I didn’t have the vocabulary to describe it until I was a teenager, but it was exclusion.After my best friend and neighbor moved away when I was 8, I had no one in the neighborhood that I could play with. My parents were too busy to arrange playdates. I remember frequently, as early as fifth grade, realizing that everyone else hung out with other people in the class on the weekends, and I didn’t. Monday mornings in school were always depressing, because that’s when everyone talked about the fun things they did with each other over the weekend. I had nothing to add to those conversations.It got worse in seventh and eighth grade when people started dating and going to dances and football games and whatnot. I went straight home and stayed there. I had no way to get to any of the social events, and no one invited me anyway. No girls liked me, and the boys who used to at least be friendly with me in class started focusing more on the girls and less on their guy friends.I remember one night when I was 14 my mom could tell I was upset and asked me what was wrong. I was upset because it occurred to me that not a single one of my classmates said a single thing directly to me the entire day. The only people who spoke to me were the teachers and my parents.My classmates didn’t bully me. I was never teased. They just pretended like I didn’t exist. And I guess, in retrospect, I really didn’t exist to them. Sure, I was there and I took up space, but I was never a participant.Eventually I found a circle of friends in high school, and getting my car and license on my 16th birthday was a huge help. I still didn’t start dating until I was in college, but at least I went to a friend’s house every now and then and just hung out with other people my own age.
