puts on. They are invaluable. The companies and organizations who have booths will be very interested in getting you into a valuable internship or a post-graduation job. Don't waste the opportunity.9. Professors will give you better grades based on your attendance. You'll notice that many of your classmates will often skip class. Don't do it. The instructors do take notice on who attends and who skips and will give you as much as one grade higher just based on that, or will try to cut you a break if you don't do well on an exam. Even if you pull an all-nighter on a paper, still get up and get to class and stay awake. If you can't avoid missing a class, email or visit the professor afterwards and explain your absence and ask what you missed. This shows you care and the professor will notice. Also, try to not to dress too sloppily.10. The friendships that you make in college may pay big networking dividends later in your career. You should participate in student activities and consider joining a fraternity or sorority.

Porland: What are some good neighborhoods for a couple with a small child in Portland?

It all really depends on what trade offs you are willing to make. I would argue that all the neighborhoods are good for a couple with a small child except the immediate downtown area, but it depends on what you want. The Pearl is the trendiest with high end shops and apartment buildings. Jamison square is a mecca in the summer for kids to get out of their apartments and run around in the big fountain. Nob Hill is also pretty cool as it reminds me of Seaseme Street with a mix of residential and commercial buildings that are mostly walkups. On the eastside, Sellwood is a laid back neighborhood that feels like it has a separate identity from the rest of Portland. Lots of people move down their to have families and it just feels more geared towards kids than other parts of the city. My family lives near the Irvington, Grant Park and Laurelhurst neighborhoods. They all have big parks that kind of anchor the community along with a commercial main street. The downside to these neighborhoods are they are some of the most expensive ones in the city. We live on the border of Irvington and Elliot, so we did not have to pay as much for our townhouse. In general, the east side has more places that might be affordable, while the west side is more trendy and yuppie like the Pearl and the South Waterfront. The last thing you really should look at are the schools. I was a substitute teacher in PPS for a year and there is a huge variation in the schools. Ainsworth and Chapman on the west side are considered the best and are on par with the elementary schools out the suburbs. On the east side it is more hit or miss, but I really liked Beverly Cleary and Llewellyn. A lot of the schools up in North Portland and out in East Portland are pretty bad. Some do a great job like Astor and Boise-Elliot, but they are dealing with students who have little home support. Some of the schools are so bad that they can’t find subs because no one wanted to sub at the schools.

What should people moving from a big city to a small farming town know beforehand that isn't necessarily obvious?

Joe mills must never have lived in a small rural community. He is wrong on almost all that was written.Small rural towns are a great place to live. IF you like friendly neighbors, people who will give the shirt off their backs to help you in whatever you need. Quiet nights, slow pace of life. No neighbors yelling and screaming 24/7. Little traffic noise, few fire/police sirens etc. These are the prosThe cons are stores close at 5 or 7 and are not open on Sundays. Need to go to a bigger town to do full shopping other than just the necessities that are available in the local markets. Dogs barking once in a while.Joe said the all stink, not true. Many smaller communities do have live stock yards but not all by any means. He said gunfire regularly yet I have yet to hear any gunshots at all except near hunting season and they are off in the distance in some field someplace.Yes there area lot of tractors on the road but that is because you and I both like to eat, Guess Joe does not. Just exercise caution when passing them.Yes the local high school team plays on friday or saturday nights. Its a great place to meet neighbors, get to know people and have a good time rooting on your local kids to victory. Oh and some schools are small enough that they play 6 or 7 or 8 man teams. Yes that happens.Yes farmers and rural people like to hunt deer, because it supplements the dinner table and tastes great as a nice roast Deer in onion gravy. But there are NOT enough hunters any more so exercise caution when driving at night as deer are common on the roads at times. AND hard to see as they blend in the background real easy.Police response time is average. Most small communities have either a town marshal or a small police force. Response time will indeed be less than in a bigger city but, crime is far far lower in smaller communities. That and since every one seems to know everyone,,,,,you can't get away with it there.I have to agree with Joe on number 7 few mechanics have a tow truck. The only time you complain about the rain is when its too much too often and floods the local creeks and rivers. Which is usually about once every ten years or so. Otherwise we look forward to the rain to keep the garden and crops watered.Entertainment is few and far between in small towns, Some do have a movie theater, there are of course bar and grills, A down home cafe with good cooking but close at two pm. One or two fast food places like a Burger King or Subway, or a Runza type place. Not much more than that usually. One or two small grocery stores. a post office, a Medical clinic that is open Tuesday and Wednesday only. Hospital will be in the larger city over there. So Joe is not correct on small town living as I am as I live in the country and my nearest small town (Purdum)is a population of 9 people. at ten miles away, next is a town of 19 ( Brewster) that is 16 miles away, third is a town of 102 (Dunning) at 18 miles away. Then there is Anselmo, which is 186 people and has a few of these type businesses. But the town of Broken Bow has most things we would need at 75 miles away or two other towns about the same distance would be Ainsworth or Valentine. All located in Nebraska USA… If you draw a line from Brewster to Purdum From Purdum to Dunning and Dunning to Brewster, I would be right in the middle of that area. On 1487 acres of prime cattle country.Cheers.

I have been using the OSX built in movie editor and it was just... lacking. I found CocoDoc and just WOW. I couldn't be happier. It has all the same capability with even more features and, more importantly, flexibility. Anything I don't know can be figured out with a quick google search and customer support is excellent. Great job on making great software!
