Personal convenience. The church is too distant, transit there has become too difficult, hours conflict with the best time to have the grandkids visit, etc.Personnel issues. The music performances are not to your taste, the voice of the new minister is grating, the new board president is unpleasant.Doctrinal differences. Perhaps you have developed doubts about your church’s position on some issues. It doesn’t resonate with your innermost sense of truth.Curiosity. You wish to experience other forms of the church experience. Perhaps you’ve heard that a particular minister delivers powerful sermons. Or you want to hear a gospel choir. Or your Jewish neighbors have invited you to a service they think you’ll find interesting.Adoption of a view that there is no one “right” church; there are many flavors of devotional activity and fellowship, and there is value to be found in most, if not all.In my life, I was raised as a Reform Jew, was unaffiliated during college and early career, tried to return to synagogue and found the ones near me very lacking, and was then active with a Unitarian-Universalist church. My main reason for leaving them was that their long-time superb organist retired and the music became very uninspiring to me. I then attended Centers for Spiritual Living with excellent music departments. Due to my wife’s health limitations, we now primarily attend a convenient local United Church of Christ with an excellent minister and a small, very welcoming congregation.

From my experience of SSBs, this is what I have observed ;Screening Test : Generally you'll find the assessors in a formal attire and you'll hardly find someone dawning a complete uniform. However, whenever the Board's president will deliver the welcome speech, most of the time you'll find him in his uniform.Psychology : The psychologist that is present during the whole process will simply be in a formal attire each and every time.Personal Interview : In this process, you're most likely to meet the president or the vice-president of the SSB board and guess what, you'll find them in a semi-formal or formal dress code.Group Testing : The interesting part of the selection process. You'll find your GTO in a semi-casual trouser, a polo tee and a pair of shades. Also you'll find most of them wearing a cap, and trust me sun is not the only reason, there's something called a style statement legacy they maintain.Conference : You'll see all the board members in complete uniform sitting in a U Shape conference table with the President at the center. You'll be delighted for sure.PS : This is just my experience, it might be different from what you have come across or observed during your interviews. Hi. Do you think that a NCC cadet has descended down from another planet? If not than why should his SSB interview would be different?My advise would be. Leave your NCC superstar mindset behind. Start preparing like any other candidate. In NCC you have just worn the khaki uniform - not the Olive Green. Relevance of your NCC tenure is not more than 0.01% of what is required to be an officer in the Indian armed forces.I am saying so despite having 8 years of NCC experience. (3 year in Junior devision and 5 years in Senior devision)The only thing the the GTO, the interviewing officer and the Psychologist will consider is that being an NCC cadets and being in leadership position in the Corps (i.e. Having rank of UO or SUO) you are required to be better than other cadets and display more readily the OLQs on which you will be scored.In the 3rd SSB interview I appeared and was recommended it was a NCC "special" entry and mind you, every single one in my batch of 60 candidates was having a C Certificate with Alpha grading. Every 2nd guy was UO or SUO. Most of them had attended RD camp or had passed out of "Thal" Sainik camps or "Vayu" or “Jal” Sainik Camp. 2 of them had even attended the Para attachment camp and made 5 successful free fall jumps at Agra.You would feel that these chaps would have been accorded a red carpet welcome and would have been treated as Creme-de-la-creme of all candidates?NO.From the duty NCO- who recieved us at the railway station, to the Board president; we were treated as green horn candidates of whom only a handful would be recommended for IMA/OTA.The entire 5 day SSB was just another batch for the Rank and file at the SSB centre.This being my 3rd SSB overall I can safely tell you that this batch had the maximum number of self-entitled, over confident, loose mouthed scumbags who felt they were doing a favour to the country and the Army by appearing in the interview.I do not know how most of them performed in the pschy tests and the personal interview they sure made a mockery of themselves in the GTO tasks.I consider myself lucky that the GTO could feel my condition which was like being trapped inside a cage with these lunatics.Looking back today I wonder how I was the one of the 2 chaps who got recommended.
