Reading the answers here, one can separate the true strategists and grognards from the military fanboys. Those who think a helicopter, AK-47, or Predator would make a large dent on the outcome or length of the war are sorely mistaken. The German army fielded thousands of rifles similar in function and design to the AK-47, not to mention the millions of submachine guns distributed throughout the war, and they had a negligible impact. The victorious powers ended the conflict largely with bolt action rifles (I'm looking at the Brits and Soviets here...only the US had almost universal issue of an autoloader rifle). The helicopter could certainly come in handy in a number of scenarios, but helicopters are quite vulnerable to concentrated anti-aircraft fire. Quad mount 20mm and 37mm cannons fired by experienced, well trained teams used to dealing with ground attack aircraft much harder to hit than your average attack helicopter (P-47s, Il-2s, and Hawker Typhoons) would provide a serious threat to low flying helicopters. MQ-1 Predators or MQ-9 Reapers would provide valuable intelligence and limited strike capability, but would be very vulnerable to any propeller driven fighter or interceptor of the day.The real game-changers are the logistics capabilities of modern airlifters, modern computer systems supporting advanced cryptography, communications, and radar technology, modern reconnaissance systems (anything like a U-2 or SR-71 would be untouchable), or widespread use of precision guided munitions .
