2017 is the 75th anniversary of two key developments, both had the capability of igniting, one the body, the other, the mind.One scorched the torso, resulting in painful death, while the other awoke and enlightened millions demanding their legal rights. But both were the products of brilliant minds.One intentional, the other accidental.Louis Fieser was an extraordinary chemist, working in Harvard. With a sharp eye, incisive mind and sparkling intellect he unraveled the mystery of the steroid hormone cortisol, described the structure activity relation of the blood clotting factor, vitamin K and did basic research on cancer. So when the DuPont and Standard Oil, corporate giants in US, proposed a contest to chemically convert liquid petrol to a semisolid gel form, it caught the attention of the young chemist. The challenge was to make a chemical compound that can be easily transported as a semisolid, keeping the inflammable characters of petrol intact. Fieser tried several combinations and finally mixed extract of crude oil (Naphtha) and Palmitic acid from coconut oil with petrol to produce a new mixture, which he aptly called NaPalm. Little did he know that the destructive power of Napalm would burn vegetations, destroy homes and burn and scar people for life, its brutality extending from the killing fields of Vietnam to the villages in Papua New Guinea . Napalm bomb perhaps is one of the worst human invention, meant to desiccate human life in the most painful way.Around the same year far away in Hungary two brothers were busy making their career, Laszlo as a news editor and George as a chemical engineer. Laszlo was given the charge of editing the Hungarian newspaper Elotte. He quickly found the main bottleneck to his work, was the pen. The ink pens had their quota of problems, messy, slow drying, the writings fading away over time. Large amount of time of the editor was wasted in filling pens with ink. Exasperated Laszlo decided to change all that. He tried filling long plastic tubes with different varieties of ink, including printing ink, but they would not flow. After a lot of research and advice from brother George, he produced a mixture of gum acacia, vinegar and printing ink, which in right proportion flowed out evenly. The tip was replaced by a small roller ball with a conical metal segment at the bottom. The ball smoothly rolled over paper to produce a clean smudge free writing. In 1939 Laszlo Biro immigrated to Argentina and commercially produced the ‘Eterpen’. Today the tweaked version of Eterpen, the ‘ball pen’ rechristened ‘Biro’ sells 57 pieces every second around the world.Though Biro pens had nothing to do directly to end or neutralize the brutality of Napalm, the hundreds of articles and comments penned by top thinkers, journalists and decision makers did go a long way to undo it. The human mind ignited by the writing instrument made sure that more bodies don’t singe by the inhuman napalm.It justifies rephrasing the quote ‘a pen is mightier than napalm’
