I’ve read about incidents where HOA have tried to enforce their rules on homeowners who were not encumbered by the HOA in any way.Basically sending them violation notices and fines for not following rules they are not obligated to follow.It usually took a lawyer and a lawsuit to educate them that the homeowner in question was not part of their association.These organizations are often not run by professionals, rather by officious amateurs and have no idea where their membership association ends.

Have you ever noticed that you act slightly differently with different friend groups? I have. This is completely normal, in case you were wondering. It is also an opportunity for gaining insight into someone.Some of my friend groups are pretty reserved, so that side of me comes out when I’m with them. Another group is pretty outrageous, so I’m more likely to let loose, swear, and be ridiculous with them. Another group is more intellectual, so I become an amateur philosopher with them. And so on.This is not about me (or anyone) being fake or disingenuous. It’s what happens when we feel comfortable letting out different parts of our personality. Being reserved, outrageous, ridiculous, and intellectual are all parts of me, but they show more or less depending on the group dynamics.So if I really want to know someone, I look at who they voluntarily spend time around. Who do they feel comfortable with? Which groups do they look forward to and seek out? How do they act when they are with those different groups, and how much variation is there? Do new facets emerge, or do they change completely? And, which associations do they feel they need to hide?Seeing someone in more than one social setting tells me a lot about that person.

The best camera that you need, if you want to title yourself a professional photographer, is the one in your hands that captures what you see and feel; the brand, make and model doesn’t make you a professional photographer, the knowledge and experience on how to use a camera does. There are so many misconceptions in photography, and this question truly exposes one of biggest misconceptions that a particular camera will make a photographer better — not true.Let’s look at your question and the misconceptions a bit more. First, there is a misconception that a client will judge you by the camera brand, make, and model you carry to the shoot. Not true today, heck, some clients will hire a professional with an iPhone and it’s been proven thanks to photo editors and art buyers scouring Instagram and noticing the talent.According to Time, the chief Asia photographer for the Associated Press, David Guttenfelder is a highly awarded photographer whose photography changed through Instagram. In the article, How These 6 Instagram Photographers Got a Million Followers, Guttenfelder states, “I instinctively shoot things on my smartphone first. I see square now.” The article also states, “This way of thinking has followed him now that he’s working on a regular basis for National Geographic. He still shoots with his DSLR camera, but the magazine often selects images he’s made on his iPhone.” (Photo below taken by me with an iPhone 4.)The misconception that a particular camera brand, make, and model will make or break a photographer reminds me of the misconception that a professional photographer is one who’s primary source of income is photography — oh so bogus today. While today is the biggest time for interest in photography thanks to the Internet and social media, it’s the worst time in photographic history for professional photographers. Many photography studios have closed and many professional photographers are now diversified into video, multimedia, and teaching.I’ve been teaching photography workshops for 18 years now, back when photographers shooting film were more prevalent than those using digital cameras and often someone attending would ask the question, “What is the difference between a professional photographer and an amateur photographer?” Rarely will someone respond with “By the type of camera brand, make, or model they use,” but at every photography workshop someone will say that a pro makes money and an amateur doesn’t.Not all pros make money people, wake up. Yeah, a professional photographer normally charges for their services, but that doesn’t mean they’re profitable. Many professional photographers have a regular day job that supports them more than their photography. A lot of professional photographers went bankrupt during the transition into digital technology and one reason is because everyone with a smartphone now has a camera in their hands.The real difference between an amateur photographer and a professional photographer is that a professional photographer knows what makes a great photo and an amateur does not. A professional will only show you the great photos, an amateur will show you all their photos and the reason a professional will show you only their best, is because they all take bad photos to get that one great photo.I can guarantee you that the camera brand, make, and model will make no difference in decided whether you are a professional photographer or not, just like a pool cue stick doesn’t guarantee you’ll become a bollard’s world champion. A professional photographer knows the only photograph that counts, and it don’t matter what camera brand, make, and model they used to capture it, is the best one of the total shoot.
