PDF Editor FAQ

Is stressing yourself worth it?

There’s stress, and then there’s stress. If you ask someone in athletics, “When I work out and I push myself, I end up sweating and sore, is that OK?”, they would tell you that as long as you weren’t in pain and have no medical conditions, you are doing fine. If you say, “Well, I started to run, and then I got this pain in my leg, so I ran for three more miles, and the next day I’m hobbling and still in pain, is that OK?”, they’ll tell you that you need to ramp it down and not run through pain, as that’s a great way to injure yourself or worsen an injury. The same is try for stress. If you can finish your homework stress-free in 3 hours, and you have three hours to spend on that homework, there’s no immediate incentive to improve. However, it’s doubtful that you have this time, or will always have this time. If you can get from 3 hours to 30 minutes and not sacrifice quantity, that’s great, but the question becomes, “At what cost?” If you are a bit tired or anxious and need to unwind for 5 (or 30) minutes, then you still have saved time, and you are learning to solve problems more quickly, which is potentially hugely beneficial. If you end up with a miserable headache that incapacitates you for the night, or are liable to experience an anxiety or panic attack, suddenly the value goes down and the cost rises astronomically. This is where the problem lies.I find that most college freshmen are fairly new to hard work. They need to make adjustments. One example of this is that some study/work very slowly because they are “multitasking”, often listening to music, playing games, chatting on Facebook, watching Netflix, etc., and of course you can’t actually multitask; your conscious attention has to be focused somewhere (so you can chew gum and walk, but not read and watch TV). Different people have different skills for tuning out; I can write (or program) with music on, but I can’t read with music on. It’s still not multitasking; I don’t usually recall what I was listening to because my attention was on my work.Since I don’t know what you mean by “a stress ball in the back of [your] head”, I can’t give you a final answer. I can say a few things about dealing with stress:Don’t rush for the sake of rushing; it is astonishingly rare that going much faster doesn’t impact quality. If you know you need to improve your speed to meet some non-arbitrary, non-self-imposed goal, that’s different.Eat regularly and properly, sleep consistently and for 7–8 hours a night, and get regular exercise (going for a walk is great exercise; it doesn’t have to be leg day at the gym or a 5k run). OK, stop laughing. No, I’m serious. Yes, I understand you can’t do this perfectly; neither can I, but we can both try, and it will help each of us.Schedule study breaks. This is now called the “pomodoro technique”, although it has existed forever without this name, and I’m not sure of the relationship between studying and tomatoes. To use this technique, just develop a rhythm that works for you, like study for 25 minutes and break for 5 minutes, and follow that rhythm. It’s that simple. It works (differently for different people and different work, so remember, it’s your rhythm).Seriously, remove yourself from distractions. Libraries have historically been great places to study; when I’m not going in to my office, I work at the local public library (which has a quiet room where I can work, which amuses me to no end). Distractions differ for people, too; I can work at a coffeeshop (largely out of experience and access to caffeine, and experience came because of the need for caffeine).Avoid energy drinks and excess caffeine. They’re just stimulants, which are really good at making you feel productive, but you aren’t necessarily getting much done. In addition, if you need three Monsters to get through a typical school day, you have built (and are growing) a distinct tolerance, meaning that you are dependent on these, need them to function at all, and they aren’t doing anything for you. When you really need them,Disciplined work can often decreased time spent, because the emphasis is on spending time wisely (at the right time). “A stitch in time saves nine” and all of that jazz. Start your homework the night you get it, and work on it some each night. Cramming is bad and a waste of time.At US colleges and universities, there are non-credit programs to improve time management, study skills, and other areas that will make school easier, more enjoyable, and more productive. This is just coaching; are athletes allowed to avoid being coached? Are they ashamed? Do you think you were born knowing all possible ways to study? (The answer here is “no”.)If you are finding yourself in physical or mental pain because of the requisite work you need to do, you need to talk to someone. If you are in a college or university in the US, there will be a counseling office, and you need to avail yourself of them. Don’t be ashamed; would an athlete be ashamed because they had to get a trainer to wrap or ice a sore joint? School will always be stressful for the vast majority of students, and that can be fine, but if you aren’t able to function, you need some help. Get used to it; adult life is all about needing help and wishing it was as available as when you were a kid.Good luck!
