I’m going to assume your mostly concerned about noxious weeds, (I.E. weeds that have a harmful or unpleasant effect on you), getting those controlled but not trying to emulate a professional sports field. Then your going to have to take some limited basic steps to deal with said weeds.Fourth, I’m going to assume you have a good stand of grass to start with. If the turf is bare spotted, thin, or otherwise sick then there are holes in your lawn. Nature will fill these bare and thin spots if it can as quickly as possible (ie weeds). If you overall lawn is in general poor heath then you will need to add new seed via some form of overseeing or completely renovating areas. If you don’t have a sustainable base of grass plants in the lawn the weed control will simply suppress the issue for a time.With my years of experience let me just say this, yes you can improve your lawn without pesticides. However if you want to go that route ask yourself a couple of quick questions:Are you an avid gardener (have experience working with plants so that you might be able to spot issues to correct)?Do you invest a reasonable amount of time working in your landscape yourself, or do you just want to look nice at a glance when your spending time enjoying it?Are you willing to let several months up to a year or two pass while you wait for natural processes to work on the turf correcting itself?Are you willing to regularly monitor your lawn and landscape for changes and invest the effort to maintain a good growing environment that will be required or pay someone to put those hours in?If the answers are no to these questions than the quickest and most cost effective way to improve your lawn is through pesticides.A well planned and executed fertilization and pesticide program could rapidly improve your lawn in the short run to make it more pleasant for you and your child to enjoy. It will not be a fix all solution, while it will help, most lawn issues are generally linked to longer term environmental issues such as poor mowing, poor soil quality and an aging or poor quality turf grass stand.An example I use is for customers, just as eating right and exercising can keep you healthy it won’t cure cancer.How much you try to solve these issues will depend on what you want out of you lawn. I will warn you the more you want to look like a baseball field the more it will take in work, and cost to attain.Now I’m well aware of the issues associated with using pesticides. Many people can get real touchy about the use of pesticides but honestly at the end of the day they are just a tool, most of the horror stories are about someone using that tool poorly. As someone who actually applies pesticides of a living I can say I've heard or seen quite a number of horror stories or claims, probably more than you can imagine.In your case I’m thinking a year of whatever company you go with uses as their full application program would be sufficient to remove most of the more offensive weeds and improve the lawn’s overall health to a state that would probably be acceptable. Your turf will stronger but it wouldn’t be that deep green all year round that people have come to associate with a “good lawn”As a side, grass changes color through the year as it goes through different seasons, that dark green coloration lasting all year is generally more vigorous growth due to boosted nitrogen available from fertilizer applications, and wetter weather. While it looks nice (i like it myself) it is not necessary to maintain good health of the lawn.I will say that if small children are regularly playing on the lawn you may want to consider dialing back on usage after initial control is established.Over the years I have had a number of customers who dial their program back to two or maybe three applications in the entire year mostly to get the lawn growing vigorously during the spring and control the worst of the weeds during the fall. I’ve dealt with uncorrected poor grass stands before and even with full blanket applications of herbicide it’s only kept weeds away for a few weeks or months at most if there isn’t grass in place to fill the gaps left by the weeds.Long term it is important to maintain good cultural practices.The biggest issue I encounter year after year is poor mowing. I would say well over 80% of my new customers mow their lawn far too short. The height most people mow their lawn is good for early spring and late fall. As growing season warms up in the spring you are supposed to lengthen the height of the cut, and then start shortening as the fall starts to cool down.During the hotter months of the year a proper mowing height is 3.5–4 inches (8.8–10cm). Grass grows roots in almost a mirror image to its leaf surface, so the taller you let your grass grow the deeper it will sink its roots. A taller grass has more access to water and soil nutrients that allow it to grow stronger and with better vigor.Vigorous turf with more strength can often out compete or outright smother weeds on its own. Most lawn programs (even the organic) ones rely on this fact of biology to help maintain weed control.
