PDF Editor FAQ

How did you get through time in prison?

Every place is different in prison so this won’t apply to all. Look online, on youtube or ask someone you know who did time to see what your local prison is like. Your mileage may vary. In my country you’re sent to the prison local to wherever you did the crime. First you’ll be in jail until you get to trial if not already sentenced and then until you’re moved to prison if you have more than a year. If under a year it’s just jail. You can get out on bail before trial but it’s usually expensive unless it’s not a serious crime. People might be rougher in jail than prison ironically but the opposite can be true especially in higher or maximum security prisons. Low-security prisons you’d think they’d be safer full of non-violent people but not always the case. In prison they can’t get away with being an ass so easily because they’re stuck there longer.Prepare for prison if you think you might go ahead of time. Learn lots of phone numbers and addresses of family, friends, your partner and your lawyer. Get a good one if you can afford it. Public defenders are overwhelmed and don’t have enough time to do that much for your case. Find out what you can have and get mailed to you in prison. See if you can write letters, get emails, get some university courses done or read books there. See what you can get on commissary if it’s available publicly. Some prisons you can get a TV in your cell so you might want some $ mailed to your commissary account. If you’re unlucky when you get stripped down they’ll take your underwear and make you wear a jumper-suit if you’re not in tighty whities and raw dogging it would suck just FYI. You’d get to wait until you get some mailed to you or buy it there on commissary. You may only be able to wear a white undershirt too so look that shit up. Buy it if that’s how it is, have someone on the outside mail it or just wear it if you know you’ll probably be arrested. It’s harder to get things from prison without someone on the outside to help. It’s harder too in prison because of how little they pay you.If you’re not female you can skip this paragraph, stop reading and jump to the next one cause it’ll get nasty like TMI here. If you’re female well many states in my country don’t give you nearly enough tampons so many inmates are free bleeding or try making their own out of whatever they have. It works as great as it sounds. So plan ahead & have someone to mail those to you if possible or send you money for it if they are on commissary. They can be valuable to trade or sell to other prisoners who have no access to more for a while. Now when you get to your cell, drop off your stuff and go do something away from it. Watch tv, take a shower, chat, go to the phones, you can talk to your cellmate first if they’re there just don't stay in your cell all day and many inmates will assume you've done time before. Don't use the phone too much, it may cost $ out of your commissary or inmates may be annoyed if you are on it all day everyday. Doesn’t mean they’d do anything to you but it could create problems especially if they suspect you’re a snitch but best to be on their good side. Remember every letter or phone call you receive or send out is recorded.Don’t be the newbie who falls for pranks like there's a pool or ice cream. Some pranks are harder to spot than those. The gist of those two is they tell you to go to the CO to fill out a request form for ice cream or to get into your underwear & fill out a request form to go to the pool . If it sounds too good to be true that's because it is. People will do dumb stuff and get into trouble because they’re in a gang or like most inmates just bored. Eat all of your food, it's gross but you'll be starving if you don’t. You might only get 2 meals a day. You don't want people bugging you for it, trying to take it or knowing you're new if you don’t know how they treat new people there. People will be starving enough that they might steal from you. An inmate might come in to scope out your cell too just to see what’s lying around. Best to keep things out of sight. Here they give you a locker.Being new isn’t an issue always and don’t be something you’re not because it’s probably worse to get caught lying. If they learn you're new it’s okay just know inmates can try taking advantage of or may mess with newbies. Some places there’s people not about that life or even those who are about that life who both will genuinely help those that’re new and answer any questions you may have. People might be demanding to know your charges or why you’re there. In other places its relaxed & they don’t ask or care if you answer. If they find out without you telling anyone they were told by a CO who learned about it, they may have reported your crime on the news, had someone on the outside look it up for them online or that one person you told talked to a little birdie. As long as it’s not violence against women or children and they don’t think you’re a snitch then you’re fine. Inmates can like bank robbers and those that protect their family, many just think it’s cool and want to hear robbers’ stories. It’s best to not talk too much especially if it’s not stuff the court doesn’t already know because some inmates will try to snitch or testify against you for an instant even if it’s a lie just to get a reduced sentence or faster parole. Rarely a prison hire people to go undercover that try to act like but aren’t even prisoners. They are likely to talk all official sounding, look out of place, not use any slang or talk at all like people do on the street. Those aren’t definite signs on their own but them always being on the phone, always talking to the COs or always leaving & coming back is fishy. A common excuse is they went to see their lawyer , for medical stuff. Probably the biggest sign is the COs keep giving them special treatment, they aren’t subject to the same rules or they keep getting things prisoners can’t get even on commissary. Real inmates can go do that but snitches usually do those so if you get a gut feeling. Don't snitch or rat anyone out even someone that fights you or inmates might hate you for it or try to fight over it. If someone accuses you of snitching it may be a big deal if people believe it and by the way people can project themselves onto others.A CO might give an inmate special treatment or vice versa too if they are crushing. Just don’t screw inmates or COs because they don’t consider either of you as able to consent in a correctional institution and you really don’t want that charge. If you get caught doing so once or just for jacking off after 3 warnings you get onto the registry. Some people will just jack off all day long right in front of you. I’d imagine guys do it more.Stand up for yourself verbally and physically because even if you don’t fight back you’re either going to solitary