Admissions Officers will typically have a “school profile” for every high school that they receive applications from. As the example shows below, a high school profile provides information about your school district, graduation requirements, the grading system, curriculum, athletics, extracurricular activities, available courses, and more.Your high school’s profile provides extremely important context to your application. If your school did not provide AP classes, this will be listed on the profile. This will then explain to Admissions Officers why you did not take as many high level or competitive classes as other applicants. Similarly, if you don’t have many extracurriculars on your application because your school did not provide many, the profile will show this. Essentially, your high school’s profile and the information it provides Admissions Officers allows applicants to be compared on more even ground. After all, it would be unfair for an Admissions Officer to penalize an applicant for not dual-enrolling in college courses or not taking as many high-level science classes if their school did not provide those opportunities or did not have as many resources.If an Admissions Office does not have the profile for your school, or if they have questions about you or your application, they will contact your high school counselor. This is why it’s extremely important to build a good relationship with your counselor early in high school! For example, if you’re an “International” player in the Canadian Football League, you may not qualify for permanent resident status, but you can easily qualify for a work visa in a “talent” category. Although many CFL greats eventually became citizens, it generally takes a long time. Mike Clemons, the most beloved foreign-born athlete in Toronto, first came here in the late 1980s and didn’t get citizenship for over 25 years.Hockey is one of the very few sports in the United States were well over half the players are not U.S. nationals. In addition, you can’t get immigration status automatically just because you’re signed to a U.S. based team. You have to apply and wait your turn. On the other hand, getting a visa is relatively easy.Turn it around for a second - Austen Matthews is a stand-out for the Toronto Maple Leafs, but he’s a U.S. citizen, born and bred in California. One of our previous stand-outs, Mats Sundin, was a Swedish citizen.And it can be a lot of hassle. Let’s say a Canadian citizen signs with the L.A. Kings and decides to apply for immigrant status. When his interview comes up, can he schedule it in Los Angeles? He cannot. He must return to a U.S. consulate in Canada to be interviewed. That’s probably only possible in the off season.Frankly, most Americans don’t have a good understanding on how the U.S. immigration process works. Just because someone is a fine upstanding resident doens’t mean they have the right to stay in the country. Let’s say our Canadian player for the Kings is all set to get “legal” when, all of a sudden, he’s traded to the Jets. Now, even if he gets immigration status, he can’t use it unless he resides in L.A. and commutes to Winnipeg for games. Three years later, he’s traded to Tampa Bay, but by that time his application has lapsed and he has to start over.Or you could always be like “The Great One” and marry an American. That’s the best path to citizenship for Canadian athletes, no matter how good they are.

Absolutely. Some of my most effective medical applicants have been homeschooled. One, whose education was supervised by his father (a professor at MIT before he moved to Oxford), was editing research journals during his teen years and accomplished so much in late high school and college that he was touring as a motivational speaker by age 20. My own kids are homeschooled, and I’m 100% sure that any of them who wants to become a doctor can get there.Admittedly, homeschooled doctors are the exception, not the rule. The overwhelming majority of my pre-med students—probably 99%—come through school education, propelled to college success by AP and IB classes, Clinical Rotations classes, and dual credit classes. Many are on athletic scholarships or SAT-based academic scholarships that they might not have accessed without opportunities their high school provided.
