What is life like in Russia? Is it as bad as it is portrayed in the Western media?
I have read the rest of the answers and I feel that they either show a rosy idyllic picture focusing only on the positive sides or too negative following the stereotypes. Here are some of the pluses and minuses of living in Russia and I will try to specify when there is a major difference between Moscow/SpB and the rest of the country:Pluses:A big percentage of people have their own apartments which they received in USSR and then privatized during the 90s.Education is mostly free and there are still a number of good universities especially if one is talking about math/physics/engineering. In the recent years amount of money spent on education has been decreasing and combined with the continuous brain drain has been a big negative factorMedicine is free but here is a caveat- everybody who can afford it buys an additional medical insurance as for anything serious free medicine is like a Russian roulette- you have done really good doctors and some really terrible ones. Similar to education, there have been s decrease in govt spending that really affected people. Also there has been a push to reduce foreign medicine while pushing hospitals to buy Russian competitors often of much lower quality. The next plus is more comparison with the US- you can travel to Europe relatively cheaply and flying within Russia is even cheaper as it is subsidized by the governmentThe cultural life in Moscow and St Petersburg is excellent, there is a lot to do and one doesn't have to pay much for itRussian women are beautifulMinuses:Average salary outside Moscow, SpB and couple of other regions is still very low. Pensions are about $200 on average. The crime rate is higher than in any developed country. The number of people in prisons is second only to the US among big countriesThere are major AIDS issues: more than 1mm people only officially have it and not enough is done about itThe corruption is part of the daily life not just on a higher level ( happens almost everywhere) but in every day life where you can pay a cop a bribe not to lose your licenseThe court system does not work well- nobody trusts it and the acquittal rate is close to zeroMost of the TV channels are state owned and full of propaganda. If you want to start your own business it is much tougher than in any developed country- ton of red tape and danger of raidersIf you are an opposition politician or investigative journalist, your life is much tougher than usual. You will be harassed and have a high chance of being imprisonedIf you are gay/lesbian, the situation ranges from not very comfortable in Moscow to horror stories in ChechnyaOverall, the life in Russia is pretty good if you live in a big city and don't want to be involved in politics or business. It is riskier than in developed Europe with higher crime rate and rotten justice system but the probability of something happening is low. I specifically tried to minimize the mention of politics and current Putin regime but for a number of people it is a factor: positive for sone and negative for others.