confinement or they’ll move you to a higher-level prison. You can get sent to a higher-level up to level 5 or move to a lower-level down to 1 through good behavior. You probably shouldn’t fight if you’re afraid for your life and don’t need to like if they’re huge, in for life, known as crazy/psycho, they have a shank, are high up in a gang or are a murderer. More inmates probably will take a lot more shit from or not fight those folks. They’ll think you’re a psycho if you keep beating someone after they’re unconscious or after they have given up. Most inmates avoid and won’t befriend psychos. Those with the biggest status in prison are shotcallers of a gang, good fighters or those that people are just too scared to fight. In some places fighting your bullies will make everyone respect you more or stop it in their tracks even if you lose. But people other places won’t respect you any more for it and just make fun of you if you lose. Male inmates can see you losing to a gay man, transgender person or a chomo in a fight as shameful for some reason. Being either of those three things aren’t a big deal in some prisons but are in others. Most prisoners like watching fights for entertainment but sometimes a gang will have your back even if you’re unaffiliated and don’t want to join. Even if your harasser keeps coming at you after a fight for more well at least others see you're not an easy victim. If staff learns of a fight they’ll go around checking everyone for visible wounds. If they hear it or see lots of prisoners are crowding somewhere they’ll come looking too. You can make a poor man’s handwraps just wrap toilet paper around your fists. It won’t protect you from impacts but it keep the fist in proper shape and support the wrist by keeping it aligned if delivering a punch and it supports your wrist. Prisoners and COs probably know what’s going down if they see it. If you're needing medical care from a fight or just want to leave you don't need to name the assailant or whoever is bugging you. You really should seek medical care if you get shanked even if it gets you moved to another level or . Best to fight in cells or bathroom as they don’t have cameras.Toilet paper is useful for lots of other things. If your cell is too cold then wet and throw wads of it into the vent to block the cold air. A CO can get angry or demand you take it down but that could be all they do about it even if you keep doing it. They can use certain commentary items as a means of exchange like toilet paper as if it were cash. You’ll get in trouble by COs for hoarding it if they do a shake down depending on the rules.During a shake down they can shut off the toilets so you can’t flush contraband they smuggle into prison and old stuff can come up if they look in the pipes. They’ll charge you for insanely dumb shit like off-label use for having aspirin as not prescribed to you that you got from another inmate. You need to be in the cell as fast as possible even if they are only checking your cellmate because if your cellmate has something they shouldn’t they might hide it in your stuff like under your mattress. Even if they aren’t checking for you they could look at your stuff anyway. Inmates get creative like they’ll cut into a mattress, put things in then sew it together. COs know a lot of those tricks and shaking a mattress you can usually hear things rattling, see or feel a bump. You shouldn’t have things that aren’t allowed but prison is boring and if you need money for commissary restricted items help you do that. A CO can fake being nice like “OK this is the last time to surrender any contraband or I’ll charge you for anything I found” they’ll charge you anyway so that’s why it’s better to take the chance of them not finding it. Ones they don’t know involve a razor blade. You can use it to get down to the bottom of laundry detergent, put stuff there. If for some reason they look through it there’s a lot of detergent in the way. They wouldn’t waste time going to the very bottom and it can muffle noises if shaken. You can take the blade out of a razor, cut a slit into the top or bottom of an unopened bag then slide things in and keep the slitted side out of view. If the bag looks unopened they don’t check it because it looks unopened. Don’t brag about where you hide things or let others see in case they’re a snitch. Your cellie is likely fine but better careful than not.If your cellie doesn’t want you there or you don’t want to share a cell with them ask a CO if you can move or you can throw out their stuff & mattress. If you throw out their stuff they can fight to stay in the cell if they win and will probably be pissed. If the person throwing them out loses then they get to stay. They can rematch and throw you out if they win. Inmates mostly like that drama and ironically big, intimidating people or those who talk a lot of shit might not even fight. Don't think that people won’t fight though even if they’re out on probation in a week. People do dumb shit all the time. It can get real petty with dumb rules that the inmates enforce or what they think makes you cool like high school or something but in prison things can get more dangerous. Don’t brag about getting out soon and know that talking about life outside might anger inmates. They don’t all want to think about how long they have stuck there especially if for life or if they just get upset thinking of the outside. It’s a different life in prison especially for those in for a while if not for life.Don’t get into others business that'll get you through all of it with little to no or at least less problems. Don’t agree to things you don’t understand. If they need you to hold onto or smuggle something but won’t tell you what, it’s probably drugs so don’t. Hold your head high, have good posture. Buy hygiene before commissary or people can talk shit. Best for them to have no reason to. Don't bet unless money is on the table or better yet just don't bet because it’s illegal even if a certain CO is out that doesn’t care. Common sense really here.Tell people sending mail to not include a return address or inmates may try to extort money from them threatening to hurt you if they don’t or that you’re in danger but they’ll protect you if they send enough. They may do this too if they figure out what phone numbers you call. Whether they actually would or not a lot of people will pay out of fear. Don't let people know how much $ you have, 20 usd is a lot in prison. Don't join a gang but be friendly with them. If a shotcaller of a gang demands do something do it or move to another prison if it might get deadly because “you fear for your life”. If they segregate by race then stick to your race or it would upset some. Follow the prison rules but the inmates rules & culture too. If they contradict try for both or get out of that situation up to another prison or protective custody if necessary.
