He had failed at many businesses before; why would this one be successful?Well, Sanders did something smart. He also converted a studio, next to the gas station, into a restaurant that he would use in his spare time to sell fried chicken.But not any fried chicken. Oh no, this was Sanders’ special recipe.The fried chicken turned out to be more successful than the gas station. Customers loved it. If he could just expand the business into the fried chicken market, he knew it would be a success.Except, a highway was built over Sanders’ restaurant and he was forced to close it down.At the age of 65, Colonel Sanders still tried to be successful. He understood that if he gave his recipe to others, they could produce the same results. Therefore, he took his special fried chicken to restaurants to see if they would accept his chicken.He got rejectedNot once, not twice, but 1,009 timesThey said they “didn’t like the taste”Eventually, a restaurant agreed to sell Sanders’ chicken and Kentucky Fried Chicken was born.The franchise model allowed Sanders to produce his exact recipe in any KFC in the world. It was a proven strategy for success. All somebody needed to do was become a franchisee and they would see the profit flow in.This led to quick expansion and a reliant product.That’s the reason why most franchise business models succeeding.If you are interested, I will leave a few KFC hacks and money-saving tips. I'm going to run you through the evolution of two business models. Food is a good business because you need it every day. Its a bad business because its competitive. Unless you can do it better.McDonalds is awesome. Consistent quality food all around the world for a few dollars. Meat and bread is a consummate traveler. The stores themselves can run on a franchise model, which makes McDonald's revenues less cyclical.However it has separate employees at the counter and making the food. With the all day breakfast, they are going to have to run separate stations for meat and dairy.I don't know who did it first, but Subway and their sandwiches sticks in my mind for the food being turned into a production line. Menu above, ingredients below, made to order. Much reduced cooking times, reducing labor cost whilst increasing choice. Quicker to serve leading to happier customers and more capacity.Chipotle, who make burritos, are on the best type of fast food business model yet. Its got LESS inputs than Subway. Pick one of five carbohydrates (burrito, rice, taco), pick one of five meats, and then top it off with your sides and condiments.Less ingredients means less inventory and less cost. Everything already cooked so they don't even have to waste time melting your cheese.The stores are 100% modern in style, which happens to be the cheapest to fit out and the cheapest to clean!And the killer with Chipotle is they managed to flip the pricing discussion on its head. Instead of competing on price, they came out and said 'if we find a better beef, or a better bean, we're gonna use that and raise the price'.Check out one of the old razor's my dad might use.​Image: Cat BranchmanCommodity bit of metal, screwed onto a stick. Both the stick and the metal comes cheap and low margin.Bic makes disposables with less metal and a plastic handle. They made them cheaper. Shaving is a pain, so cheaper is better right? Not necessarily.Gillette invests a billion dollars on a better head. And I'm not joking on this, it got to a billion dollars by the time it went triple bladed. They decide to subsidize the sale of the handle and price up the new fangled heads, thereby inventing the "razor and razor blades" model. Genius, lock you in with the cheap handle and sell you a head to go on it every couple of months.Its not a mistake where they sell you the heads in packs of 8 or 16. This is them getting you to hold the inventory. Less inventory for them means less capital stuck doing nothing for them.And now we get to Dollar Shave Club or King of Shaves. A monthly subscription for your razors, handles, and shaving products.They're selling you more, they're doing it more regularly, and they're making your life easier.The evolution of a business mode is all about "sell more faster". The key concept for you is that you won’t find an existing business plan you can adopt. Templates are like the above, or outlines, or frameworks, that help you organize what you plan to do into conventional order.There is no way you can find a business plan already written that will be of any use to you unless you want to look at buying into a franchise business. Otherwise, templates will tell you what kind of information to include and how to order and structure it, but not the content.Business plans are made, as in developed; not found. Finding a business plan to use for a new business makes as much sense as paying somebody to do your exercise or your diet. Every business is unique.
